In-Vivo Radiation Diode Dosimetry For Therapeutic Photon Beams, Amarjit Singh Saini
In-Vivo Radiation Diode Dosimetry For Therapeutic Photon Beams, Amarjit Singh Saini
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In-vivo dosimetry with diode detectors is used in radiation therapy as a quality assurance tool. The diode sensitivity under radiation depends upon temperature, dose rate and SDD (source-to-detector distance), field size, beam angle, and energy. This dissertation presents the first systematic and quantitative study of dosimetric characteristics for most of the commercial radiation diodes (n-type and p-type) under different radiation beams. In the temperature dependence study, the systematic study on the dose rate dependence of svwt (sensitivity variation with temperature) was performed. It was concluded that sufficient preirradiation can eliminate dose rate dependence of svwt. However, preirradiation cannot eliminate dose rate …
Generation And Characterization Of An Attenuated Mutant In A Response-Regulator Gene Of Francisella Tularensis Live Vaccine Strain (Lvs), Wendy L. Sammons
Generation And Characterization Of An Attenuated Mutant In A Response-Regulator Gene Of Francisella Tularensis Live Vaccine Strain (Lvs), Wendy L. Sammons
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Francisella tularensis is a zoonotic bacterium that must exist in diverse environments ranging from arthropod vectors to mammalian hosts. To better understand how genes are regulated in these different environments, a transcriptional response- regulator gene (genome locus FTL0552) was deleted in F. tularensis live vaccine strain (LVS). The FTL0552 deletion mutant exhibited slightly reduced rates of extracellular growth but was unable to replicate or survive in mouse macrophages and was avirulent in the mouse model using either BALB/c or C57BL/6 mice. Mice infected with the FTL0552 mutant produced reduced levels of inflammatory cytokines, exhibited reduced histopathology and cleared the bacteria …

Design Of Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors With Nanomaterial Sensing Layers: Application To Chemical And Biosensing, Subramanian K.R.S Sankaranarayanan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors detect chemical and biological species by monitoring the shifts in frequency of surface acoustic waves generated on piezoelectric substrates. Incorporation of nanomaterials having increased surface area as sensing layer have been effective in improving the sensitivity as well as miniaturization of SAW sensors. Selectivity, sensitivity and speed of response are the three primary aspects for any type of sensor. This dissertation focuses on design and development of SAW devices with novel transducer configurations employing nanomaterial sensing layers for enhanced sensing, improved selectivity, and speed of response. The sensing mechanism in these SAW sensors is a …
The Effect Of Thin-Slicing On Structured Interview Decisions, Gregory F. Schmidt
The Effect Of Thin-Slicing On Structured Interview Decisions, Gregory F. Schmidt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examined whether hiring recommendations based on thin slices of a structured interview were associated with recommendations based on the interview in its entirety. After viewing 12 seconds of silent interviewee behavior, participants made hiring recommendations that were significantly correlated with those produced by individuals viewing a still-frame of the interview and the entire interview. In an effort to determine what sources of information participants were using to arrive at their recommendations, nonverbal behaviors were examined in detail. Applicants who appeared attentive, not anxious, competent, confident, dominant, optimistic, and professional were more likely to receive positive hiring recommendations than …
The Communicative Two-Way Pre-Writing Task Performed Via Asynchronous And Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication And Its Influence On The Writing Expertise Development Of Adult English Language Learners: A Mixed Design Study, Iona Sarieva

The Molluscan And Brachiopod Fauna Of The Late Cretaceous Pierre Shale (Baculites Compressus/Baculites Cuneatus Biozones) Near Kremmling, Colorado, Lanora Ann Sava
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Kremmling Paleontological Resource Area (KPRA) contains one of the most fossiliferous units within the Late Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway of North America. It was deposited during the late Campanian Baculites compressus/cuneatus ammonite biozones ((\approx) 72.5 Ma) and records slightly less than one million years of depositional history. Examination of the fauna, its dominant preservational mode and taphonomy as well as the lithologic evidence from measured stratigraphic sections strongly suggests that the depositional environment of the KPRA was a shallow, relatively nearshore environment. A detailed taxonomic examination of the molluscan fauna was undertaken in order to re-evaluate past work as …

