Art of the Scholar-Poets: Traditional Chinese Painting and Calligraphy

April 01 to May 09, 1998

Marsh Art Gallery, University of Richmond Museums

Introduction

Chinese culture developed one of the world's most enduring artistic traditions, literati painting, based upon a unique idea about the purposes of art. The art of the scholar-poets is centered in calligraphy and poetry, which the literati learned at an early age as part of their basic education. Painting was done with the same tools as poetry and calligraphy - brush, ink, and paper - and it was an easy step to express poetic sensibilities in visual …

The Ideal Catalogue House: Mail-Order Architecture And Consumer Culture, 1914–1930, Evie T. Joselow

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation explores the mail-order house and its relation to aspects of consumer culture, establishing a context for understanding its popular appeal and its notable presence in the competitive housing market between 1918 and 1930. Fueled by a demand for housing, and widely promoted during a period of economic prosperity which ushered in an interest in consumerism associated with home ownership, the mail-order house, assembled from pre-cut lumber and sold by mail-order suppliers, represented an affordable and appealing means for consumers to acquire the aesthetic and material elements associated with the ideal house and home.

The dissertation articulates the popular …

Combining The Historical And The Personal In Painting, Christopher A. Shotola-Hardt May 1997

Combining The Historical And The Personal In Painting, Christopher A. Shotola-Hardt

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis project consists of five large scale, abstract paintings executed on Masonite panels. A major component of these paintings is the heavily built-up surface texture. In order to achieve this heavy, sculptural surface, plaster and acrylic media have been applied in an aggressive, spontaneous manner using variously-sized masonry knives. The paintings are largely action-oriented. They are non-neutral, and they bespeak a great deal of intensity on the part of the artist.

The five paintings contain emotional content based upon personal experiences and family history. In some cases, I began a painting with the subject matter clearly in mind. In …

Paul Ninas: Dean Of New Orleans Artists, Doug Waterfield

Publications: Art & Design

This thesis is an attempt to study in detail the career and life of one of the South's many overlooked painters, the New Orleans-based artist and teacher Paul Ninas (1903-1964). Ninas, known as "The Dean of New Orleans Artists" was intimately associated with the art scene in New Orleans and was influential in its formation and development through both his academic and aesthetic contributions. There are four basic catagories, shaped largely by subject matter and environment, in which the majority of Ninas' work can be classified: the Petris and West Indies paintings and drawings, scenes of New Orleans, mural commissions, …

Assessment Of Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents Using The Rorschach: An Analysis Of The Ea/Es Relationship, Jordan L. Mulder

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a long history of debate regarding the validity of the Rorschach Inkblot test. Much of the previous research has involved adult subjects within clinical settings. This study investigates the validity of the Rorschach with adolescents classified as being emotionally disturbed according to the educational definition. School personnel and, particularly, school psychologists have the difficult task of identifying individuals who are emotionally disturbed (ED). It appears that a valid measure of covert processes may be helpful in making these determinations. Due to the vast number of scores and codes generated from the Rorschach using Exner's (1978) Comprehensive Scoring System, …
