This journal is a record of a journey made by John Innerarity, a partner in the firm of John Forbes & Co., into the Creek Nation and of a talk with the chiefs of that nation assembled to make a settlement with him for debts of the nation to the company. The original manuscript is in the possession of Mrs. John W. Greenslade, of Washington, D. C., a great-granddaughter of the journalist, to whom grateful acknowledgment is made.

Author’s Note. In November, 1927, Dr. Thomas B. Hall of Miami Beach, Florida, wrote me that the State Historical Society of Missouri was in possession of his great-grandfather’s papers written while in Florida. His great-grandfather was Lieut. Col. (afterward General) Thomas Adam Smith, who commanded the United States regulars in Florida in 1812-13. Through the courtesy of Arthur T. Williams, President of the Florida Historical Society, and Floyd C. Shoemaker, Secretary of the State Historical Society of Missouri, I obtained copies of the papers alluded to. Seventeen years ago Florida entered the fifth century of her history under European influence. Her past four centuries have been full to overflowing with conquests and colonization schemes fairly reeking with romantic adventure, and constitute a period difficult to rival in the colonial history of any commonwealth. Many fortunes, beginning in 1513 with that of Ponce de Leon and to a much larger extent in 1539 with that of Hernando de Soto, and including the fabulous sums of the boom in 1925, have been lavished on its shores. Beside the road leading westward from St. Augustine to Picolata on the St. Johns River there is a permanent marker with this inscription: THEATRICAL TROUP KILLED BY INDIANS, MAY 23, 1840. Varying accounts of this attack suggested a search for a contemporaneous narrative, and this extract from the Florida Herald of St. Augustine, the issue of May 29, 1840, appears to be the most trustworthy of those found. In this address there may be perceived something of the shock and consternation resulting among the residents of British Florida from the sudden intelligence that the country was to be handed back to Spain and desuetude, and they were to be homeless. The high historical value of the document, however, lies in that it is a list of “the principal inhabitants of East Florida” at the time of the cession.

John Forbes was probably, born in Scotland. He received his education at King’s College in old Aberdeen, where he passed through the ordinary course of Greek, mathematics, and philosophy, and attended lectures in divinity. The University of Aberdeen conferred on him the degree of Master of Arts in the spring of 1763; the principal and masters certifying at that time that he had “behaved with great Modesty & Discretion, was diligent in his Studies, & made very good Progress in the different Branches of Learning.” On the 16th of May, 1763, he was recommended to the bishops of the Church …

In 1811, when war clouds between the United States and Great Britain were gathering, the United States sent commissioners to Spanish Florida seeking a temporary cession to prevent its occupancy by the British in case of war. As might be expected Spain would not consent to such an arrangement, whereupon General George Mathews, representing the United States government in this negotiation, devised a plan to bring about a cession through the medium of a revolution of the inhabitants of East Florida, who would be assisted by residents of Georgia and by the regular armed forces of the United States.
