Development Of Thin Cshso4 Membrane Electrode Assemblies For Electrolysis And Fuel Cell Applications, Lars E. Ecklund-Mitchell Oct 2008

Development Of Thin Cshso4 Membrane Electrode Assemblies For Electrolysis And Fuel Cell Applications, Lars E. Ecklund-Mitchell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this work the use of the solid acid CsHSO4 as an electrolyte in a hydrogen/oxygen fuel cell or the disassociation of water into hydrogen and oxygen has been investigated. Several issues have been cited in literature regarding the use of CsHSO4 as a solid electrolyte; these include: difficulty interpreting proton conductivity profiles of real membranes, high permeability of the membrane to fuel and product gases, and low mechanical strength. In an attempt to improve our understanding and possibly eliminate these issues, performance characteristics of prepared CsHSO4 membranes have been investigated utilizing various methods of synthesis and …

The Role Of Curcumin In Human Dendritic Cell Maturation And Function, Shawna A. Shirley Oct 2008

The Role Of Curcumin In Human Dendritic Cell Maturation And Function, Shawna A. Shirley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Curcumin is the yellow pigment found in the Indian spice curry. It has anti-inflammatory, ant-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and wound healing properties. It is widely used in industry for its flavor as a spice and as a coloring agent because of its brilliant yellow color. It is also used as a dye for textiles and as an additive to cosmetics. Dendritic cells (DCs) are the sentinels of the immune system and functions as the bridge between the innate and adaptive immune response. The effect of curcumin on DCs is poorly understood. A study shows curcumin prevents the immuno-stimulatory function of …

Ecology And Spirit: Reflections On The Cit Seminar, Richard M. Magee Oct 2008

Ecology And Spirit: Reflections On The Cit Seminar, Richard M. Magee

Presidential Seminar on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition

Professor Magee entered the CIT seminar in May of 2007 with some ideas about spirit and nature in American literature, and now, over a year later, he has, in the best traditions of philosophical enquiry, even more questions about how this complex relationship works. These new questions, however, have led to a significantly deeper and richer understanding of the texts I read, study, and teach, enlarging my intellectual horizons and sharpening my inquiries. His enriched scholarship has taken a number of forms, and in this report, hel briefly presents three specific and important examples.

From Pulp Hero To Superhero: Culture, Race, And Identity In American Popular Culture, 1900-1940, Julian C. Chambliss, William L. Svitavsky Oct 2008

From Pulp Hero To Superhero: Culture, Race, And Identity In American Popular Culture, 1900-1940, Julian C. Chambliss, William L. Svitavsky

Faculty Publications

Adventure characters in the pulp magazines and comic books of the early twentieth century reflected development in the ongoing American fascination with heroic figures. As established figures such as the cowboy became disconnected from everyday experiences of Americans, new popular fantasies emerged, providing readers with essentialist action heroes whose adventures stylized the struggle of the American everyman with a modern, industrialized, heterogeneous world. Popular characters such as Tarzan, Conan, the Shadow, and Doc Savage perpetuated the individualistic archetype Americans associated with the frontier cowboy and the struggles of manifest destiny while offering the fantastic adventure, exoticism, and escapism that modernity …

Resonance Ultrasonic Vibrations And Photoluminescence Mapping For Crack Detection In Crystalline Silicon Wafers And Solar Cells, Andrii Monastyrskyi Oct 2008

Resonance Ultrasonic Vibrations And Photoluminescence Mapping For Crack Detection In Crystalline Silicon Wafers And Solar Cells, Andrii Monastyrskyi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The solar energy, or photovoltaic (PV) industry, driven by economic competition with traditional fossil energy sources, strives to produce solar panels of the highest conversion efficiency and best reliability at the lowest production cost. Solar cells based on crystalline silicon are currently the dominant commercial PV technology by a large margin, and they are likely to remain dominant for at least one decade. The problem of improvement mechanical stability of silicon wafers and finished solar cell is one of the most critical for entire PV industry. Mechanical defects in wafer and cells in the form of periphery or internal cracks …

Two Essays On Financial Condition Of Firms, Sanjay Kudrimoti Sep 2008

Two Essays On Financial Condition Of Firms, Sanjay Kudrimoti

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation includes two related chapters that analyze financial condition of firms. In the first chapter, I examine the relationship between the firms' level of cash holdings and governance. The findings show that higher levels of cash holdings are significantly related to strong governance. The results also show that firms with strong governance hold asymmetrically higher levels of cash than firms with weak governance when they have high growth opportunities. Furthermore, I also test the impact of financial constraint status of the firm on the level of cash holdings for both good and poorly governed firms separately. The results suggest …

The Class Of ’65: Boomers At Sixty Recall Turning Points That Shaped Their Lives A Narrative Approach, Mary C. Poole Sep 2008

The Class Of ’65: Boomers At Sixty Recall Turning Points That Shaped Their Lives A Narrative Approach, Mary C. Poole

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the lives of baby boomers turning sixty as they use narrative to review their past by focusing on turning points. They reflect upon their present, and anticipate their future. The story begins at the St. Pius X High School Class of 1965's fortieth reunion, and proceeds to a class sixtieth birthday celebration and focus group. In addition, five members of the class record their life stories retrospectively. This research explores issues of identity, both personal and generational; the social construction of aging; grief, loss and death; and resilience, meaning, and spirituality. Methods used are autoethnography, narrative, participant …

A Molecular-Dynamics Study Of The Frictional Anisotropy On The 2-Fold Surface Of A D-Alnico Quasicrystalline Approximant, Heather Mcrae Harper Sep 2008

A Molecular-Dynamics Study Of The Frictional Anisotropy On The 2-Fold Surface Of A D-Alnico Quasicrystalline Approximant, Heather Mcrae Harper

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In 2005, Park et al. demonstrated that the 2-fold surface of a d-AlNiCo quasicrystal exhibits an 8-fold frictional anisotropy, as measured by atomic-force microscopy, between the periodic and aperiodic directions [40, 41]. It has been well known that quasicrystals exhibit lower friction than their crystalline counterparts [38, 18, 51, 30, 12, 54]; however, the discovery of the frictional anisotropy allows for a unique opportunity to study the effect of periodicity on friction when chemical composition, oxidation, and wear are no longer variables.

The work presented herein is focused on obtaining an understanding of the mechanisms of friction and the …
