The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at the University of Texas at San Antonio performed archeological testing at the Pavo Real site (41BX52) between November 2006 and June 2007 for HNTB. The purpose of archeological testing was to determine the depth of construction fill and the presence, location and, if possible, condition, of any remnant archeological deposits. Proposed improvements along Loop 1604 include bridge bents that will be constructed east of Leon Creek and west of the IH-10/Loop 1604 interchange overpass. Impacts associated with proposed improvements will occur within the boundaries and in the immediate vicinity of 41BX52. Archeological testing …

On December 5, 2007, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at the University of Texas San Antonio conducted archaeological investigations, by means of backhoe trenching, where Pyron Avenue intersects with Old San Antonio River channel within the footprint of the proposed South Area Lift Station elimination project. Investigations at this location were carried out under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 4732, under contract Bain Medina Bain Inc. to meet compliance with the City of San Antonio’s Unified Code of Development and the requirements of the Texas Antiquities Code. The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) conducted mechanical augering on land that was used for the former City of San Antonio Nursery and Parks and Maintenance Facility. Furthermore, a surface inspection of the San Antonio Zoo Eagle mini-track proposed re-alignment was also conducted. During investigations prehistoric site 41BX1773 was recorded in the northern section of the APE. Only one piece of fire-cracked rock and a railroad spike were collected during the surface inspection along the proposed San Antonio Zoo Eagle re-alignment. Archaeological investigations were conducted under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 4647. …

The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of the University of Texas at San Antonio conducted National Register of Historic Places eligibility testing at archeological site 41BX1749 located in southwest Bexar County, Texas. The work was completed under a contract with the HNTB Corporation (contracted by TxDOT) as part of the proposed Loop 410 Southwest Improvement Project, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. Testing of the site included mechanical auger boring, backhoe trenching and three 1-x-1 meter test units. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) is the current ROW and the proposed new ROW along Loop 410 and the three highways intersected by the loop. From May 2004 through the summer of 2008 and on behalf of the Environmental Affairs Division (ENV) of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) undertook extensive archaeological investigations and analyses on the Gatlin site, 41KR621, located on the Guadalupe River, Kerr County, Texas. Work at the site was necessitated by the planned 1.15-mile extension of Spur 98 from its current limits to cross the Guadalupe River and terminate at FM 1338. Prewitt and Associates, Inc., completed an evaluation of the western portion of Subarea C at 41CV1310 on the Fort Hood Military Reservation in June and July 2007. The work was conducted for the Texas Department of Transportation in conjunction with the proposed Northeast Copperas Cove Bypass in southern Coryell County. Fieldwork included a resurvey of the area and hand excavation of shovel tests and test units. Maximum dimensions of the tested landform, a small segment of Holocene terrace (T) adjacent to 1 House Creek, are 65x40 m, or 2,600 m2. SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted significance testing excavations at site 41SS164, San Saba County, Texas on behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The tested portion of the site is in TxDOT’s right-of-way (ROW) of County Road (CR) 228 on the eastern bank of Richland Springs Creek, a tributary of the San Saba River. SWCA performed the investigations under General Services Contract #575XXSA007, Work Authorization #575 21 SA007, and Texas Antiquities Permit 4156. The final report was written under General Services Contract #577XXSA002, Work Authorization #577 05 SA002.

Data recovery excavations at the Varga Site were conducted in two phases during 2002 by archeologists from the Cultural Resources Department of TRC Environmental Corporation’s (TRC’s) Austin office under contract to Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Scientific Service Contract No. 572XXSA004. This mitigation program was necessitated by the proposed reconstruction of the crossing of a Ranch to Market Road over Hackberry Creek, immediately south of the site in northeastern Edwards County. These archeological investigations were conducted as part of the responsibilities of TxDOT under existing federal and state legislation for the protection of cultural resources.

Fairfield Lake State Park occupies 1,460 acres in Freestone County, approximately five miles northeast of Fairfield, Texas. The land was acquired for lease by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) from Texas Utilities in the 1970s. Under provisions of the Texas Antiquities Code, TPWD is responsible for managing any possible cultural resources on park land. This cultural resource inventory by the Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS), Texas State University- San Marcos, was conducted between November 2005 and October 2006, under Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
