Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.
Manufacturing Process Design And Control Based On Error Equivalence Methodology, Shaoqiang Chen
Manufacturing Process Design And Control Based On Error Equivalence Methodology, Shaoqiang Chen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Error equivalence concerns the mechanism whereby different error sources result in identical deviation and variation patterns on part features. This could have dual effects on process variation reduction: it significantly increases the complexity of root cause diagnosis in process control, and provides an opportunity to use one error source as based error to compensate the others.
There are fruitful research accomplishments on establishing error equivalence methodology, such as error equivalence modeling, and an error compensating error strategy. However, no work has been done on developing an efficient process design approach by investigating error equivalence. Furthermore, besides the process mean shift, …
The Effects Of Pre-Writing Strategy Training Guided By Computer-Based Procedural Facilitation On Esl Students’ Strategy Use, Writing Quantity, And Writing Quality, Darunee Dujsik
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pre-writing strategies are conscious thoughts, actions, or behaviors used by writers when they plan before writing. Research in second language writing suggests that specific writing strategies related to writing purposes, audience, brainstorming, and organizing ideas are teachable and have a potential to improve the quantity and quality of writing produced by English as second language (ESL) learners. This study investigated the effects of computer-based pre-writing strategy training guided by procedural facilitation (Bereiter & Scardamalia, 1987) on intermediate ESL students' writing strategy use, writing quantity, and writing quality.
A sequential mixed methods design was utilized with an initial quasi-experimental phase followed …

On A Conjecture Involving Fermat's Little Theorem, John Clark
On A Conjecture Involving Fermat's Little Theorem, John Clark
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Using Fermat’s Little Theorem, it can be shown that Σmi=1 i m−1 ≡ −1 (mod m) if m is prime. It has been conjectured that the converse is true as well. Namely, that Σmi=1 i m−1 ≡ −1 (mod m) only if m is prime. We shall present some necessary and sufficient conditions for the conjecture to hold, and we will demonstrate that no counterexample exists for m ≤ 1012 .
High-Rise Neighborhood: Rethinking Community In The Residential Tower, Benjamin Hurlbut
High-Rise Neighborhood: Rethinking Community In The Residential Tower, Benjamin Hurlbut
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Within the United States, a growing sense of detachment exists. Conditions in both urban and suburban contexts have created a sense of social detachment where spaces do not exist which encourage social interaction. Without this social activity, neighbors become almost a disposable commodity as relationships never fully develop. This thesis will be an examination of environments which do and do not foster community relationships and an implementation of community into an urban multi-family residence.
A major part of the problem is the recent move to the suburbs, but urban buildings also exhibit a lack of spaces which help encourage a …
Knitting Of Nature Into An Urban Fabric: A Riverfront Development, Thant Myat
Knitting Of Nature Into An Urban Fabric: A Riverfront Development, Thant Myat
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Tampa River Walk project is one of great importance for revitalization of the waterfront of downtown Tampa. This Riverfront development will be even more important when it becomes a vital example of how a riverfront can stretch and pull together downtown Tampa and its surrounding areas: Hyde Park, Harbour Island, and Historic Ybor. The purpose of this master's project is to explore an ecological ex pansion design approach for the Tampa River Walk as a master plan and then zooming into to an area to design in detail of what the riverfront can be. It will start by concentrating …

Psychometrics Of Osce Standardized Patient Measurements, Frederick R. B Stilson
Psychometrics Of Osce Standardized Patient Measurements, Frederick R. B Stilson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the reliability and validity of scores taken from a series of four task simulations used to evaluate medical students. The four role-play exercises represented two different cases or scripts, yielding two pairs of exercises that are considered alternate forms. The design allowed examining what is essentially the ceiling for reliability and validity of ratings taken in such role plays. A multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix was computed with exercises as methods and competencies (history taking, clinical skills, and communication) as traits. The results within alternate forms (within cases) were then used as a baseline to evaluate the reliability and …

Personal Epistemological Growth In A College Chemistry Laboratory Environment, Linda S. Keen-Rocha
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The nature of this study was to explore changes in beliefs and lay a foundation for focusing on more specific features of reasoning related to personal epistemological and NOS beliefs in light of specific science laboratory instructional pedagogical practices (e.g., pre- and post- laboratory activities, laboratory work) for future research. This research employed a mixed methodology, foregrounding qualitative data. The total population consisted of 56 students enrolled in several sections of a general chemistry laboratory course, with the qualitative analysis focusing on the in-depth interviews. A quantitative NOS and epistemological beliefs measure was administered pre- and post-instruction. These measures were …

