As were the others, it is an excellent number, the articles being well chosen for interest and historical value and carefully edited.

By the early spring of 1842 the Second Seminole War was drawing to its close. Since the noteworthy engagement at Lake Okeechobee on December 25, 1837, when the Indians had been defeated and had fled into inaccessible hiding-places, few pitched battles had been fought. Consequently, for several years the troops had engaged in a series of scouting expeditions which were designed to ferret out the numerous small bands of Indians and capture them.

General Henry S. Sanford was a member of the group of Northern business men who during Reconstruction in Florida shrewdly saw economic opportunity in what was then a poor undeveloped frontier state. But entirely different from the carpetbaggers, Sanford came to Florida in 1870 a wealthy man. Purchasing a large former Spanish land grant of 25,000 acres in the central part of the state from General Joseph Finegan for $18,200, he founded the city of Sanford, began construction of a railroad southward and planted extensive orange groves.

Ashley Davis Hurt, first president of the Florida Agricultural College, was a native of Petersburg, Virginia (1834). He was educated at the University of Virginia, the University of Bonn, and received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Berlin. After serving in the Confederate Navy he became principal of the Louisville, Kentucky, high school. In the summer of 1884 he was appointed president of the newly established Florida Agricultural College at Lake City. Later he held the chair of Greek in Tulane University. The success attained by Lieutenant Diego Pena in the discharge of the mission to Apalachee and Apalachicolo, to which he was assigned in the summer of 1716, made him the logical choice for similar duties in the following two years. The authorities in St. Augustine entertained the hope of repopulating Apalachee through inducements offered to surviving Apalacheans then living along the Apalachicolo (present-day Chattahoochee) river and elsewhere, as well as members of adjacent and related tribes, whose disillusionment with the English had produced the then recent Yamassee war. During the first half of the twentieth century more foreign writers visited the South than at any other period in history. Among the various Southern states the most popular among this group of visitors were Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Virginia. In many instances Virginia was a sort of afterthought to the customary visit to Washington, but the other three states attracted foreigners primarily on account of their own colorful history and scenery. Three days before Florida seceded from the Union about 125 state artillerymen marched resolutely on Fort Marion’s Federal garrison as ordered by Governor M. S. Perry. The action which resulted cannot be recorded as one of the major engagements of the war, if we are to believe Private J. Gardner (a member of the expedition), who reminisced: “We took possession of the fort, and captured the entire garrison, consisting of one lonely sergeant, well advanced in years, who surrendered very graciously.“

Compounding this issue is the prominence of literary studies that emphasize the works of renowned authors as products, rather than processes.
