[The Folk Art of Quilting.] Collection contains typescripts, photographs and an interview with Ida Lee Crase concerning her quilting. In addition to the photographs, cassette tape and typescripts, the collection also contains an example of Mrs. Crase’s hand stitched quilt piece. Project was completed for a folk studies class at Western Kentucky University.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 382. Correspondence, account books, receipts, sermons, drawings, and diaries of the Venable family of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, chiefly John Wesley Venable, Sr. and his wife Fannie and son John, Jr. Of particular interest is an 1839-1839 travel journal kept by John, Sr. while in Florida. Also includes John, Sr.’s sermons and sermon preparation material as well as thirty-nine small diaries documenting his career as an Episcopal priest in Versailles and Hopkinsville. Includes one of John, Sr.’s art sketch books.

Art has social relevance and is effective as a means of activism. Current social and environmental crises make art-based activism especially relevant today. There are problems with prevailing views on art, which prevent many artists from seeing themselves as agents of change. Therefore, some established views on art need to shift in order for artists to become more empowered. Ways of utilizing art for activism are many and varied. Activism is often approached with attitudes that are problematic and ineffective. An art-based approach is a positive alternative because it stimulates empathy. Empathy is necessary to achieve social and environmental justice. …
