Mule Racing In The Mississippi Delta, 1938-1950, Karen Marie Glynn May 1995

Mule Racing In The Mississippi Delta, 1938-1950, Karen Marie Glynn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The cultural values of white planters and the African-American community converged during the public performance of mule racing in the Mississippi Delta. Afraid of being humiliated in public by unskilled black riders representing their plantations on unpredictable mules, planters spent time and money to find fast mules and talented hostlers. The planters' overt behavior acknowledging skilled African-American hostlers transcended the Sambo-style stereotype of mule racing promoted by the white community. Thus, they temporarily allied their values with those of the African-American community, which interpreted the races as a celebration of the skills of black farm hands. This research paper pieces …

Female Millworkers And The Mechanization Of Textile Production: The Boston Manufacturing Company Of Waltham, Massachusetts, 1813 To 1822, Lois Bayer Gonzales Apr 1995

Female Millworkers And The Mechanization Of Textile Production: The Boston Manufacturing Company Of Waltham, Massachusetts, 1813 To 1822, Lois Bayer Gonzales

American Studies ETDs

When the Boston Manufacturing Company of Waltham, Massachusetts developed mechanized cotton textile production between 1850 and 1821, female millworkers had the opportunity to gain mechanical expertise and utilize it to overcome low wages and subordination. Since management systematically used the two mills to test new machine designs, female operatives played an important role in evaluating and improving industrial technology.

This study follows the development of machinery and women's careers as revealed in the company's surviving payroll ledgers. To identify the social characteristics of the work force, the majority of the 616 millworkers employed between 1817 to 1822 were traced to …

Dwyer (Editor's note: Michelle Dwyer is an English and Philosophy double major at the University of the Pacific. This paper was prepared in the fall of 1994 for an undergraduate course, "John Muir and the American Environment. ") Many question whether John Muir followed traditional Christianity, mystic pantheism, ora combination of the two. After reading many of Muir's writings, it seems to me that he follows the religious beliefs of Zen Buddhism closely enough to say that Muir understood …

The Inner Voice, Janis Ruth Bagnall Cochrane Apr 1995

The Inner Voice, Janis Ruth Bagnall Cochrane

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The scope of this project is two-fold. The key purpose is to demonstrate the relationship between the voice of Lee Smith, a Southern writer from Appalachia and the voice of the author, another Southern writer from the Outer Banks. The foremost conclusion that has been drawn is that a writer's voice comes from deep inside the writer's unconscious. It is a product of generations of experiences that have embedded themselves in the writer's psyche. Some of the assumptions and prejudices surrounding southern women are discussed to some degree.

The second purpose is for this writer to show her work. This …

Willa Cather's Death Comes For The Archbishop: Narrative And Historical Inspiration, Melissa L. Hamilton Apr 1995

Willa Cather's Death Comes For The Archbishop: Narrative And Historical Inspiration, Melissa L. Hamilton

English Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to look at Willa Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop and investigate Cather's use of history as both a foundation and inspiration for her narrative. Cather uses several "historical" documents for the structure of her book, ranging from the biography of Father Joseph P. Machebeuf to the frescoes of St. Genevieve by the Puvis de Chavannes. It has also been commonly argued that Cather's representations of some historical figures in this narrative do not accurately reflect historical record. This study will examine Cather's representation of certain historical figures against the commonly held historical images …

Stephen Crane And "The Subtle Brotherhood Of Men", Christian Robert Weisser Apr 1995

Stephen Crane And "The Subtle Brotherhood Of Men", Christian Robert Weisser

English Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the development of the works of Stephen Crane. Most critical studies define his philosophy strictly within the boundaries of Naturalism. A close examination of his novels and short stories shows a development towards a more melioristic view of mankind, one which endorses the value of brotherhood and group relations. Based on certain biographical, philosophical and cultural factors, Crane's work emerges as progressively more and more concerned with the possibility of effective human solidarity.

No Other Track: Russell Hoban And The Literary Pilgrim, Eric G. Waggoner Apr 1995

No Other Track: Russell Hoban And The Literary Pilgrim, Eric G. Waggoner

English Theses & Dissertations

This study will examine the novels of Russell Hoban, an American-born writer living and working in London, and their consistent engagement of the idea of pilgrimage: the spiritual and geographical travel towards a particular goal as found in early Christian writing, as well as extant writings of other religions and cultures. After briefly tracing the social and literary history of the pilgrimage, I will examine each of Hoban's novels with an eye towards their secular revision of the pilgrimage motif, a revision which nonetheless retains a measure of spirituality.

Reading One Poet In Light Of Another: Herbert And Frost, James Boyd White Mar 1995

Reading One Poet In Light Of Another: Herbert And Frost, James Boyd White

Articles

In this paper I wish both to draw certain connections between Herbert and Frost and at the same time to say something in a general way about the process by which such connections can be made. It is with the latter question that I begin. Once the relation between two writers would have been thought of mainly in terms of "influence." And one might indeed argue that Herbert did have significant influence on Frost's poetic practice — if not directly, for Frost was not a great reader of Herbert, then indirectly, through Emerson, who was in many ways Frost's master …
