Sports-related concussions have unique features that distinguish them from those mild traumatic brain injuries (MTBI’s) caused by other mechanisms. Sports-related MTBI’s may result from relatively lower-velocity impacts as compared with high-speed motor vehicle collisions, and are thought to cause different neurophysiologic injury. A survey of youth coaches revealed 42% believed a concussion only occurs when an athlete loses consciousness, and 25% would allow the athlete to return to play despite showing symptoms of concussion. Concussions occur not only in youth sports but also at the collegiate and professional levels. It is believed that, post-concussion, an athlete has diminished reaction time, …

This study of the diagnosis threat involved a detailed review of the background principles, theories, and research established in stereotype threat and diagnosis threat literature. This paper is constructed upon the premise that non-neuropsychological factors can influence behavior within neuropsychological assessment and subsequently impact results. Further detriment can arise when medical professionals errantly view neuropsychological assessments as a direct measure of brain function instead of recognizing their true function as a behavioral assessment. PP2A is protein phosphatase-2A. Inhibition of PP2A (by PP2A inhibitors 1 and 2) results in hyperphosphorylation and accumulation of tau protein. Hyperphosphorylated tau is a major component of neurofibrillary tangles – a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Hence PP2A inhibition represents a putative new approach for a rodent model of AD. The Antarctic region is of particular interest to natural products chemists because it remains relatively unexplored and possesses a wealth of unique biodiversity. Organisms that thrive in this region must produce different chemical defenses to survive in the harsh polar environment, making their secondary metabolites original and potentially useful as drugs for human disease. These compounds often have very complex structures, making their syntheses difficult and impractical. With this knowledge, five Antarctic marine invertebrates were extracted in search of their secondary metabolites. Gender stereotypes can increase the negative perception of female candidates during an election. This can decrease a female politician's chances of running for office and/or being elected to office. When these stereotypes are attached to female candidates, it can cause bias against them which then effects voting behavior among both men and women voters. Many of these stereotypes include looking at the typical personality traits as well as the perception of competency when dealing with social, economic and foreign policy issues. Since 1998 the State of Minnesota has funded the building of the Xcel Energy Center, Target Field, and TCF Bank Stadium. The focus of this research is to locate voting trends within the Minnesota House of Representatives towards these venues. I recorded the votes of each member on the legislation approving these venues from the Minnesota Journal of the House and then constructed data sets for all three buildings. From this data, trends emerge potentially linking the voting tendencies of members based on party, gender, and geographical location of their district. Since September 11, 2001 there has been a significant increase in the number of Muslim international students enrolled in American institutions. In addition, there has been an increase in study abroad programs to predominantly Muslim countries by American students. This essay is devoted to looking back into the life and fiction of Edythe Squier Draper, a twentieth-century writer in Oswego, Kansas. Many of Draper’s stories are set in southeastern Kansas. Through them, we gain a sense of how she attempted—and at times failed—to perceive, articulate, and adapt to her place on the Great Plains. Draper claimed the identity of a rural woman writer by writing herself into narratives of colonial, agricultural settlement, and she both complicated and perpetuated stereotypes of class and race in her fiction. Implications of racial oppression on personal and collective African American identity formation in Toni Morrison’s trilogy are explored in this thesis. Morrison reconstructs African American history in her trilogy, but she also enacts a cultural healing through content and form. Impossible choices are made by characters in Beloved, Jazz, and Paradise who are influenced by the racial trauma they experience and inherit. The legacies of oppression--traumatic memories, fragmentation, stereotypes and negative associations—distort the way these characters view themselves and one another. They are disoriented, isolated, and displaced. Characters recover from their past trauma— together—when they share their stories. …

Explored in this work are three texts: Cormac McCarthy’s novel, The Road; Douglas Coupland’s novel, Girlfriend in a Coma; and Robert Kirkman’s ongoing serialized comic book, The Walking Dead. After a discussion of apocalyptic and postapocalyptic fictions and their ubiquity and popularity in contemporary culture, each work will be analyzed individually to explore each author’s message regarding postapocalyptic concerns. In my dissertation research we used use human wild type α-synuclein gene expression using an adeno-associated viral vector (AAV9) that induced a slowly progressive loss of dopamine (DA) neurons in the Substantia nigra (SN) as one of our animal model of Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is our hypothesis that neuroinflammation predisposes the brain to susceptibility to neurodegenerative diseases. Thus we examined the progression of a PD lesion and examined the manipulations of the immune system to understand further the inflammatory role when we administered exogenous soluble fractalkine.

The specific etiology of neurodegeneration in PD is unknown, but the inflammatory mechanisms …

In 1866 the seat of Manatee County was moved to Pine Level, a newly-formed town in the wilderness of south Florida. By the 1880s, it contained stores, boardinghouses, churches, and government buildings. In 1887, Pine Level became DeSoto County’s first seat. However, when it lost county seat status to Arcadia only 18 months later, in 1888, Pine Level rapidly declined in population and importance, and eventually died out. The investigations of the Pine Level site detailed in this thesis were carried out as a public archaeology project, involving the DeSoto County Historical Society, University of South Florida, and the Florida …

Fortunately, for this generation of students there is a way to combine physical activity and technology through exergaming.
