Arab Authors’ Responses To Cross-Cultural Experiences With Europe: The Contrasting Perspectives Of ‘Abd Al-Rahman Al-Jabarti And Rifa‘A Al-Tahtawi, Clara R. Keuss

Global Tides

This article contrasts the ways in which major Arab authors of the early or pre- Nahda (Ar. "awakening," "renaissance") period (ca. 1850-1950) responded to the French during and after the Napoleonic occupation of Egypt (1798-1801), specifically through Abd al-Rahman al-Jabarti’s contemporary chronicles of the invasion and Rifa'a al-Tahtawi's account of his five-year stay in Paris (1826-31). In so doing, it explores how or whether these reflections on the European other inflected the later development of modern Arabic narrative and concepts of Egyptian identity.

This article presents an edition and a translation of a papyrus fragment from the Beinecke Library at Yale (P.CtYBR inv. 2598), together with a brief commentary. This literary fragment, containing two verses of poetry, is interesting because it provides an oriental source for a text until then known only through the famous Andalusian work of Ibn ʿAbd Rabbih, al-ʿIqd al-farīd; it also serves as an example of an informal mode of written transmission of Arabic poetry.

In this thesis, I question whether the authenticity of modernism derives from its temporality period or its literary content while concurrently investigating several poems by Lebanese authors Kahlil Gibran and Nadia Tuéni and Syrian poet Adonis. When, on August 13, 2020, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced it was normalizing relations with the state of Israel, few could have predicted the effects it would have. However, since the Emirati decision, three other Arab countries - Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco - have reached agreements with Tel Aviv to normalize relations. This paper examines the wemen are portrayed in the Palestinian folktales. Of special interest are the so-cial spiritual, psychological and sexual portrayal of women in the roles they assume: mother, sister, wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and fellow wife. It also investigates both the negative and positive mythical depictions of women in Palestinian folk tales. Later, the paper draws a comparison between this portrayal and the way women are featured in modern social and psychological science. Inspired by the relevant approaches, particularly the mythical ap-proach, the paper used the descriptive analytical approach.

This article argues that the 1921 collection of diasporic short stories Hikayat al-mahjar, written by ‘Abd al-Masih Haddad, makes a unique and notable contribution to mahjar literature by mobilizing formal literary techniques and innovative thematic content to capture a Syrian immigrant community engaged in a transitional moment in America.
