The territory embraced within the state of Florida was not acquired by the United States through direct purchase from Spain. The treaty ceding this territory was drawn around a claim clause of this country and its citizens against the Spanish government for alleged damages for various reasons. The United States government agreed to cancel its claims and assume the payment of those of its citizens to an amount not exceeding five million dollars, in consideration of which Spain ceded Florida. The transfer of government was accomplished in July, 1821; whereupon General Andrew Jackson became provisional governor.

The second instalment of documents relating to the plantations of El Destino and Chemonie contains records of Chemonie during its first year as part of the Jones property. The estate was located some six miles north of El Destino in Leon County, and was purchased by Mary Savage Nuttall a few months before her marriage to George Noble Jones. The object of the purchase was to give employment to some eighty negroes whom the future Mrs. Jones had inherited from the estate of an uncle, William Savage. The Seminole War. - The treaty negotiated with the Florida tribes of Indians at Moultrie Creek, September 18, 1823, provided for their removal to a location on the peninsula designated in the treaty, but by an additional article some of the principal chiefs and their connections were allowed to remain in Middle Florida upon certain bodies of land granted to them for their use and occupation. The main body of the Indians removed to the district assigned to them during the winter of 1824. They had left their old homes and hunting grounds with great reluctance. They were not satisfied …

St. Francis Barracks, once the home of the sons of St. Francis, is perhaps the only religious edifice ever taken and used continuously by the United States for military purposes. This came about through the treaty made with Spain and not by an act of hostility against the Catholic Church. The Franciscans will probably never again take possession of their ancient home. Surely, though, some day-and may it be soon-there will be some place in Florida to which they will be called to renew the work so successfully and efficiently performed by their saintly and courageous predecessors.

This essay was awarded a first prize in the Irving Bacheller-Florida Historical Society contest for Florida high-school students, held at Rollins College under the direction of Alfred J. Hanna, February twenty-first last. Mr. Curry, its author, is a student in Orlando High School. The other prize-winners and the subjects of their essays were: Ruthjeanne Bellamy, also of Orlando High School, who wrote on Pirates of the Florida Coast; Nellie Kennedy, of Hernando High School, Brooksville, who wrote on the same subject; and Chester R. Yates, of Plant City High School, on Territorial and Early Statehood of Florida.

It was in January, 1827, that Jefferson County was formed out of Leon, with its western boundary nearly the same as at present and the eastern boundary remaining at the Suwannee until December, 1827, when Madison County was established. Thus Jefferson County became a separate territorial division and governmental organization, after being at times a part of the provinces of East Florida and West Florida, and of the counties of Escambia, Jackson, Gadsden, and Leon. It extends from the Georgia line to the Gulf, a distance of about forty miles, and at the base line is about twenty miles wide. …

The accompanying history of Jefferson County, Florida, was prepared by Senator Pasco at the time of the dedication of the court house at Monticello in 1910, and was in part used by him in an address on that occasion. As first written the history of this region was traced from the earliest times to 1910; but because much relating to the period prior to the establishment of the county in 1827 has appeared in other articles in the QUARTERLY the narrative will begin with that year.
