Edward A. Perry, Yankee General Of The Florida Brigade, Sigsbee C. Prince Jr.

Florida’s Civil War hero, Edward Alysworth Perry, was a transplanted Yankee, born March 15, 1831, on a farm near Richmond, Massachusetts. He was a descendant of old New England stock which had migrated to America in the 1630’s. Arthur Perry, the first of the family to arrive in New England, was a member of a militia artillery company in Boston about 1638. From Boston the descendants of Arthur Perry migrated into Connecticut and western Massachusetts. Most of the early Perrys were farmers although some were ministers and a few dabbled in local politics.

The siege and capture of the British forts at Pensacola in April and May of 1781 brought to a climax Spanish participation in the American Revolution. The project was begun by Bernardo de GaIvez, the young governor of Louisiana who had already conquered the British posts in the Mississippi Valley and at Mobile Bay. The British still held out at Pensacola, their principal establishment in the Gulf of Mexico. Galvez landed there on March 18, and his force was soon augmented by troops from Mobile and New Orleans. The journal of Lieutenant Robert C. Buchanan, adjutant of the Fourth Infantry, contains the chronicle of the operations of a unit in the campaign against the Seminole Indians from November 1837 to January 1838. Written during the pursuit of the Seminole Indians along the Kissimmee river and Lake Okeechobee, the journal reveals the conditions under which the soldiers lived and fought, his description of the country, and his views on the Seminoles and the war. There is also a description of the famous battle at Lake Okeechobee on December 25, 1837, for which action Buchanan received a citation.

This letter of Senator Yulee’s was published in the Tallahassee Floridian and Journal of June 9, 1860 and copied in the St. Augustine Examiner of June 23, 1860. The original draft in the handwriting of Yulee, with numerous corrections also in his hand, is among the Yulee Papers at the University of Florida.

Much has been written about the secession movement in the South, about the fire-eaters, the defenders of state rights, the evolution of theories to protect minority property rights, and the development of that sectionalism which is sometimes termed “Southern nationalism.” Less is heard about Southern defenders of the Union-men who conceived of their national loyalty as devotion to the federal union rather than to a section. These latter men, it is true, were in a minority in the South, but they were usually men of wealth and position who were able to make their views known if not popular.

It was successful in every way, with a large attendance from various parts of the State. At this distance in time from the events of 1864 it is not possible to prepare a satisfactorily complete picture of the 1864 Federal campaign in East Florida. Basic for such a study is the extended series of orders and reports of Federal and Confederate general officers and unit commanders preserved in the War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Series I, Volume XXXV, Parts 1 and 2,1891 (page numbers in these volumes are hereafter cited in parentheses). A careful consideration of these leads to the conclusion that many gaps exist in the series.

This essay describes the structure, pedagogy, and intent behind “Intersections,” a gallery program at the Art Institute of Chicago that occurred monthly between November 2016 and March 2020. The program, which continues less frequently and in a virtual format today, positions artworks as catalysts for helping people make sense of current events and timely issues. In doing so, it reframes adult learning in the museum as collaborative, dialogic, and open-ended, rather than setting up an experience that is primarily expert-driven and informational. Many sports in the West, specifically in American culture, permit religious symbols and practices. Yet Muslim women have been subject to discrimination, bigotry, and disrespect for wearing or wanting to wear a hijab. This study uses philosophical theory, data, and cultural information to explore the stigma behind Muslim women in America and their participation in the sporting activities that are held here. This piece explains how the hijab’s true meaning is dismantled through American culture and the religious meaning behind it, argues why it should be allowed in sporting events, and suggests ways to prevent discrimination against Muslim women who …

This thesis explores why adults read comic books. This research used the ethnographic method and interviewing eleven people, four women, seven male, as its primary source. Based on information and common themes gathered from interviews, I built this thesis into one introduction, three body chapters, and a conclusion.

In the first chapter, I argued that comics could function the same as myths and explained this function and related examples under the “mythic effect” name. In the second chapter, I discussed how my informants use reading comics as a means to escape their everyday lives and how sometimes this escapism carries …
