The Life And Unusual Ideas Of Adelbert Ames, Jr., Roy R. Behrens
The Life And Unusual Ideas Of Adelbert Ames, Jr., Roy R. Behrens
Faculty Work
This paper is a summary of the life and major achievements of Adelbert Ames, Jr., an American ophthalmologist and perceptual psychologist, who had initially wanted to be a visual artist. He is most widely remembered today as the inventor of the Ames Demonstrations in Perception, the most famous of which consists of a distorted room in which people seem to shrink as they walk from one corner to another. This essay discusses the relationship of the Ames Demonstrations to anamorphic visual art, and it documents various comments by perceptual psychologists and artists who were directly acquainted with Ames.
A Series Of Twelve Silverprints: Silence And Violence, Dennis Hundley
A Series Of Twelve Silverprints: Silence And Violence, Dennis Hundley
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
SILENCE AND VIOLENCE began as a series of black and white photographs that attempts to depict strong feelings and emotions through the use of lighting, gesture and expression. This is accomplished in three stages: (1) Making the negatives; (2) Making the print; (3) Finishing the print using various processes (bleaching, toning, etc.). My approach combines the use of photographic materials and spontaneous decision making in all three steps to produce prints that are unique. The image making process begins with the production of the negatives. For this series, I wanted a rather spontaneous approach, closer to the working methods I …

Inner Geometry, Susan Jane Wadle
Inner Geometry, Susan Jane Wadle
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The body of my work indirectly offers parallels to the most ancient usage of the word "geometry" known, that of the "earth-measurement" practices of the Egyptians and Babylonians. Such practices were in response to the needs of everyday living. Although the later introduction of deductive geometry by the Greeks evolved into more complex and intellectual formulas, I felt a richer vein could be tapped by exploring geometry's earliest province: "earth-measurement."
The earth has infinitely warmer, more emotional connotations to me than do the colder geometric formulations that rise in the intellectual air above the ground. Consequently, geometry's earliest definition of …

Abstract Paintings: A Presentation Of Visual Essence, Kimble A. Bromley
Abstract Paintings: A Presentation Of Visual Essence, Kimble A. Bromley
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
My thesis has consisted of searching out the visual essence of the representational world and presenting it in abstract paintings. When I began my thesis, I had been painting in a representational mode and found that I was drawn to certain components of interior and exterior environments that excited me: geometrical structure, space, color, light, and mood. My work became more abstract because I made a decision to leave out extraneous detail and focused in on these important visual elements. I felt that painting this way freed me to concentrate on and communicate to the viewer, what was most important …