The method is also capable of locating all azeotropic phenomena …
Engaging The Eighties: Ethics, Objects, Periods, Kevin L. Ferguson
Engaging The Eighties: Ethics, Objects, Periods, Kevin L. Ferguson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines a recent decade in American history whose unique notion of self-periodization generated important questions of ethical engagement and withdrawal. Situated during a time of an increasingly complex relationship between literature and theory, thinkers in the 80s self-consciously shifted towards making claims about their present moment which were based on the logic of rupture, and which thus created an either-or logic of pessimism or optimism in response to this rupture. These kinds of self-periodizing notions generally are collected under the rubric "postmodernism" and the first chapter deals with a transatlantic movement between theorists such as Fredric Jameson and …

The Preliminary Impact Of 2001 Florida Tort Reform On Nursing Facility Litigation In One County, Deborah K. Hedgecock
The Preliminary Impact Of 2001 Florida Tort Reform On Nursing Facility Litigation In One County, Deborah K. Hedgecock
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since a substantial increase in lawsuits, settlements, jury trial awards, and insurance premiums involving nursing facilities began in the mid 1990s, addressing litigation has been a growing concern for the industry, consumers and their families, insurance carriers, and state and national elected officials. Curbing lawsuit growth has mirrored medical malpractice containment efforts, focusing on the addition of laws to inhibit litigation. The state of Florida initiated such tort reforms along with mandatory increased nursing facility staffing in 2001. Through secondary data analyses, this study examined the initial effects of Florida's tort reform measures. Lawsuits filed (N = 546) against any …

Robot Data And Control Server For Internet-Based Training On Ground Robots, Dmitry Kalyadin
Robot Data And Control Server For Internet-Based Training On Ground Robots, Dmitry Kalyadin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
To facilitate the emerging need for remote robot training and reach back, this thesis describes a system that allows for convenient web browser based robot operation over the Internet, while providing the means for recording and playback of all video, data and user actions. Training of first responder personnel on rescue robots is hindered by the fact that these devices are very expensive and are only affordable by a few specialized organizations that make them available by request at the time of a disaster. The system described in this thesis will allow first responders to practice on the robots without …
Testing Impulsivity As A Moderator Of Smoking Motivation Following Exposure To Negative Affect And Smoking Cues, Erika B. Litvin
Testing Impulsivity As A Moderator Of Smoking Motivation Following Exposure To Negative Affect And Smoking Cues, Erika B. Litvin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Consistent with classical conditioning theories of drug use, previous research has demonstrated that presenting smokers with either exteroceptive (e.g., pictures of cigarettes) or interoceptive (e.g., negative affect) cues results in increased motivation to smoke, as measured by urge and smoking topography (e.g., shorter latency to begin smoking). However, few studies have presented both types of cues to determine whether and how they might interact in the production of smoking motivation, and little research has focused on identifying potential moderators of cue reactivity. In a randomized 2 x 2 crossed factorial between-subjects design, the current study tested whether an interoceptive cue …
Fabrication: Corporate And Governmental Crime In The Apparel Industry, Danielle Mcgurrin
Fabrication: Corporate And Governmental Crime In The Apparel Industry, Danielle Mcgurrin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine both the gendered and racialized nature of workplace risk and compensation in the manufacturing industry of apparel. The author selects this industry because of its low-wage, labor intensive, and "deskilled" work, performed in often unsafe employment environments with minimal governmental regulations and limited unionization. The apparel industry is also characterized by its large percentage of racial and ethnic minorities, especially immigrant employees, that further disadvantage them in terms of communication barriers, threat of deportation, and the multiple and intersecting marginalizations associated with occupying a low-wage, minority and/or immigrant status. The gendered effects …
Forging Identities Through Style: Elite Interaction And Identity Formation At Late Classic (Ad 650-900) Palmarejo, Northwest Honduras, Claire Novotny
