The writer of the above letter was Marcus Cicero Stephens of Newbern, North Carolina. During the early years of territorial Florida, many settlers came to the region from the Carolinas and Virginia, due, partly, to the desire to establish pioneer plantations as speculative ventures and, partly, to the need of expansion to take care of the surplus slave property. Stephens was apparently a member of this group. His family was well connected, as his mother was the niece of Commodore James Barron of the “Chesapeake” fame. To the general reader of Florida history, James Grant is but governor of British East Florida. Had the country remained English for a few more decades, it might well have been that those seven years held the most important service of his long public life; for during that time he laid, in a wilderness, the sound foundation of a typical British colony. But as that beginning came to naught; his governorship is only the midpoint of a military career which began in 1741 as an ensign and carried him to the rank of general in 1796.

The record of El Destino and Chemonie plantations cannot be brought to a close without some account of the changes wrought there by the ravages of the War for Southern Independence, no matter how meager that account has to be. And meager it is. Beyond a few letters, some broken statistical memoranda jotted down by George Noble Jones, and a score or more bits of paper strewn about the El Destino attic, there is nothing. It is with the fullest realization of this circumstance and the resulting limitation of the picture of the plantations that the following narrative is presented.

This essay was awarded a first prize in the Irving Bacheller-Florida Historical Society essay contest for Florida high school students, held at Rollins College under the direction of Alfred J. Hanna, on February twenty-second last. Its author, Donald Jaegar, is a student of Dade City High School. The other prize winners were: Thelma Baker of Orlando, Pyrle Dillingham of Delray Beach, and Laura Belle Fisher of Tampa. These three wrote on The Conquistadores of Florida, 1513-1561.

From the beginning there was wide difference of opinion and sharp controversy in regard to wrecking, the principal occupation of the people of a town which for a time was the largest in Florida. One of the most interesting as well as the most elusive aspects of El Destino life was the mill plant. A few years after George Noble Jones came into possession of his Florida holdings, he undertook to establish his own mills. The facilities for the project were near at hand, for the plantation was heavily wooded and water-power was available from Burnt Mill Creek and the St. Marks River, both of which flowed through his property. In this talk, I will discuss the benefits of pop culture for educators in two distinct but obviously connected ways: (1) how implementing pop culture in classroom curriculum (in both specific and general ways) can engage our students and improve their overall experience and performance and (2) how academic pop culture research and writing paves a path toward teaching excellence (even when the research is not pedagogically driven). This paper adopts the player-focused approach of studying video games to articulate how Final Fantasy VI (FFVI) can be involved in turning the adherents and objectors of Foucault’s discursive approach toward one another in conversation. In the wake of the social and political movements that defined the 1960s, the women’s music movement emerged as a means to cultivate an outlet for young, lesbian musicians who saw themselves as equal to their straight, male counterparts, but were unwilling to compromise their musical integrity in order to perform on major labels. Within this cultural movement were musicians Margie Adam, Meg Christian, Alix Dobkin, Kay Gardner, Holly Near, Linda Tillery, Mary Watkins, and Cris Williamson. While many 1980s youth-oriented films often sold various images of consumption, Over the Edge was one of the early prototypes of the genre, offering a more sober—a more 70s—outlook on youth attempting to find meaning and identity in a corporate-driven, materialistic space called American suburbia. Both a setting for paradise as well as an existential hell for the youth growing up amidst it, the film mobilizes the West and its frontier-like majesty haunting the characters’ space in the planned development of New Granada—a place where families are safe and entrepreneurs can thrive. Vision becomes sound and sound forms a poetic voice displaced— this displacement radiates a mythologized poetic voice serving as a lyrical object, theogonic lyre, and the genealogical muse. The Rhetoric Of Spirituality, Gender, And The Environment In The Wicker Man (1973) And Midsommar (2019), Emma Frances Bloomfield

The Wicker Man (1973) and Midsommar (2019) are horror films that address dominant ideologies including the patriarchy, anthropocentrism, and Christianity. Both films have a nature-connected cult that sacrifices for the community and performs rituals informed by pagan eco-spirituality. I perform an ecofeminist rhetorical criticism to analyze how, despite these shared themes, spiritual, gender, and environmental messages differ between the two films. In The Wicker Man, the audience is invited to sympathize with Neil’s character, his Christianity, and his individualistic masculinity as he is sacrificed in the cult’s harvest ritual. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein recently celebrated its two-hundredth anniversary, and its story remains vibrant in popular culture, especially in the comics medium. I’ve done a number of conference papers in the past devoted to representations of the Creature and his creator, Victor Frankenstein, in comics and comic art, but I’ve only recently begun to look at how the character of the Bride of Frankenstein has been depicted. The territory embraced within the state of Florida was not acquired by the United States through direct purchase from Spain. The treaty ceding this territory was drawn around a claim clause of this country and its citizens against the Spanish government for alleged damages for various reasons. The United States government agreed to cancel its claims and assume the payment of those of its citizens to an amount not exceeding five million dollars, in consideration of which Spain ceded Florida. The transfer of government was accomplished in July, 1821; whereupon General Andrew Jackson became provisional governor.
