The first account of the De Soto expedition to appear in print was the Relecam verdadeira dos trabalhos q ho governador do Fernado de souto e certos fidalgos portugueses passarom no descobrimeto da provincia da Frolida, Agora novamete feita per hu fidalgo de Elvas, which was published in Evora, Portugal in 1557.

This translation was made by Buckingham Smith from a copy in the Archivo de Indias at Seville (rubricated by the secretary Samano). It was published in the appendix of his translation of the Elvas Narrative, the Bradford Club edition (New York, 1866) from which it is reprinted. Florida historians and all who are interested in our history are under great obligation to this Floridian and scholar who made so much of our Spanish colonial history known to us.

Robertson, managing editor of Hispanic American Historical Review and editor of the series of volumes on Florida’s history published by the Florida State Historical Society. These include a facsimile of the first edition of the Elvas Narrative with a new translation of that early classic by Dr. Robertson himself. It admits of no reasonable doubt that the place where Hernando de Soto’s army landed, at the end of May, 1539, was in Tampa Bay. Although I have considered other possibilities carefully I shall not enter upon a discussion of them in the present article. But while there has been almost unanimous agreement on this point, the exact location of the landing place within the bay has given occasion for very sharp differences of opinion for over a hundred years and almost every possible site has been made the basis for someone’s theory. Evidently Delgado uses the word Tawasa much as Calderon does for at least part of the Upper Creeks besides its special application to the town itself. He seems to differentiate between the province of Tawasa (or Tabasa) near the junction of the Coosa and Tallapoosa and the Tukabahchee province which we may assume was around the bend of the Tallapoosa and above.

One of the most important branches of commerce during the American colonial period was the Indian trade. Search of opportunities for barter was a powerful motive in French and British exploration, and the trader was the principal Caucasian emissary with whom the primitive Indian came in contact. After the settlement of South Carolina, Charleston became an important center of the southern trade, a position later shared with Savannah. From these points English traders penetrated to the country of the Cherokees and Creeks and later to that of the Choctaws and Chickasaws, where they successfully competed with the French and Spanish. …

At the time of its cession to the United States in 1821 Florida’s white population was probably about five thousand. There were only two towns, or settlements, of any importance in the territory, and they were near four hundred miles apart. Considering that, with one exception, Florida was the largest territory or State east of the Mississippi river, it can be imagined what an undeveloped country it must have been; remember too that the interior of the peninsula was yet unexplored and its geography unknown.

To date, many studies have exhaustively explained how and why Yan Lianke deals with both the intimate relationship between disease and biopolitics and the relationship between utopia and dystopia. These are certainly the most important themes in Liven (2004) and Dream of Ding Village (2006).
