Transformative Power Of Stitchery: Sashiko From Cold Regions Of Japan And Embroidery Work Of The Nui Project, Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada
Transformative Power Of Stitchery: Sashiko From Cold Regions Of Japan And Embroidery Work Of The Nui Project, Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
This paper seeks to reveal the transformative power of stitchery by examining textile practices in Japan and articulating how a threaded needle can be viewed as the co-agent of stitchers, infusing their materials with properties in a “processual” and relational manner that reflects the currents of their lifeworld.[1] I will contrast and compare two practices, one ancient and one modern, one responding to life’s necessities and the other simply to the act of stitching. In the ancient world, stitchery was essential for human survival, and later in rural Japan, sashiko stitchery was a medium that connected textiles with daily …

Where Can Objects Take You? The Case Of The World War Ii Japanese Airman's Suit, Madelyn Shaw, Trish Fitzsimons
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
“Dad always said that ‘It’s made out of Australian wool,’ and I thought that was just a joke because you couldn’t see how the Japanese would get hold of Australian wool during the war…. But it is a fine material…. They weren’t scrapping for something to wear.” —Wally Lanagan
In December 1942, the Yokosuka Military Department manufactured, surely among hundreds of others, a flying suit, which may or may not have ever been worn by a Japanese pilot. It did, however, end up on display at the Pioneer Park Museum in Dalby, a small town in rural Queensland, Australia. It …
Textile Memory In Colchane: Weavers Revitalizing The Aymara Tradition, Soledad Hoces De La Guardia
Textile Memory In Colchane: Weavers Revitalizing The Aymara Tradition, Soledad Hoces De La Guardia
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
In Aymara culture, textiles have played a fundamental role as highly valued community possessions and significant media for ritual and tradition. In Chilean territory, the Colchane community has been fortunate, because they have here retained, with fidelity and vigor, their culture and traditional textile practices. However, the average age of active weavers is rising and those younger do not have the technical expertise of their elders, which has led to the loss of a significant part of traditional technical knowledge.
To not forget the “handwork” became an urgent concern for artisans in the community, members of the Aymar Warmi association, …
Viscacha: Luxury, Fate And Identification In Precolumbian Textiles, Elena Phipps, Caroline Solazzo
Viscacha: Luxury, Fate And Identification In Precolumbian Textiles, Elena Phipps, Caroline Solazzo
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Since the sixteenth century, references by Spanish chroniclers to the use of chinchilla hair (Andean rodents of several species including viscacha) by Andean weavers indicate that the fine hair of these animals had been incorporated into textiles. Their fine soft hair, often mottled in color, has distinctive characteristics which vary and, as a result, make them difficult to identify. Some archaeological finds, primarily in Chile have reported viscacha skins and fur bags, but few if any reports have identified the presence of textiles or spun yarns that incorporate this special fiber. The depiction of the animal takes on special meaning …
Unseen, Unheard, Unnamed: The Matchless And Unsung Heroes Of The Textile Art And Craft Of Rajasthan, Simrita Singh, Anu H. Gupta
Unseen, Unheard, Unnamed: The Matchless And Unsung Heroes Of The Textile Art And Craft Of Rajasthan, Simrita Singh, Anu H. Gupta
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Rajasthan is known for its exquisite handicrafts, especially the textiles. In spite of having the most vibrant and glorious traditions, this sector has been grossly unorganized due to the poor socio-economic status of the artisans. The educational background of the artisans also is not satisfactory; hence, they lack public relations skills. They are totally dependent on big traders and middlemen for marketing purposes. Moreover, in this era of labels and designers, the artisans, however skilled or endowed they may be, have to work under some renowned brand or name to have a regular livelihood. However, not all artisans are lucky …
Artistic Philanthropy And Women’S Emancipation In Early Twentieth-Century Italy, In The Life And The Work Of Romeyne Robert And Carolina Amari, Ruggero Ranieri
Artistic Philanthropy And Women’S Emancipation In Early Twentieth-Century Italy, In The Life And The Work Of Romeyne Robert And Carolina Amari, Ruggero Ranieri
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Romeyne Robert, married as Ranieri di Sorbello, started an embroidery school in 1904 in Umbria, at the family’s country estate of Pischiello. Her goal was to teach young peasant women to emancipate themselves by learning the craft of embroidery. She was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in America and by contemporary programs developed in settlement houses along the East Coast. Their aim was to help the emancipation of immigrant women from Italy by fostering the recovery of artisan skills. At the Sorbello Embroidery School, Romeyne rediscovered the Renaissance technique originally called the punto Umbro, later renamed punto Sorbello. …
Tribal Textiles And The Mingei Circle In Japan: Muneyoshi Yanagi’S View On Carpet, Yumiko Kamada
Tribal Textiles And The Mingei Circle In Japan: Muneyoshi Yanagi’S View On Carpet, Yumiko Kamada
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Tribal carpets and textiles have been enthusiastically collected by connoisseurs and ordinary people in Europe and the United States for years. Along with a number of publications on tribal carpets and textiles, several recent exhibitions such as Portable Storage: Tribal Weavings from the Collection of William and Inger Ginsberg at the Metropolitan Museum of Art indicate a keen academic interest in the West. In contrast, tribal carpets and textiles did not gain the attention of the majority of Japanese. However, some Japanese, especially Yanagi Muneyoshi and his friends in the Mingei circle, notably Hamada Shoji, Serizawa Keisuke, and Tonomura Kichinosuke, …
Dredge The Foundry | For Dirt And Era, Woody Stauffer
Dredge The Foundry | For Dirt And Era, Woody Stauffer
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Billions of years are past us and billions of years await. Shaping earthen material into sculptural abstractions is my way to sense and convey the lethargic natural progression of the planet. Fossilization, rot, dirt, plant growth, animal existence, and rust are aesthetics I endow with new perspectives and form through mold making and casting. The dichotomy between the eons of time behind us and the endless possibility of a technological future has inspired the addition of a science fiction aesthetic. To rust these computerized constructed geometric forms demonstrates how futuristic ideals will also wither away. In many ways we are …
Ecological Art Exhibition As Transformative Pedagogy, Stacey Skold
Ecological Art Exhibition As Transformative Pedagogy, Stacey Skold
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Environmental degradation is considered one of the biggest issues facing humankind. The problem is deep and global with fast fashion playing a significant, yet underrealized role. Scholars have established that developing the sustainable behaviors necessary to mitigate the effects of environmental degradation is a complex process, that knowledge of environmental degradation alone is insufficient to develop sustainable behaviors, and that both attitudinal and behavioral transformations are necessary for global environmental action and stewardship. As a result, researchers have called for new approaches to environmental education to promote transformative learning.

