John Boyle O'Reilly And Moondyne (1878), Susanna Ashton
Publications
Arrested for treason against the British Crown and deported to the penal colonies of Australia, the Irish revolutionary John Boyle O'Reilly managed to escape to the United States and within a few years became one of Boston's most prominent political and literary figures, one of the best known Irish immigrants in the United States and one of the most charismatic individuals of the late nineteenth century. He wrote some of the most popular poetry of the period as well as one obscure but swashbuckling novel, Moondyne (1878), based in part upon the spectacular events of his own life. O Reilly …

Mechanical Angel: Carolyn Forché And The Material Projection Of Messianic History, Alan Clinton
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
The work of Carolyn Forché has always retained a political edge, with works such as the exploration of her Czech background in Gathering the Tribes (1976) and her account of visits to El Salvador in The Country Between Us (1981). Forché has been one of the leading poets who, in her own words, has combatted the self-censorship operative among American poets and writers that seemed to preclude writing about...historical events when those events were still unsafe (qtd. in Stein 147). Her third book of poems The Angel of History (published 13 years later), however, represents a new turn …

Spectral Riders: Multiple Heritage And The (De-)Construction Of History In Ken Kesey's Last Go Round, Alexandra Ganser
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Ken Kesey's novel Last Go Round (1994) expands on the tradition of the tall-tale; the protagonist and first-person narrator Johnathan E. Lee Spain looks back on his life at the sickbed of a comatose black rodeo champion, re-membering his days of glory (as the winner of the first Pendleton Round-Up) and his manifold experiences during this weekend.
Computerized Dynamic Visual Acuity With Volitional Head Movement In Patients With Vestibular Dysfunction, Erika L. Johnson
Computerized Dynamic Visual Acuity With Volitional Head Movement In Patients With Vestibular Dysfunction, Erika L. Johnson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Patients with non-compensated vestibular dysfunction frequently complain of the ability to maintain dynamic visual acuity during activities which require the movement of the head. When this occurs the patient is experiencing oscillopsia, which is the symptom resulting from a non-functional vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). To measure the presence of oscillopsia, tests of dynamic visual acuity (DVA) may be used.
A recent test of DVA has been reported which is administered while patients are walking on a treadmill. Although this test has been shown to be useful in evaluating DVA in patients, there are several disadvantages to treadmill use. These include physical …

Ammonia Sampling Using Ogawa® Passive Samplers, Paul Tate
Ammonia Sampling Using Ogawa® Passive Samplers, Paul Tate
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this research were to determine the efficacy of using the Ogawa® passive sampling device (PSD) to measure ammonia and to identify significant ammonia sources adjacent to Hillsborough and Tampa Bay. Ninety-four samplers were deployed over a 180-km2 area for two weeks in October 2001. Within the area sampled were located suburbs, an urban center, major highways, port activities, fertilizer manufacturing, wastewater treatment, coal-combustion power plants, warehousing and dairy farming. The sampled locations were arranged in a triangular grid pattern spaced 1.5 km apart. The pattern was designed to locate circular hot spots with a minimum radius …

The Dallas Floodway Extension project is designed to provide flood damage reduction and environmental restoration within the Trinity River flood plain between the Corinth Street Viaduct and Loop 12. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, contracted with Geo-Marine, Inc., to conduct an archeological assessment of the proposed Wetland Cell D. The archeological assessment was to identify any potential archeological sites that may be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and to provide an assessment of the potential for buried landforms in the project area that may have intact archeological resources present. Development Of An Aural Rehabilitation Cd-Rom, Sierra Macdonald
Development Of An Aural Rehabilitation Cd-Rom, Sierra Macdonald
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A need has been established for aural rehabilitation (AR) sessions throughout the years. The literature reviewed here demonstrates that new hearing aid users do benefit from a structured follow-up AR program. However, this need is often not met for a variety of patient and audiologist related factors. Therefore, an AR program that could be viewed at home has been suggested. I have developed a prototype for a CD-ROM based aural rehabilitation (AR) program. Included in the program are communication and speechreading strategies, which are the most prevalent materials in AR. The instructional and interaction portions of the prototype were created …
An Examination Of The Relationship Between The U-Titer Ii And Hearing Aid Benefit, Maura Koenig Kenworthy
An Examination Of The Relationship Between The U-Titer Ii And Hearing Aid Benefit, Maura Koenig Kenworthy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this study was to measure the effects of audiologic intervention on self-perceived quality of life in the elderly hearing-impaired population. The tested hypothesis was that hearing aid use would result in improved quality of life as measured by utilities. In this study, utilities were obtained using the U-Titer II, an interactive software program designed to measure an individual's health state preference or utility. This study also examined the issue of numeracy, which is described as an understanding of basic probability, and its effect with an individual's ability to accurately complete utilities.
Data from 54 individuals …

The Associative Style In Warren And Ashbery, John Burt
Robert Penn Warren Studies
Robert Penn Warren and John Ashbery write out of different backgrounds and quite often appeal to different audiences, but each is a master of the "associative style." A comparative look at both poets is highly instructive and serves to deepen our appreciation of their art.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
From October 2000 to February 2001, personnel from Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted National Register of Historic Places eligibility testing of nine sites located at Waco Lake in McLennan County, Texas. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, sponsored the project as a result of the proposed plan to raise the conservation pool level of the lake by 7 ft to 462 ft above mean sea level. Waco Lake is located in central McLennan County, Texas, on the west side of the City of Waco (Figure 1). It is on the Bosque River, with the dam lying ca. …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The objectives of this exploratory pollen analysis of selected samples from a sediment core taken at Hargrove Lake, Davy Crockett National Forest, Houston County, Texas, are to ascertain the quality of pollen preservation in the lake bottom matrix and to evaluate the potential of the pollen spectra deposited in the lake for providing information about former environmental conditions on Davy Crockett National Forest. Hargrove Lake is a natural lake in the floodplain of the Neches River in Houston County, Texas. The Hargrove Lake site (41H0150) lies a short distance to the west.