Etiological Characterization Of Emergency Department Acute Poisoning, Abdmalek S. Khlifi
Etiological Characterization Of Emergency Department Acute Poisoning, Abdmalek S. Khlifi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Poisoning is frequently associated with psychological and physiological co-morbidities that can be assessed in order to improve patients' management and reduce cost. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a review of emergency department (ED) poisonings to characterize its demographics and assess associated co-morbidities. The second objective is to explore correlation between personal history of diseases and poisonings. Predictors for poisonings and its outcomes were investigated and risk factors for suicidal poisoning and how it relates to mental illnesses were explored. Six hundred and forty nine cases admitted to ED between 2004 and 2007 were studied. Results indicate …
On The Road From Melville To Postmodernism: The Case For Kerouac's Canonization., Jeffrey Warren King
On The Road From Melville To Postmodernism: The Case For Kerouac's Canonization., Jeffrey Warren King
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the publication of On the Road in 1957, Jack Kerouac became a cultural phenomenon. Crowned the "King" of the Beat Generation, Kerouac embodied the restlessness of Cold War-era America. What no one realized at the time, however, was that the movement that he supposedly led went against Kerouac's own beliefs. Rather than rebellion, Kerouac wanted to write in a way that no one had written before. Heavily influenced by, among others, Mark Twain, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Marcel Proust, Herman Melville, and, especially, James Joyce, Kerouac used the influence of his predecessors to formulate his own style of writing-spontaneous prose. The …
Evaluation Of Contraflow Lanes For Hurricane Evacuation, Jason Collins
Evaluation Of Contraflow Lanes For Hurricane Evacuation, Jason Collins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation evaluates contraflow during a hurricane evacuation for grade separated highways. Contraflow is the concept of reversing the typical direction of highway travel to provide more outbound roadway capacity. The State of Florida has spent more time and resources towards the planning and the designing of potential contraflow facilities than any other state in the country; however, contraflow has yet to be implemented (as of Summer 2008). This study determines if the additional capacity benefits of contraflow outweigh the logistical requirements of implementing contraflow. Five different alternatives of contraflow lane configurations were comparatively evaluated. The format of this study …
Analysis Of The Role Of Bhlh/Pas Proteins In Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Signaling, Edward J. Dougherty
Analysis Of The Role Of Bhlh/Pas Proteins In Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Signaling, Edward J. Dougherty
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a basic helix-loop-helix PER/ARNT/SIM (bHLH-PAS) transcription factor that binds ligands typified by 2,3,7,8-tetracholordibenzo-p-dioxin, translocates to the nucleus, dimerizes with the aryl hydrocarbon nuclear translocator (ARNT) and associates with specific cis xenobiotic response elements to activate transcription of genes involved with xenobiotic metabolism. AHR-mediated signal transduction has been evaluated thoroughly in the C57BL/6J mouse model system. This model system, however, may not be the most accurate model for human comparisons as the AHRb-1 allele carried by C57BL/6J contains a point mutation that prematurely truncates the receptor at 805 amino acids, while the AHRb-2 …
Edgar Rice Burroughs' Martian Novels As An Early Paradigm Of Racial Toleration, Ronnie W. Faulkner
Edgar Rice Burroughs' Martian Novels As An Early Paradigm Of Racial Toleration, Ronnie W. Faulkner
Dacus Library Faculty Publications
The Martian novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs (ERB) provide an early paradigm of racial toleration by displacing the heterogeneous race conflicts of the U. S. to an interplanetary location. There, the protagonist John Carter, representing Burroughs himself, introduces a level of racial acceptance and integration almost unheard of on the Earth of that era (the early twentieth century).
Facilitating Communication And Effective Interpersonal Relationships At Work: A Theoretical Model Of Socio-Affective Competence, Adam C. Bandelli
Facilitating Communication And Effective Interpersonal Relationships At Work: A Theoretical Model Of Socio-Affective Competence, Adam C. Bandelli
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The research reported here provides an introduction to a theoretical model of socio-affective competence. This conceptual model of social effectiveness consists of four competencies that are related to the development of effective interpersonal relationships in the workplace. These competencies include: establishing rapport, promoting acceptance of differences, developing trust and cultivating charismatic influence. The socio-affective competence model was formulated in an attempt to integrate research on social and emotional skills that have been linked to performance in organizations. The current research proposed the model and defined its competency areas, designed a socio-affective competence situational judgment test (SAC-SJT), identified the variables that …
The Development And Validation Of The Comprehensive Team Interdependence Scale, Michael E. Rossi
The Development And Validation Of The Comprehensive Team Interdependence Scale, Michael E. Rossi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to review the existing teams research which suggests that teams vary along 4 dimensions of interdependence. Task interdependence is the extent to which the task drives interactions among individuals. Resource interdependence is the extent to which individuals rely on others to provide inputs necessary to complete their portion of work. Reward interdependence is the extent to which individuals' rewards are tied into the performance of others. Finally, goal interdependence is the extent to which individuals set goals and receive feedback at the group versus individual level. A comprehensive team interdependence scale tapping into these …