Visual Feast, Makaili J. Taylor
Visual Feast, Makaili J. Taylor
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This body of work, Visual Feast, explores the infatuation we have with sweets. Throughout my thesis, I discuss how this universal shared experience contributes to the art world, explaining how our culture today has turned a simple requirement to survive into a source of entertainment. I use my work to show the absurdity of our desires to overindulge, and the ways we fetishize food. By creating a visual feast for the viewers, my goal is to challenge perceptions of what is acceptable and what is absurd.
Plausible Expositions With Possible Expeditions, Nikolaus D. James
Plausible Expositions With Possible Expeditions, Nikolaus D. James
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Influenced by video games and cinema, in this body of work, Plausible Expositions with Possible Expeditions, I use objects to create scenarios that suggest a narrative. The scenes are then photographed and displayed through cathode-ray tube televisions and viewers use their own knowledge and ideas about the objects to create that narrative. Each of these objects has is own data set, and the most common have a universal data set—information surrounding the object that is widely recognized, much like how a crowbar is commonly associated with crime. Similar to playing a video game, an algorithm is used when viewing my …

Memory Bread, Nisiqi
Memory Bread, Nisiqi
Art + Design Masters Theses
Memory Bread, constituting a daily performance ritual and the post-action objects, seeks to address the generational decline of mother language use in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, a post-colonized province of China. I chose to eat sliced white bread in the performance and later casted concrete sculptures as the extension of the action for both substances’ capitalistic nature. Being an invasive material that took over the traditional architectural lifestyle, the use of concrete mirrors the pervasive cultural and ethnic assimilation in China. Meanwhile, the materiality of concrete being a mixture of various substances also metaphors the mixed culture that Chinese-Mongolians …

This tool has been integrated as part of the selected students’ assignments and projects as a practice in the creative arts education. Many of them were taught to sketch, doodle and experiment in different drawing techniques. Nonetheless, many of them are facing the problem of lack of knowledge and understanding in the ideation process. The quantitative research design and procedures were employed in this study. A total of 35 visual diaries were selected, one each …
Piet Mondrian’S Neo-Plastic Compositions (1917-1944) And His Six Principles Of Neo-Plasticism: An Analysis Of His Aesthetic Ideas Based On A Study Of His Essays And Paintings, Ali Fallahzadeh
Student Works (2020-2029)
Amongst the modern artists of the beginning of the 20th century, Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) is considered a pioneer of pure abstract painting. The result of his consistent intuitive experimentations on canvas during the 1910’s was the proposal of his new artistic style in 1919 called Neo-Plasticism, nieuwe beelding in Dutch. Throughout his Neo-Plastic period (1919-1944), he aimed to depict a universal expression of ‘equilibrium’ (new term for harmony) and a vital rhythm among his universal elements of painting called plastic means or means of imaging. Besides being a pure abstract painter, Mondrian was also a prolific writer of …

