Sojourn, John A. Heidersbach Jan 2001

Sojourn, John A. Heidersbach

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

My visual thesis, titled "Sojourn," is made up of 12 paintings, plus four preparatory drawings and color studies. Collectively, these works are an ongoing narrative commentary on vagaries of the human condition as I have observed them during the past 35 or so years of my adult life. While each of the paintings can be viewed separately, they were intended from the start to be shown together, as I believe the similarities in their subject matter and overall composition have a synergistic effect when viewed as a group. All of the paintings were done in acrylic paints on stretched canvas. …

Inner Presence, Amy L. Bailey Jan 2000

Inner Presence, Amy L. Bailey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

What we believe constructs the person we are and will become, the ways and means we conduct our lives and form our sense of right and wrong at all levels inward and outward: politically, socially, and personally. My own beliefs, founded on my faith in God, have directed me in my work. This thesis exhibition is an exploration of how to express these beliefs visually. During my exploration, I had to alter and develop my own visual iconography to express my ideas of God. Conventional transcendent icons including the cross, the 1 Christ figure, and the Virgin Mary, have been …

The Role Of Artists In Ship Camouflage During World War I, Roy R. Behrens Jan 1999

The Role Of Artists In Ship Camouflage During World War I, Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Work

Experiments in ship camouflage during World War I were necessitated by the inordinate success of German submarines (called "U-boats") in destroying Allied ships. Because it is impossible to make a ship invisible at sea, Norman Wilkinson, Everett L. Warner and other artists devised methods of course distortion in which high-contrast, unrelated shapes were painted on a ship's surface, thereby confusing the periscope view of the submarine gunner.

Idols Are For Suckers: An Exhibition Of Prints, Brett Anthony Fisher Jan 1999

Idols Are For Suckers: An Exhibition Of Prints, Brett Anthony Fisher

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this show I have included some of the prints that I have made during my time as a graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa. I believe that these prints show development and transition in style and sensibility. As I have worked, I have tried to continually develop my art. With every print there is an attempt to go beyond the barriers of the previous one. Working intuitively, I try not to have any preconceived notions of what the final piece is going to look like. Every step in the process is valuable; I don't always necessarily know …

The Ob-Literation Of Art, Walter Sun Chien Jan 1999

The Ob-Literation Of Art, Walter Sun Chien

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

I read a story, a true story in fact, with real people and real events, an account really, about a piece of cloth. This piece of fabric, brocade actually, had been cut from an old sofa, a couch; stained "shit-brown" from dried blood so went the account. In truth, it was Adolph Hitler's blood on that piece of cloth cut from the couch which he sat on in his bunker beneath burning Berlin before and after he blew his brains out and bled on the brocade.

Art, Design And Gestalt Theory, Roy R. Behrens Jan 1998

Art, Design And Gestalt Theory, Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Work

Gestalt psychology was founded in 1910 by three German psychologists, Max Wertheimer, Kurt Koffka and Wolfgang Kohler. The author discusses gestalt theory's influence on modern art and design, describes its resemblance to Japanese-inspired theories of aesthetics and finds evidence of a mutual, if limited, interest between the gestalt psychologists and certain artists.

Rudolf Amheim: The Little Owl On The Shoulder Of Athene, Roy R. Behrens Jan 1998

Rudolf Amheim: The Little Owl On The Shoulder Of Athene, Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Work

The author discusses the life of Rudolf Arnheim (b. 1904), the celebrated art-theorist and psychologist, professor emeritus of the psychology of art at Harvard University and author of 15 books about perceptual psychology in relation to art, architecture and film, among them Film as Art, Art and Visual Perception, Visual Thinking and The Power of the Center. The article is a biographical overview of Arnheim's life and work, including his association with the gestalt psychologists in Berlin in the 1920s, his pioneering work as a film critic, his flight from Nazi Germany and his subsequent immigration to the United States …

The Artistic And Scientific Collaboration Of Blanche Ames Ames And Adelbert Ames Ii, Roy R. Behrens Jan 1998

The Artistic And Scientific Collaboration Of Blanche Ames Ames And Adelbert Ames Ii, Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Work

During an uninterrupted period from about 1910 through 1913, Blanche Ames Ames (1878-1969), an American artist and women's suffragist, worked closely with her brother, Adelbert Ames 11 (1880-1955), a lawyer, artist and optical physiologist, in a study of color, perspective and other aspects of pictorial art in the hope of using scientific findings to enhance the realism of their paintings. They made significant progress, but their close relationship ended in 1922 as a result of a disagreement about their joint authorship of a published paper.

