Platforms claim to facilitate sharing and partaking, bring people together, and bestow upon them new and improved spaces to gather and build communities. While reality differs decidedly from such idealized conceptions, it is nonetheless crucial to ask what kind of guiding vision is being instituted through such representational efforts: namely, the figure of community made operational and optimizable. Much of the critical discourse on social media misidentifies its problematic features as bugs, or problems to solve. Supposed solutions to these problems tend to focus on individual actions. We should delete the apps, own our own data, never click on recommended videos, and realize that we are the product. But if predatory algorithms succeed by individuating people—selling people “choice” and “options” as it harvests user data—then an entire online ecosystem arranged through the logic of that design can neither be meaningfully challenged nor effectively understood at the level of the individual alone. This essay examines several prominent memes that have circulated on Right-wing social media during the Covid-19 pandemic. The memes coordinate what I describe as a mode of interpassive humor, which positions those who “believe” in the crisis as naïve dupes, infantilizing those subjects who have fallen prey to the idea that they should take the pandemic seriously, and thereby delegating fearfulness to the other so that reactionary Covid-19 denialists may continue with their lives unaffected. Exploring the development of algorithms in Lacanian theory, specifically the "R schema" in the 1950s, I argue that psychoanalysis, read through contemporary debates about the "algorithmic cult" of Netflix and other avatars of popular culture, can be said to reveal the inhuman, machinic essence of subjectivity. The etiology of algorithms, mathemes, and other formulae and diagrams in Lacan’s oeuvre has been under-studied, in part because for some readers they are not as attractive as his more bravura flourishes of word play as exegetical excess, and in part because they derive largely from the ‘hard’ structuralist moment of his work in …

The focus of this investigation is to analyze the concept of “foreign soundingness” used by David Bellos in his essay “Fictions of the Foreign the Paradox of “Foreign-Soundingness” in the Latino/a music context. Specifically, it is interesting to see how code-switching between English and Spanish in certain songs can be used to connect with the US Latino/a community, but also be a “foreign soundingness” for the audience outside of the mainland. Morrison’s Beloved emphasizes the importance of personal engagement with the history of slavery so as to fully comprehend its horrors and overcome them. On the one hand, colonial-era Bibles represented powerful rhetorical devices for imperialists; on the other hand, Bibles offered a voice of justice that baited hope in marginalized readers. During the U.S. settler colonial movement, Bibles equipped U.S. missionaries with the authority to force assimilation practices, including the extermination of indigenous languages with English-only laws. In Hawai'i, English-only policies functioned to not only dispossess indigenous populations of their native languages, land, and sense of belonging, but they also began a century-plus tradition of monolingualist policy in the U.S. that continues into the present day. Ychsma is one of the lesser-known textile styles of the central coast of Peru that date to the late periods. In this article, fragments of brocaded mantles from an Ychsma grave context, which is dated to the Late Horizon (1476-1532 A.D.) by the presence of an Inca plate, are described and illustrated. The mantles, which are characterized by certain technical features, images, colors and patterns of repetition, are used to identify further examples in museum collections. John Woolman's Aesthetics Of The Stranger, Jay David Miller

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Language about strangers, including ‘the heart of a stranger’ specifically, appears with frequency throughout the writings of John Woolman. This article argues that the stranger, inspired to a great extent by passages from the Bible, was a central philosophical and theological concept around which Woolman’s thought was gathered. For Woolman the stranger also functioned as a literary figure that united various parts of his work in what I refer to comprehensively as an aesthetics of the stranger. Ultimately, Woolman writing about strangers reflected his understanding of Jesus Christ as a stranger, which was the ground from which all his thinking …

Este capítulo estudia el pigmento conocido como azul maya a partir de las fuentes históricas sobre la cultura náhuatl prehispánica, específicamente la Historia universal de las cosas de Nueva España de Bernardino de Sahagún. La obra sahaguntina posibilita la identificación del nombre del azul maya en náhuatl, al mismo tiempo que contribuye a reconstruir su simbolismo en Mesoamérica, en particular, entre los nahuas. Asimismo, el capítulo explica por qué los datos contenidos en la Historia de Sahagún sugieren que el pigmento no era producido en el Valle de México, sino que llegaba ya manufacturado a manos de los artistas nahuas. …

Cuando en 2005 se encontró la Tumba del Sacerdote Lechuza en San José de Moro (SJM), no era la primera vez que se hallaban representaciones de lechuzas entre los objetos arqueológicos recuperados en el sitio y, ni muchos menos, la primera vez que las encontrábamos en el arte mochica o el arte de la región andina en general. Este estudio trata sobre las influencias artísticas, prehispánica y colonial, que han tenido y tienen los bordadores en la creación de los diseños bordados que adornan el vestido tradicional indígena contemporáneo de los pueblos de San Pablo, de Tinta y de Marangani de la provincia de Canchis (Cuzco, Perú). El bordado con máquina (maquinasqa) apareció, posiblemente, en la primera mitad del siglo xx. Las viejas bordadoras de la península de Yucatán, depositarias de la memoria del contenido cultural inscrito en los textiles, desaparecen una a una sin haber trasmitido su conocimiento a las jóvenes generaciones. Ante la alteración de parte sustancial de la cultura vinculada a los textiles, durante cinco años se llevó a cabo una investigación dirigida a salvaguardar este patrimonio en vías de ser olvidado para siempre, la cual demostró el rol de los textiles en los rituales y la relación entre algunos motivos bordados con la cosmogonía maya. Resumen: El Cardenal Flavio Chigi (1631-1693), sobrino del pontífice Alejandro VII (Fabio Chigi), fue un importante coleccionista de arte en la Roma del siglo xvii. Entre sus colecciones, se encontraba el Museo delle curiosità naturali, peregrine e antiche, en donde el cardenal recogió antigüedades, especímenes naturalísticos y objetos de procedencia extraeuropea. El contenido del museo fue registrado, a partir de 1692, en varios inventarios que nos proporcionan una precisa imagen de la colección.
