In the 1820’s Ralph Waldo Emerson was a young Unitarian minister living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As one of six children of a widowed mother in meagre circumstances, his twenty-three years had been a struggle of ambition over privation. His health had never been robust and in the autumn of 1826 he developed a bronchial ailment that demanded a change from the rigors of a New England winter. He was persuaded by family and friends to leave his ministerial duties and, his good uncle Samuel Ripley assisting with travel expenses, on November 25 Emerson sailed in the ship Clematis for Charleston, …

For the history of the short-lived British province of East Florida the main source is undoubtedly the papers in the Public Record Office in London, of which almost all of first importance are available in the form of transcripts or photostats in the Library of Congress. Aside from this, perhaps the best single collection of manuscript material is that in the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. St. Augustine was the chief center of population in colonial Florida. It was not however at any time a town of considerable size. Indeed, the whole white population of East and West Florida in the first Spanish period never exceeded a few thousand at most. The explanation is simple. There were greater attractions elsewhere. Unlike Mexico and the other mainland regions to the south, Florida had no mines to be exploited, no extensive fields already prepared for cultivation, and no Indian serfs to do the white man’s bidding. Few scholars have had such an extensive general understanding of, or such an intensive interest in certain fields of history as had Dr. Robertson. The Philippines, Latin America, Florida, and Maryland all attracted his earnest, enthusiastic, and scholarly attention; and in each of those fields the results of his labors are outstanding. Though honors came to him from four continents, those who knew him best remember the man before the scholar.

The first letters and reports of Major Farmar upon the new province, West Florida, and the conduct of the military administration were received in the early spring by the secretary at war and, in due course, were forwarded to the new governor, George Johnstone, at his London house in Half- Moon street. The papers came from the secretary at war to the office of the secretary of state for the southern department. After inspection, they were returned to the secretary at war.

The Florida Historical Records Survey (Works Progress Administration) is engaged in translating, abstracting, and indexing the manuscripts relative to land claims in East and West Florida in the Field Note Division of the Department of Agriculture at Tallahassee. These manuscripts constitute the archives of the Boards of Commissioners for the settlement of claims based on English and Spanish land grants in the Floridas, which Boards sat at Pensacola from 1822 to 1825 and at St. Augustine from 1823 to 1826. The most detailed of the early reports on the Florida peninsula is that of John Gerard William DeBrahm, Surveyor General of the southern district of North America for George III of England. His observations on Florida are contained in a work entitled “History of the Three Provinces, South Carolina, Georgia and East Florida,” in manuscript in the British Museum, with a copy in Harvard University Library. The South Carolina and Georgia sections of this report have been printed but the Florida material is still only in manuscript. A great benefit would be conferred upon students of Colonial Florida if this …