Forging Identities Through Style: Elite Interaction And Identity Formation At Late Classic (Ad 650-900) Palmarejo, Northwest Honduras, Claire Novotny
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The representation of social affiliation is dependent upon material signifiers that can serve as communicative links between individuals or communities. This study evaluates the material manifestation of an elite social identity during the Late Classic (AD 650-900) period at the site of Palmarejo, northwest Honduras. Previous studies on social identity in prehistory point to the importance of site plans, monumental architecture, ceramics, and human burials in conveying sociocultural messages. A regional comparison of these types of data is made between Palmarejo and three coeval sites in northwest Honduras, La Sierra, El Coyote, and Las Canoas. I argue that the chosen …
A Surviving Legacy: Nonviolent Resistance In The Congresssional Black Caucus 2001-2007, Rhone Sebastian Fraser
A Surviving Legacy: Nonviolent Resistance In The Congresssional Black Caucus 2001-2007, Rhone Sebastian Fraser
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Select members of the Congressional Black Caucus through their votes, speeches, arrests and nonviolent forms of protest practice a renewed kind of nonviolent resistance against a neoconservative political agenda advanced by the executive branch of the U.S. government in the past six years. Their practices are nonviolent according to the definition of nonviolence discussed by Martin Luther King, Jr. in his 1962 New York Times Magazine article: "we will take direct action against injustice without waiting for other agencies to act...We will try to persuade with our words---but if our words fail we will try to persuade with our acts." …
School Psychologists’ Provision Of School-Based Mental Health Interventions: A Qualitative Study Of Perceived Barriers, Allison A. Friedrich
School Psychologists’ Provision Of School-Based Mental Health Interventions: A Qualitative Study Of Perceived Barriers, Allison A. Friedrich
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to elucidate factors that school psychologists perceive inhibit them from providing more mental health interventions within their professional roles. School psychologists' dual training in mental health and education renders them the logical choice to provide tier II and tier III interventions in schools (National Association of School Psychologists [NASP], 2003). School psychologists appear to be in agreement, as they indicate a desire to spend more time in the provision of roles such as counseling and consultation (e.g., Prout, Alexander, Fletcher, Memis, & Miller, 1993). However, school psychologists currently spend relatively little time in …
Regulation Of Foxo Stability And Activity By Mdm2 E3 Ligase, Wei Fu
Regulation Of Foxo Stability And Activity By Mdm2 E3 Ligase, Wei Fu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Members of the forkhead class O (FOXO) transcription factors are tumor suppressors and key molecules that control aging and lifespan. The stability of mammalian FOXO proteins is controlled by proteasome-mediated degradation but general ubiquitin E3 ligases for FOXO factors remain to be defined. The current studies demonstrate that MDM2 bound to FOXO1 and FOXO3A and promoted their ubiquitination and subsequent degradation, a process apparently dependent on FOXO phopshorylation at PKB sites and on the E3 ligase activity of MDM2. The binding occurred between endogenous proteins and was involved the forkhead box of FOXO1 and the region of MDM2 that controls …
Analysis Of E2f1 Target Genes Involved In Cell Cycle And Apoptosis, Scott N. Freeman
Analysis Of E2f1 Target Genes Involved In Cell Cycle And Apoptosis, Scott N. Freeman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
One of the main results of Rb-E2F pathway disruption is deregulation of the E2F family of transcription factors, which can lead to inappropriate proliferation, oncogenic transformation, or the induction of apoptosis. Given the potential negative biological effects associated with deregulated E2F activity, it is of great importance to study E2F targets that mediate these effects. In Part I of this manuscript, we identify the RhoBTB2 putative tumor suppressor gene as a direct physiological target of the E2F1 transcription factor. We find that RhoBTB2 is highly upregulated during mitosis due in part to E2F1, and that overexpression of RhoBTB2 increases the …
Philosophy Of New Jazz: Reconstructing Adorno, Dustin Bradley Garlitz
Philosophy Of New Jazz: Reconstructing Adorno, Dustin Bradley Garlitz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Theodor W. Adorno, the towering twentieth century German intellectual figure and distinctive musical thinker, was legendary for being over-critical of jazz music. Through a consideration at his admiration for avant-garde chamber and symphonic music, I plan to develop a position that, surprisingly, points towards a theory of unacknowledged acceptance of jazz. The style of jazz that will be the newly constructed musical idiom of admiration for Adorno will be of the heterodox variety. My method of reconstruction will be to interrogate the inconsistencies in Adorno's critical musical writings, and negate such negations with factual evidence of affirmation found in the …
