John Muir Newsletter university of the pacific fall, 1992 NATURE AND THE HUMAN SPIM volume 2, number 4 '» TOTIfi TRANSFORMATION OF HENRY LOOMIS by Ron Limbaugh A few years ago, while working on a research project at Yale's Sterling Memorial Library, I ran across a 90-page handwritten journal written by Henry Bradford Loomis, son of a prominent Yale mathematician and astronomer, an irresolute companion of John Muir during a three-month trip to Alaska in 1890. In labored but legible longhand, Loomis chronicled the expedition.' It is a fascinating record. Not only does it provide a starkly contrasting view to …

Cultural Resources Monitoring/Survey Of A Jtf-6 Action, Van Horn, Texas Sector, Frank Winchell, George Brown, Maynard B. Cliff, Sherrian K. Edwards

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This report presents the results of cultural resources monitoring and survey activities connected with a Department of Defense (DOD) Joint Task Force Six (JTF-6) project in southern Hudspeth and Culberson, western Jeff Davis, and northern Presidio Counties, Texas. These cultural resource activities were prompted by road improvement activities initiated by the U.S. Border Patrol. The road improvement activities were designed to aid the U.S. Border Patrol in their battle against illegal drug trade and smuggling operations along the U.S.-Mexico border. Geo-Marine, Inc. conducted the survey as part of an indefinite delivery contract with the Fort Worth District of the U.S. …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Phase III data recovery investigations at one historic and three prehistoric sites, augmented by additional survey and off-site geological investigations, were conducted at Lake Alan Henry (formerly Justiceburg Reservoir) on the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River in Garza and Kent counties, Texas, during the fall and winter of 1990-1991. Descriptive data from this first of three field seasons of data recovery are presented here in anticipation of a final synthetic report that will relate all the investigations to a series of research design hypotheses. Analysis of surface distributions at 41KT42, a late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century ranch line …

Trading Post Tales: Biography Of An Indian Trader On The Navajo Reservation, Nancy Peake May 1992

Trading Post Tales: Biography Of An Indian Trader On The Navajo Reservation, Nancy Peake

American Studies ETDs

Walter M. Kennedy is a living anachronism who spent half a century--from the pre-World War II era into the 1980s--practicing an almost mythical career on isolated trading posts on the Navajo Reservation. Kennedy, an Anglo, and his Native American clientele interacted and conducted business in much the same way as their historical predecessors, with little regard for contemporary socio-cultural and economic circumstances prevailing in the “outside world.” His personal memoirs--over five hundred pages of penciled notes--vividly recreate those experiences. The transcription and editing of those notes, enhanced by an extensive oral history project, comprise one element of this dissertation.

Success And Failure In The Life Of Edwin Arlington Robinson, Katey Ford May 1992

Success And Failure In The Life Of Edwin Arlington Robinson, Katey Ford

Honors Theses

Edwin Arlington Robinson always felt that writing poetry was the only career that he could pursue in his life, but also always worried whether it was a worthy pursuit in the eyes of the culture in which he was raised. In a small town like Gardiner, Maine, where the 1690s' Puritan ethic was nearly as strong centuries later in the 1890s, the concept of a career in poetry or any artistic pursuit was absurd but not nearly as absurd as being successful at it. His grounding in Gardiner's values left an indelible stamp on his life and his poetry. Like …

Musical Quotation In The Music Of George Crumb, Richard M. Dowell May 1992

Musical Quotation In The Music Of George Crumb, Richard M. Dowell

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates American composer George Crumb's employment of musical quotation in his works from 1962 to 1985. The thesis also contains a brief biography of the composer and overviews of his major compositional style traits and his musical influences. Because Crumb often quotes from the same composers and musics that have influenced his musical style, the subject musical influences is related to the main thesis, musical quotation. Also, Crumb sometimes borrows a specific gesture from another composer's work without actually quoting it--that is making significant note and/or rhythm alterations; this type of borrowing is described by Crumb as a …

Sons Of A Trackless Forest: The Cumberland Long Hunters Of The Eighteenth Century, Mark A. Baker May 1992

Sons Of A Trackless Forest: The Cumberland Long Hunters Of The Eighteenth Century, Mark A. Baker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For much of America's history, a certain fascination has existed in American culture with the lifestyle of the woodsman who made the hardwood wilderness his home. Over time this fascination has given birth to a collection of romantic traits firmly identified with such a frontiersman.

The requirements for survival in a deep wilderness forced the pre-American Revolution era woodsman turned long hunter, to be "Indian," to demonstrate a high level of marksmanship, and ultimately to draw most of his needs from the bounty of the forest. Such requirements tended to promote the popular conceptions surrounding the eastern frontiersman. Looking beyond …

John Muir Newsle spring, 1992 university of the pacific volume 2, number 2 ON EARLY YOSEMITE ARTISTS AND TOURISM Katherine M. Littell of Harvard University has published a short essay about early Yosemite artists entitled, "Chris Jorgensen and the Pioneer Artists of Yosemite." It appeared in the fall, 1990 issue of the Harvard Graduate Society Newsletter. Littell reports that nineteenth century artists were very much responsible for the political viability of Yosemite. The new Yosemite Grant needed tourism to be finacially stable. California had accepted administration of Yosemite in 1866 but was not given any funds by the federal government …