Typographic Communication, Soo-Kyung Chun Jan 1998

Typographic Communication, Soo-Kyung Chun

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The main influence on my graduate work has been the art of my native country of South Korea. A predominant feature of oriental paintings is black ink. I have always been intrigued by the balance of black and white elements which I associate with figure- and- ground in Western design theory. This intrigue has continued as my education has broadened into the field of graphic design. The opportunity to combine artistic intuition with technical computer- based media prompted me to study graphic design at the University of Northern Iowa beginning in 1996. It was my ambition to study a diversity …

A Phenomenological Analysis Of An Instructional Systems Design Creative Project, Daniel M. Benson Jan 1998

A Phenomenological Analysis Of An Instructional Systems Design Creative Project, Daniel M. Benson

Graduate Research Papers

This research paper is a phenomenological analysis of a creative project involving University of Northern Iowa undergraduate art students in the planning and creation of visual illustrations, graphic design concepts, .html documents, and imagery for a world wide web intranet/lnternet virtual space.

This analysis looks at instructional design as a creative process and the phenomenology of the UNI Art/Cat (Art Resources Technology/Computer Assisted Training) computer laboratory. The mission, goals, and objectives of the creative project, experiential and experimental philosophies of education, and the phenomenologies of the instructional design process are the main considerations. The methodology of this thesis is primarily …

The Intimate Landscape, Margery J. Hibbard Jan 1998

The Intimate Landscape, Margery J. Hibbard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The emphasis for my master of arts painting thesis has been the landscape. I chose to explore the subject of intimate settings within the landscape as I wanted the observer to feel as if he or she was within the closely-viewed scene. My focus was the challenge of capturing the effects of filtered light, silhouetted trees, abstract shapes and reflections in intimate settings. The landscape has always held great meaning for me; I respond to its ever-changing colors and patterns. When I am alone in an inner woods, the intimate landscape setting, I feel immersed in and a part of …

Lithographers' Opinions About Waterless Lithography, Devang Pranlal Mehta Jan 1997

Lithographers' Opinions About Waterless Lithography, Devang Pranlal Mehta

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purposes of this study were to identify the advantages and disadvantages of waterless litho in comparison with traditional litho, to solve the controversial issues, to forecast the growth of waterless litho, and to inform graphic arts professionals about it. The problem of this research was to identify and measure perceived controversial issues for using the waterless litho process. These controversial issues were related to the return on investment and operating costs involved, productivity, quality of images, eco-friendliness, and technical problems associated with waterless litho.

Due to the fact that waterless litho was a developing technology and some controversial issues …

Metaphors Of Memory, Mary Alice Applegate Jan 1996

Metaphors Of Memory, Mary Alice Applegate

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Metaphors of Memory is an installation of objects created during my studies in the Master of Arts program at the University of Northern Iowa from August 1995 to December 1996. The work was exhibited at Kamerick Art Gallery at the University of Northern Iowa on December 13-20, 1996. The installation summarizes and objectifies my observations and reflections on sociocultural phenomena arising from memory loss due to Alzheimer's Disease. My recent familial contact with Alzheimer's Disease led me to choose this as a subject for exploration in my art. My work comes from an instrumentalist or pragmatic perspective. Like artist and …

Maria Lactans And Some Visual Predecessors In Egypt, The Ancient Near East And Greece, M. C. Ewald Jan 1995

Maria Lactans And Some Visual Predecessors In Egypt, The Ancient Near East And Greece, M. C. Ewald

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Several semesters ago I participated in a class on the art and archaeology of ancient Egypt. As an art history course it, focused on the images now available from that magnificent civilization. These images conveyed not only the incredible pomp and splendor afforded state religion and ceremony, but also whispered of the sweet joy abundant in private life as well. Flipping through my textbook early on in the semester, my attention was captured by an extraordinary example encompassing both "types" of images. The subject of my fascinated gaze was a statue of a child-pharaoh, Pepy II, seated on his mother's …

Pattern Design: Painting Inner Rhythms, Audrey Ellen Farrell Jan 1995

Pattern Design: Painting Inner Rhythms, Audrey Ellen Farrell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"The term 'pattern' necessarily implies a design composed of one or more devices, multiplied and arranged in orderly sequence. A single device, however complicated or complete in itself it may be, is not a pattern, but a unit with which the designer, working according to some definite plan of action, may compose a pattern." Archibald H. Christie My investigation of pattern design has taken the form of a series of highly embellished paintings, applied to either two- or three-dimensional surfaces or a combination of both. Among the recurrent concerns in my work are the history of patterning, its use in …

A Measure Between The Beginnings, Amy Elizabeth Fichter Jan 1995

A Measure Between The Beginnings, Amy Elizabeth Fichter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis exhibition is a culmination, a gathering, of my beginnings as an artist as well as the evidence of the chaos of creative growth. It is an attempt to show the fullness and depth that I have experienced in the making of these works. I use Audre Lorde's words as a title for this exhibition because art-making is work that I love with my strongest feelings; the show is evidence of my confusion and struggling with what I have found most powerful and satisfying to create. It is a measuring and a showing of the work from this past …

