U.S. Extremism And Media: How The New Age Of Politics Speaks To Media Usage, Josephine R. Haneklau
U.S. Extremism And Media: How The New Age Of Politics Speaks To Media Usage, Josephine R. Haneklau
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
On January 6th, 2021, the nation watched from their television screens as a group of extremists stormed the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. An interesting emotion fell over the U.S. public – it was both shocking and not shocking at all. The attack on the Capitol was a by-product of years of internal division, catapulted by Trump’s presidency. Between racial divisions and the progression of Black Lives Matter, the advancement of COVID and its governmental policies, and Trump’s divisive nature of president at a peak, it seemed almost inevitable that an offense like this would occur.

Hollywood, Hashtags, And Cultural Disharmony: A Comparative Framing Analysis Of How American Newspapers Have Framed The Me Too Movement, Julia M. Fechter
Hollywood, Hashtags, And Cultural Disharmony: A Comparative Framing Analysis Of How American Newspapers Have Framed The Me Too Movement, Julia M. Fechter
Honors College Theses
This project explored how The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the New York Post covered the Me Too movement by studying the frames and framing techniques embedded in the newspapers’ articles. As one of the initial studies to analyze how American newspapers covered the movement, this study investigated how such content might be formative to subsequent narratives published about the Me Too movement. The articles were analyzed using a codebook adapted from Kowalewski (2006). Elements coded included but were not limited to the articles’ political affiliations, article tones, main news angles and main frames in order …

Headline Hawai`I: Racial Aloha In Kama`Aina News, Cory J. Weaver
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The front page of Hawai`i's largest-circulated newspaper - The Honolulu Star-Bulletin - was reviewed for a three-month period: March 1, 2008 - June 1, 2008, to examine representations of race in a media market where Caucasian individuals are the minority. Analysis of the newspaper seeks to present a greater understanding of ethnic portrayals in island news and examines ethical implications that have/can arise from adopting journalistic values typical of "white news" or mainstream reporting practices in areas where the mainstream is, in fact, the minority.

The Daily Show: Journalism's Jester, Mark R. Mccarthy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The social meaning of television news has been under transformation since the successes of cable news in the final years of the previous century. In their attempts to preserve viewership and to remain relevant, traditional broadcast news outlets increasingly emulate the conventions of cable news. Instead of retaining audiences, the result has been declining news content and a continued loss of viewers. Amid these industry transformations, the concept of "journalist" continues to undergo change. This evolution of the news allows for a decidedly unique response to news programming in The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. Though advertised as a half-hour …

Multimedia And Interactive Components In Converged Media, Amanda L. Welch
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A content analysis of news Web sites reveals how many multimedia and interactive components both converged and non-converged media organizations include on their Web presence. The sample included four news Web sites considered to be highly converged with their print and broadcast counterparts (TBO.com, chicagotribune.com, DallasNews.com, and Azcentral.com), one newspaper Web site not affiliated with a broadcast media organization (buffalonews.com), and one broadcast news Web site not affiliated with a print news organization (kfmb.com). A multimedia and interactivity score was given to each Web site based on the quantity of these components each site used. Both kfmb.com (a non-converged organization) …
