On viewing Pensacola for the first time one is at once impressed with the gradual rise of Palafox Street from the waters of the bay northward to the top of an eminence where tall shaft has been erected in memory of the soldiers of the Confederacy. To the southwest of this monument there are still traces of a fort where grim-visaged war was waged more than a century ago. This narrative of that survivor of the ancient Miccosukees gives additional interest to the author’s former notes on Florida Indian names (published here in the issues of April, 1926, and July, 1927) and to those which will appear in coming numbers of the Quarterly.

The history of the negro has been for centuries a history of enslavement. Sir Harry Johnston observed that the negro, “more than any other human type has been marked out by his mental and physical characteristics as the servant of other races.” His dominant characteristics, docility, submissiveness, cheerfulness of disposition and a short memory for sorrows and cruelties have made him largely subordinate to others. “Of this disposition the most aggressive and progressive race has taken advantage and for centuries held the black man in bondage."

An address delivered before the Florida Fruit Growers Association, at Jacksonville, January 20, 1875, by Ex-Chief Justice Charles H. DuPont of the Supreme Court of Florida, and taken from the Proceedings of that meeting. It is now believed that in the history of a people a record of the lives of the people themselves is of greater import than that of those in authority. These letters, written during Dr. Forry’s service in Florida, and relating to the Seminole War, are in the possession of John Wolcott Phelps, of Northfield, Massachusetts, a son of Gen. J. W. Phelps to whom they were written. Samuel Forry, born June 23, 1811, at Berlin, Pennsylvania, received his degree in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and was appointed assistant surgeon, U. S. Army, in 1836, serving until 1840. He wrote: The Climate of the United States and its Endemic Influences, New York, 1842; Meteorology. Uncommonly colorful in its historical background, Ocala, the seat of justice of Marion county, held a position of unique importance among the towns of central Florida in the early days of our statehood. Among the older settlements and so situated geographically that through it must pass the pioneers pressing southward its influence was soon felt, for interwoven with its sturdy agricultural and industrial progress we find the glamour of a social life that left lasting impress upon educational and political activities throughout a large part of the State.

Lieut. John Walcott Phelps (Brig.-Gen., Vols. 1861) of Vermont, served in the Seminole War during 1837, 1838 and 1839. Following these, a score of letters will be published here written by Samuel Forry, Surgeon, U. S. A., to Lieut. Phelps from various forts in Florida during the campaigns of 1837 and 1838. The originals of both series are in the possession of John W. Phelps, of Northfield, Massachusetts, a son of General Phelps; who, through Mrs. Roy V.