In Search Of Beauty, Tatiana Anatolievna Izugrafova Jan 1995

In Search Of Beauty, Tatiana Anatolievna Izugrafova

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

When I began to paint I was one of many who intuitively or by some practical reasons had chosen art as an area in which to work and to make a living. At that time I imagined art as something extra-ordinary, beautiful, always interesting and exciting--as some sort of holiday or celebration. The fine arts and, particularly, painting, are areas that make this celebration everlasting. Just thinking about the works of Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo and the drawings from the Lascaux caves would make every beginner in Art thrilled to be in touch with the creation of eternal beauty. As my …

Camera Images: Preserving, Editing, And Mitigating The Past, Larry Beck Jan 1994

Camera Images: Preserving, Editing, And Mitigating The Past, Larry Beck

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

'This thesis is a multiple unit photographic installation. The images presented are translighted display transparencies and projected transparencies. All of the images are photographs of video images (video stills). The video images and the resulting stills depict the destruction of a series of photographic images and art objects; therefore, all of the images refer to past works of art and are pictures of pictures. It is my intent in this thesis to examine and comment on our perception of camera images, the great credibility we give them, and the comfortable deception they provide. The images demonstrate that camera images offer …

An Investigation Of Metaphorical Statements Of Preadolescents And Artists Who Journal, Ellen Barth Jan 1993

An Investigation Of Metaphorical Statements Of Preadolescents And Artists Who Journal, Ellen Barth

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of literal and visual journaling on students' thoughts about artistic production. Participants were 40 sixth grade students enrolled in a private school program in the Midwest and two selected professional artists who used literal journaling to develop visual imagery. The theoretical frame drew upon Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences (Gardner, 1983). The methodology relied on Borg and Gall's ( 1983) discussion of qualitative research design, Bradburn and Sudman's qualitative research methodology (1982), and Oppenheim's (1966) questionnaire design. The analysis of the data followed Kogan, Connor, Gross, and Fava's (1980) method …

The primary intention of my studio thesis, as a graduate student in graphic design in the UNI Department of Art, is an intensive study of the design of publications. This study involves the use of computers, computer software, and related technology in my approach to researching, planning, and executing each project presented in my studio thesis . My first experience in publication design was while completing my studies toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I became directly responsible for the entire design and production of Theatre Topics, a new academic journal housed and edited at UNI and published twice …

Falling In Love, Lisa Diane Houha Jan 1992

Falling In Love, Lisa Diane Houha

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The series of paintings and drawings I have completed for my thesis exhibition, "Falling in Love," is the visual culmination of my personal approach to the creation of art: allowing a work to develop without the imposition of formal concerns. It is an autobiographical series, a visual journal, and approached with the belief that art comes from life and that my art comes specifically from my life. The subject and title of my research has to do with understanding feelings for myself, others, and my art through the process of making art. It is my observation that love is the …

Graphic Design: Eastern And Western Design Elements In Visual Communication, Li-Ying Bao Jan 1992

Graphic Design: Eastern And Western Design Elements In Visual Communication, Li-Ying Bao

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

To pursue the combination of Eastern and Western aesthetics in visual communication, I came to study in the United States from China. As a graphic designer, the juxtaposition of my Chinese and American education and working experiences enable me to perceive and approach design works cross-culturally. My thesis is the continuous exploration of the affinity between Eastern and Western design elements in visual communication. In my design works, my intention is to combine the traditional Eastern design methodology, modern Western technology, and contemporary design theories to such an extent that these design elements could enrich each other and produce unique …

Packaging And Publication Design, Jennifer Eleanor Helm Jan 1991

Packaging And Publication Design, Jennifer Eleanor Helm

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The focus of my studio/thesis work has been to produce actual publications and a package design through the use of the computer. I strove to fulfill the desires of my clients while maintaining a high level of design. To organize the discussion of my work of the past year, I have grouped slides into five categories: work done for the Gallery of Art at the University of Northern Iowa, a computer illustration, Cedar Falls/Waterloo events, UNI events, and work done for FroKrunch (a small business which began in Cedar Falls, Iowa). From August 1990 to May 1991. I designed all …

Still Life Drawings And Paintings: A Development In Spatial Ambiguities, Daniel Tomas Hall Jan 1991

Still Life Drawings And Paintings: A Development In Spatial Ambiguities, Daniel Tomas Hall

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis is a development of my drawings and paintings during a 3-year period, from 1988 to 1991. I have sought a consistency in representing forms in an ambiguous space. Painting in a realistic mode has, for me, enhanced the sense of ambiguity. I have sought to discover different ways of presenting the union of objects and forms in a space that is both naturalistic and flat. Before I begin to discuss the road traveled in the development of my paintings, it is important to mention the role of the still life. The still life is a rich source of …
