Florida had hardly taken her place in the Union when the controversy of 1850 forced her to consider the advisability and probable necessity of breaking the ties so recently formed. The popular verdict in that year was for the Union. But in the succeeding decade there were constant assertions of the right of, and probable necessity for secession, which were climaxed in 1861 by secession itself. Just what fears and hopes, what prejudices and passions, operated during that fateful decade to change the verdict from Union to Disunion cannot be gauged with precision ; but surface manifestations of the process …

The legislative council of Florida met and organized at Pensacola on the 22d July. The governor administered the oath to the members to support the constitution of the United States, &c. A motion was made by Mr. Miller to proceed to elect. a president-the council adjourned without going into an election. On the 23d the council having met, Mr. Bronaugh was called to the chair, when they proceeded to elect a president, and the choice was unanimous of James C. Bronaugh, esq. of Pensacola.

Any attempt to investigate the origin and customs of the aborigines of Florida through reliance on written materials is almost immediately frustrated by the paucity of such material and the scantiness of data available. Even an attempt to summarize the work done by field investigators leads to the baffling task of trying to reconcile conflicting theories, a condition that arises from the fact that the conclusions reached as to the origin, antiquity, and life of the early peoples of Florida are so indefinite. The life of William Pope DuVal, the first civil governor of the territory of Florida, should be an attractive study for anyone who is interested in the colorful characters of our frontier history. He belongs to the same class of pioneers as Sam Houston of Texas. Frontiersmen of this type not only were among the vanguard as settlers but also remained long in the new settlements as leaders in their development.
