Tallahassee was a properous community, and the tastes of her citizens on the eve of the Civil War ran to luxury goods and labor-saving devices as indicated in the daybook for 1860-1863 of the William P. Slusser store on Monroe Street, Tallahassee. In the fall of the year, when schooners, barks, and brigs arrived at St. Marks port to pick up the some 50,000 bales of cotton shipped yearly out of Apalachee Bay, the vessels unloaded a variety of consumer goods that were eagerly awaited: bathtubs, washing machines to replace or at least to supplement scrub boards, and pumps and …

In accord with provisions of the Reconstruction Acts, members of the Florida constitutional convention assembled in Tallahassee in mid-January of 1868. An examination of the historiography of this controversial gathering, a body charged with framing the constitution which was to take effect when the state was returned to civilian rule, quickly reveals the existence of the standard Dunningite-revisionist dispute which has so characterized most writing on the postwar South. William Watson Davis, who completed his classic work on Reconstruction in Florida under the direction of William A. My dissertation examines the ways in which the short-story cycle has provided a unique generic framework for representing and investigating the complex interplay of contending forces that constitute what we think of as the American South. Often confused with a collection of disparate short stories or a novel, the short-story cycle is a collection of short stories in which each story is independent, but simultaneously interrelated to one another. Although the South has produced a number of short-story cycles or linked story collections, scholars have not paid much attention to the connection between the genre/form and the region. There are currently 17.42 million veterans living in America today. These heroes dedicated their services in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Gulf War, leaving home and giving up the comforts of stability, family, and guaranteed safety to ensure that America remains a stable and safe place for individuals and families to call home, yet upon returning home themselves, our nation’s veterans have had to face immense hardships. Legacy books in colonial America were instruments for the transmission of cultural values between generations: the dying mother (usually) instructing and advising children on the path to salvation and heavenly reunions. They were a popular and influential form of women’s discourse that distilled the ideologies of the religious establishment into practical and emotional lessons for lay persons, especially the young.

This collection draws together legacy texts written by colonial American women and girls: five mother’s legacy books and two legacies by children, organized here chronologically. These legacies were writ­ten in anticipation of dying, making awareness of death central to the …

Mary Doria Russell’s The Women of the Copper Country is a fictionalized historical account of the 1913 mining strike in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Significantly in this strike, a great deal of leadership was focused in the Union’s Women’s Auxiliary. In particular, one woman formed the backbone of the local movement. Known by her community as Big Annie, Anna Klobuchar Clements was the heart of the 1913 strike. Memories of her bravery linger today in the form of recorded testimonies by elderly community members, immortalization in plaques and songs, and Russell’s popular novel. Loss Of Identity On Pensacola's Past: A Creole Footnote, Donald H. Bragaw

Research into the status of Pensacola’s blacks during the progressive era uncovers an interesting sidelight into the history of the city’s Creole population. It is a glimpse into the decline of a once-proud tradition. It is also indicative of the Creole’s ambivalent posture as they were forced by increasing turn-of-the-century racist pressures to declare their allegiance to, or to throw in their lot with, the black or white race. In being forced to “declare” meant for many of the Creoles a loss of their separate identity.

One of Florida’s most tragic incidents occurred when Governor James Moore of South Carolina and his small army composed of 1,000 Indians and fifty whites moved into the Apalachee area of North Florida and laid waste to what had been the center of the Franciscan missions. Accounts of this raid describe the gallant defense made at Ayubale mission by Father Miranda and his neophytes, the defeat of the relief column from San Luis under command of Captain Ruiz Mexia, the torture of captives, the destruction of the Apalachee villages, and the removal of 3,000 or more Apalachees for resettlement in …

Cruise Of The Minnehaha, Pat Dodson

In the winter of 1891-1892 four men— three brothers, Stanley, Robert, and Edward Bullock, and their friend, A. E. Woodham — sailed a thirty-foot sloop, the Minnehaha, from Narcoossee on East Lake Tohopekaliga on a round trip down the Kissimmee River to Lake Okeechobee and out to the Gulf of Mexico via the Caloosahatchee River. They began the trip that fall down the Kissimmee River, opened a few years before by Hamilton Disston’s dredges. Leaving November 26, they reached Marco on January 9 and returned home February 8. They followed a tortuous route, covering about 1,000 miles in seventy-three days.

Pensacola during the 1820s was hardly more than a small frontier town, yet its citizens, with a predominately French and Spanish background, enthusiastically supported a theatre. Its importance is not that major theatrical personalities were attracted to the community, but that such a remote town, still the center of Indian trade, would welcome a theatre at all. The desire and support of dramatic entertainment suggests a different perspective from the conception of Pensacola during this period as a raw frontier town surrounded by wilderness.