Relationship Between Biofilm Removal And Membrane Performance Using Dunedin Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant As A Case Study, Joshua E. Goldman
Relationship Between Biofilm Removal And Membrane Performance Using Dunedin Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant As A Case Study, Joshua E. Goldman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Membrane biofouling is a common occurrence in water treatment plants that utilize reverse osmosis (RO). As bacteria and biofilm material build up on the membrane surface, it becomes more difficult for clean water to permeate through the membrane, and more pressure is required to produce the same amount of water. When pressures become critically high, membranes must be cleaned. This process is expensive in terms of chemical cost, labor, and downtime. Even after membranes have been cleaned, they can re-foul quickly if the cleaning did not effectively remove the biofilm. The water treatment plant in Dunedin, FL, which uses RO …
Changing The Subject: First-Person Narration In And Out Of The Classroom, Susan Friedman
Changing The Subject: First-Person Narration In And Out Of The Classroom, Susan Friedman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The effectiveness of first-person narration for self-transformation and social change is indicated by exploring connections between three emergent discourses: illness narratives and memoirs by rape survivors in which the subject speaks from a privileged yet socially marginalized position about life-altering experiences; clinical discourse that elaborates treatment methods for empowering trauma survivors and helping them reconnect with the social world; and scholarly discourse that reflects on the relationship between trauma, self-representation, witnessing, and recovery. Post-Foucauldian theories of life-writing illuminate how the author-subjects of survivor narratives discursively reconstruct their shattered subjectivity in a therapeutic relationship with themselves and their readers. Cognitive and …
Transfer Track Versus Workforce Development: Implications For Policy Change In Florida Community Colleges, Karen Griffin
Transfer Track Versus Workforce Development: Implications For Policy Change In Florida Community Colleges, Karen Griffin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Policy-makers intend community colleges to be the primary vehicles for workforce development education and training. In support of this intent, community college mission statements and curricular patterns should clearly indicate a workforce emphasis. Do these statements and curricular patterns reflect policy intent? If not, are resources being directed appropriately? This study was conducted to determine whether the current composition of the overall Florida public community college curriculum and the content of Florida public community college mission and planning statements provided evidence to support Florida leadership policy statements that portray workforce development as a primary component of the community college mission. …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a hepatotoxicant known to elevate alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and other liver enzyme levels, and cause lipid peroxidation, as well as centrilobular necrosis. A number of poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitors were administered via intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections to male ICR mice as cotreatments at various time intervals relative to the CCl4. Aminophylline, a water soluble complex consisting of two molecules of theophylline bridged by ethylene diamine, was administered one-half hour, one hour and two hours after CCl4. The levels of ALT in the serum, as well as malondialdehyde and its equivalent markers of oxidative damage in the …
Evaluation Of Scrap Tire-Derived Porous Rubber Tubing As A Green Membrane For Sustainable Water Filtration (Ecol-Mem Process), Ana Maria Garcia
Evaluation Of Scrap Tire-Derived Porous Rubber Tubing As A Green Membrane For Sustainable Water Filtration (Ecol-Mem Process), Ana Maria Garcia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Increasing population and extensive urbanization have strained resources around the world, promoting water scarcity and solid waste accumulation. Addressing the issues of access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation in developing countries is challenging due to limited technological and financial resources. Therefore, it is imperative that durable, low-cost, and sustainable technologies are developed to help alleviate these problems. At the same time, the production of solid waste has increased and includes waste tires, which pose a health and environmental hazard. Although efforts have been made to develop new markets for recycled scrap tires, a vast majority are still being …
