West Virginia University's contribution to the foundation of modern folk music scholarship is widely recognized. Due to the pioneering achievements of its faculty, the University became an important center of folksong scholarship in the 1920s and 30s. John Harrington Cox's Folk-Songs of the South' served as both precedent and pattern for the myriad of subsequent publications upon which folksong study is based.Various works by Josiah Combs, who taught at the University for but a few years, and Louis Watson Chappell, who remained throughout his career, are equally notable if less obviously influential. In January of 1937, the largest flood of record hit the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys. Lowell Thomas compared the flood of 1937 with the Great Flood of the Bible. While this exaggerates somewhat the magnitude of the disaster, the people of the Tri-State area must have felt their world was coming to an end; indeed, for the individuals killed in the deluge, their world did end. Yet, the Tri-State and the Ohio Valley survived the inundation. The items appear to have been collected by the Sterrett family as they were party to many of the deed transactions. Parties of the sales include Alexander E. Spotswood and Betsey Washington Spotswood, William Trotter and Mary Trotter, Walter Newman and Ellen Newman, Bushrod Washington Jr., Henry C./G.