Zulkifli Yusoff’S “Don’T Play During Maghrib” Installation Art: A Visual Interpretation Based On Social Interactionism, Zolkiflee Nursyakirin
Student Works (2020-2029)
Zulkifli is a world class artist who can create social criticism art based on culture, education and economical stagnancy. “Don’t Play During Maghrib, Dialogue Series 2” (DPDM) is an exceptional artwork which represented him at the Venice Biennale in 1997. There is no written research about this artwork and also there are very limited references and materials on Malaysian installation art. This led the researcher to embark on this topic as a dissertation. Since, this research focuses on the installation artwork, it is appropriate to explore and study Zulkifli Yusoff’s artwork. It is qualitative research which aims at exploring the …
Nalini Malani's Medea Project: Gender And Nationhood In Postcolonial India, Maya Varma
Nalini Malani's Medea Project: Gender And Nationhood In Postcolonial India, Maya Varma
Art and Art History Honors Projects
In 1996, renowned contemporary Indian artist Nalini Malani embarked on what would become a decades-long project exploring the Greek myth of Medea as an embodiment of postcolonialism. Considering Medea’s historical interpretations as a mistreated wife and a villainous mother, this thesis examines how Malani transforms Medea into a metaphor of resistance to British colonialism and anticolonial nationalism in post-Partition India. Against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition and subsequent political events relating nationhood with the female body, Malani negotiates Medea as an emancipatory figure who shifts essentialized notions of womanhood into more complex narratives of violence, subjectivity, and liberation.
The Modern Formulation Of Chinese Art History And The Building Of A Nation In Early Twentieth-Century China, Chennie Huang
The Modern Formulation Of Chinese Art History And The Building Of A Nation In Early Twentieth-Century China, Chennie Huang
Dissertations and Theses
At the dawn of the twentieth century, the Chinese formulation of art history underwent dramatic changes. It moved away from the traditional narratives that did not follow a strict chronology to adopt the Western linear model which emphasizes progress and national identity. Based on the premodern tradition, the modern formulations of Chinese art history began as a political strategy for nation building amid the political upheavals, including military attacks on China that led to the end of Qing imperial rule and the beginning of the Republican era (1912-1949).
In the early 1900s, while exiled in Japan, Liang Qichao 梁啟超 (1873-1929), …
Prey And Predators, Roberta Zamma Gallarati
Prey And Predators, Roberta Zamma Gallarati
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This exhibition focuses mainly on the relationship between Prey and Predators in the animal world. The idea comes from the many documentaries I watch about animals. In particular, I love the pent-up tension that is created moments before the predator attacks. What I want to represent in my drawings is role changing or the exception to the rule, when the traditional predator becomes a prey and vice versa. The subverted roles offer a new perspective of the Prey and Predator relationship by empowering the traditional prey with the same courage, strategy, and aggressiveness of the traditional predators in a sort …

This article is a preliminary study that explores past events of the Dutch East Indies colonial government, specifically describing criminal cases of hate speech or haatzaai depicted in newspaper news between 1879 and 1942. The Dutch East Indies colonial government controlled freedom of thought, expression, and politics of the native population by using the legal instruments Wetboek van Strafrecht voor Nederlandsch Indie, especially articles 154, 155, 156, and 157. These four articles are known as haatzaai artikelen. This regulation was published and enforced in the Dutch East Indies in 1918. This article uses twenty-eight newspaper news articles published in ten …
A Girl Is A Girl Is A Girl, Paige Lizbeth Morris
A Girl Is A Girl Is A Girl, Paige Lizbeth Morris
Theses and Dissertations
It is well known that Western society uses men’s visual pleasure as a means to determine womxn’s value; her success is dependent on her compliance with culturally determined beauty standards. This process turns womxn into commodities and reinforces notions of gender complementarity, perpetuating a lifetime of servitude to patriarchal ideologies. It reminds the non-male that she is incomplete, insufficient, insignificant, and so easily dismissable. It forces her to be dependent, to shut up, to sit down, and to enjoy it.
In an effort to reject these presumed histories and narrow connotations of womxn, I have analyzed my gender performance in …
Reclaiming Beercraft- A Sensory Experience, Zishan Zeng
Reclaiming Beercraft- A Sensory Experience, Zishan Zeng
Theses and Dissertations
The senses are mainly a source of arousal, enjoyment and pain and are of vital importance for the human body. They are also important because sensory perception is typical of many cultural artifacts and is given unique intensities and extensions, shapes and meanings through them (Heywood, 2017). As Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa stated, “architecture is the art of reconciliation between ourselves and the world, and this mediation takes place through the senses” (Pallasmaa, 2012). To make architecture truly meaningful, it should be able to awaken all the senses.
The way we feel, smell, and even taste is hard to capture. …

Decolonizing Gender Identities In Indonesia: A Study Of Bissu ‘The Trans-Religious Leader’ In Bugis People, Petsy Jessy Ismoyo
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is one of the pillars of Indonesia that has placed our nation and nationess to a diversity of identity, from genders, tribes, religions, to cultures. Indonesia has a long history of gender diversity that recognized various gender identities as part of the culture. Henceforth, In Indonesia, gender is not perceived in a binary way between male or female, masculine and feminine, without giving the ‘third space’ to other genders and sexuality. For example, Bugis people recognize five genders: oroané, makkunrai, calabai, calalai, and bissu, which will be examined further in this paper. In reality, a lively debate …