Do You See What I Mean? Measuring Consensus Of Agreement And Understanding Of A National Weather Service Informational Graphic, Lorna M. Geggis
Do You See What I Mean? Measuring Consensus Of Agreement And Understanding Of A National Weather Service Informational Graphic, Lorna M. Geggis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Media use of hurricane graphics to apprise populations vulnerable to severe weather provides a persuasive demonstration of the importance and complexity of visual communication. Surprisingly little research, however, has explored how audiences interpret weather graphics. This study examined whether the general public and the National Weather Service share a common understanding of selected weather related terms and meaning of a NWS informational graphic. Using a coorientation model, general public responses to a questionnaire were compared to definitions prescribed by the NWS. Additionally, the public were asked questions to measure trust of the NWS as a credible and reliable source of …
Forbidding And Enforcing Of Formal Languages, Graphs, And Partially Ordered Sets, Daniela Genova
Forbidding And Enforcing Of Formal Languages, Graphs, And Partially Ordered Sets, Daniela Genova
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Forbidding and enforcing systems (fe-systems) provide a new way of defining classes of structures based on boundary conditions. Forbidding and enforcing systems on formal languages were inspired by molecular reactions and DNA computing. Initially, they were used to define new classes of languages (fe-families) based on forbidden subwords and enforced words. This paper considers a metric on languages and proves that the metric space obtained is homeomorphic to the Cantor space. This work studies Chomsky classes of families as subspaces and shows they are neither closed nor open. The paper investigates the fe-families as subspaces and proves the necessary and …
The Appeal Of The Underdog: Definition Of The Construct And Implications For The Self, Nadav Goldschmied
The Appeal Of The Underdog: Definition Of The Construct And Implications For The Self, Nadav Goldschmied
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
From politics to sports to business, people are quick to categorize those at a considerable competitive disadvantage as "underdogs." Moreover, there is ample support that most unattached observers do not hesitate to align themselves with underdogs, a phenomenon termed "the underdog effect." While most dictionary definitions state that underdogs are "especially expected to lose," the present investigation argues that people often attribute optimistic qualities to underdogs and the exceeding of expectations. A series of studies was conducted to examine the lay-person definition of what an underdog means, as well as what motivations may play a role in the underdog effect. …
Johnson’S System Of Distributions And Microarray Data Analysis, Florence George
Johnson’S System Of Distributions And Microarray Data Analysis, Florence George
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Microarray technology permit us to study the expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously. The technique has a wide range of applications including identification of genes that change their expression in cells due to disease or drug stimuli. The dissertation is addressing statistical methods for the selection of differentially expressed genes in two experimental conditions. We propose two different methods for the selection of differentially expressed genes. The first method is a classical approach, where we consider a common distribution for the summary measure of equally expressed genes. To estimate this common distribution, the Johnson system of distribution is used. …
Transport Characteristics Using Nor- Dihydroguaiaretic Acid (Ndga)- Polymerized Collagen Fibers As A Local Drug Delivery System, Eric Guegan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Dexamethasone and dexamethasone 21-phosphate were loaded into NDGA-polymerized collagen fibers and release rate studies were performed to calculate their diffusion coefficients. Dexamethasone loaded fibers were placed in a PBS solution for specified time intervals (1, 3, 6, 7, 12, 24, 30, and 48 hours) after which the eluant was removed and analyzed by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). CZE is a tool that can be utilized for quantitative analysis of chemical compounds. This data was incorporated into mathematical models to determine the diffusion coefficient. The diffusion coefficient (D) for dexamethasone in NDGA-polymerized collagen fibers is D = 1.86 x 10-14 …
