Creating Knowledge

It is my great pleasure to introduce the sixth volume of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ “Creating Knowledge,” our undergraduate student scholarship and research journal. First published in 2008, the journal is the outcome of an initiative to enhance and enrich the academic quality of the student experience within the college. Through this publication, the college seeks to encourage students to become actively engaged in creating scholarship and research and gives them a venue for the publication of their essays.

The Muslim-majority countries long had been considered to be free of HIV/AIDS epidemic because of their strict religious and moral codes. However, the HIV prevalence rates are increasing in some Islamic states, and even more or so rapidly in a several cases that it is no longer valid to assume the Islamic religion protects its followers from the risks of contracting HIV. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) also known as Female Genital Cutting (FGC) captured my interest the first time I heard about the practice. I assumed, wrongly, that it was only practiced in remote areas of Africa where educational opportunities were few and outside influences were nil. After researching the topic it is clear that is not the case. FGM is practiced in many countries in Africa, the Middle East, and around the world. The main goal of this research is to analyze the impact of student exchange as a component of soft power in American foreign policy. Since September 11, 2001 there has been a significant increase in the number of Muslim international students enrolled in American institutions. In addition, there has been an increase in study abroad programs to predominantly Muslim countries by American students. I analyze the potential benefit to America’s foreign policy of accepting these international students and sending American students abroad. Institutionalization And Reform: The Case Of The National Democratic Party In Egypt, Safinaz El Tarouty

This thesis examines the National Democratic Party in Egypt (NDP). It assesses the internal dynamics and reforms of the party between 2000 and 2004 and asks to what extent these reforms have influenced the nature and institutionalization of the party. Starting from the emergence of the Egyptian republic, it traces the rise and development of the consecutive single parties under Nasser and the creation of the NDP under Sadat in 1978. This thesis suggests that the reforms of 2000 do not appear to have significantly increased the level of institutionalization of Egypt’s persistently dominant party. It argues that the reforms …
