The Aesthetics Of Witheredness And Artistic Creations In The Song Dynasty, Yun Dong
The Aesthetics Of Witheredness And Artistic Creations In The Song Dynasty, Yun Dong
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In the Song dynasty witheredness (ku) came to be the representation of a particular type of beauty, with the withered objects regarded as the object of aesthetic interest. The taste for witheredness manifests in various forms such as cold and thin, sparse and plain, old and strange, epitomizing the ancient-emulating aesthetics of the Song dynasty. Besides literary texts highlighting the withered objects, literati paintings constitute a unique world characterized by witheredness popularized with examples of withered objects such as dead trees, aged plum trees, and thin bamboos. The aesthetics for the withered reflects the taste and spiritual pursuit of the …
Yang Weizhen And The Changes Of Poetics In Late Yuan Dynasty, Fang Ding
Yang Weizhen And The Changes Of Poetics In Late Yuan Dynasty, Fang Ding
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The history of poetry in Yuan dynasty is usually divided into three periods. In the early Yuan period, the poetic style of late Tang dynasty and late Song dynasty was prevalence. In the middle-Yuan period, the high Tang style was emulated, as was represented by the so-called the Four Great Yuan Poets who were officials and served in the court. Yang Weizhen, an influential poet in late Yuan dynasty for his poetics, however, advocated the Six-Dynasty poetry as well as the works of Li Po, Li Ho, Tao Yuanming, Wei Yingwu, Liu Zongyuan, Du fu, Li Shangyin, etc. Yang Weizhen …
Anthologies Of Ancient Chinese Fiction Compiled By Western Sinologists And The Construction Of The Literary Style Of Fiction, Lijuan Song
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Anthologies of ancient Chinese fiction compiled by Western Sinologists are an important channel for their textualization in the West. These fictive works exist mainly in three forms: selected translations of ancient Chinese fiction, selected works of Chinese literature, and histories of Chinese literature. Being translations, samples and selections at the same time, these texts also feature functions of in-betweenness, exhibition and criticism. Through translation, exhibition and criticism, those anthologies have not only textualized ancient Chinese fiction in the West, but also investigate Chinese fiction from Western perspective, which, regarding issues of translation, origin, and types of Chinese fiction, facilitated the …
An Analysis Of Chinese Fiction's Impact On The Joseon Conception Of Fiction, Weiguo Zhao
An Analysis Of Chinese Fiction's Impact On The Joseon Conception Of Fiction, Weiguo Zhao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Based on the literature of Goryeo and Joseon fiction, this article aims to study ancient Korean fictive works written in Chinese, and explores the conception of early Goryeo and Joseon fiction from the lens of its reception of Chinese understanding of fiction. With the wide spread of fictive works such as Taiping Guangji and Jiandeng Xinhua on the Korean Peninsula, Goryeo and Joseon scholars began to understand and consciously create fiction. Then, Seo Geojung and Yi Seungso, who inherited the Confucian conception of fiction, put forward the“jesting theory”and“completing history theory”. These ideas not only laid the foundation for the development …
Narratives Of Journey To The West In Overseas Sinology, Hongbo Zhu, Xinxin Wang
Narratives Of Journey To The West In Overseas Sinology, Hongbo Zhu, Xinxin Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Since the mid-20th century, in Japan, as well as some European and American countries, studies of Journey to the West have started to emerge, which, with rich content and fruitful achievements, are in themselves narratives of overseas Sinology on this novel. Besides being an important part of overseas Sinology, they are also an extension to the modern study of Journey to the West in China, which testifies to the significance of cultural exchange in the process of “Chinese culture going West”. At the same time, through examining and interpreting Journey to the West from the perspective of global and modern …
On Allegory, Metaphor, And Allegorical Interpretation, Longxi Zhang
On Allegory, Metaphor, And Allegorical Interpretation, Longxi Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In the 4th and 5th centuries B.C., the rise of philosophy challenged the authority of Homer and many philosophers, notably Plato, dismissed Homer and poetry in the quarrel between poetry and philosophy. Some other philosophers, however, particularly the Stoics, came to the defence of Homer by proposing the idea of allegory and arguing that the Homeric epics contained a spiritual meaning beyond the literal sense of the text. Similarly, the Song of Songs in the Bible was also questioned by both Jewish rabbis and Christian interpreters because of its sensual language and eroticism. It was again allegorical interpretation that came …

Series 1: Family - Quotes
In this section, we have selected quotes that represent how Black residents in Maine view their family life. The quotes are taken from transcripts of the oral history project “Home Is Where I Make It”: African American Community and Activism in Greater Portland, Maine.” The interview subjects are all native to Maine or are longtime residents of Maine. The original intent of the “Home Is Where I Make It” project was to highlight Black residents’ history and struggle for community in southern Maine in both their formal organizational memberships and day-to-day activities. The interviews, however, unearthed a wealth …

Letters Of A Teenage Confederate, Henry Eugene Sterkx
Letters Of A Teenage Confederate, Henry Eugene Sterkx
Florida Historical Quarterly
The history of the Civil War is replete with many young men who patriotically went off to war hoping to make great contributions to their side. Some did not get a chance to prove themselves in battle. Many spent all of their time in camp where some became victims of disease rather than the enemy’s bullets. Thus it was with Langdon Leslie Rumph.

Documents Pertaining To The Georgia-Florida Frontier, 1791-1793, Richard K. Murdoch
Florida Historical Quarterly
During the period from 1784 to 1821, one of the major causes of friction along the St. Marys River, the dividing line between the United States and East Florida, was the frequent disappearance of Negro slaves, usually fleeing from the American bank of the river into the sparsely populated Spanish colony where they hoped to find a refuge with the Indian population or among the freed Negroes and mulattoes in St. Augustine. Frequent arrangements were made by the authorities on both sides to return the runaways as soon as possible to their legitimate owners to avoid unnecessary diplomatic wrangling.
The Journal Of A. B. Meek And The Second Seminole War, 1836, John K. Mahon
The Journal Of A. B. Meek And The Second Seminole War, 1836, John K. Mahon
Florida Historical Quarterly
Alexander Beaufort Meek was born in Columbia, South Carolina, March 17, 1814, the son of a methodist minister. While he was still young his parents migrated to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, taking him with them. Although inclined to be indolent, learning came easily to the boy. Proof of this is that at a tender age he memorized the entire Old Testament. At age nineteen he was graduated from the University of Alabama (1833), and at twenty-two was awarded a master’s degree from the same school. Meanwhile, in 1835 he had begun the practice of law in Tuscaloosa.
The Episcopal Church In Florida During The Civil War, Joseph D. Cushman, Jr.
The Episcopal Church In Florida During The Civil War, Joseph D. Cushman, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
As the Civil War approached, the Episcopal Church in Flor- ida found herself for the first time since the opening of the territory in a position of stability. She had weathered the hardships and uncertainties of the territorial period; her older parishes had become self-supporting congregations, and were embarking on vigorous parochial and educational projects; and a new group of lively missions was springing up in towns like Fernandina, Ocala, and Palatka, and in agricultural villages like Waukeena and Milton. The Diocese of Florida, which had been bishopless for thirteen years after its organization in 1838, had enjoyed the episcopal …
Sixteenth Century English-Spanish Rivalry In La Florida, Leitch Wright, Jr.
Sixteenth Century English-Spanish Rivalry In La Florida, Leitch Wright, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
For many years after its discovery la Florida was a vague geographical concept. Discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1513, it was first considered an island, though later recognized to be a diminutive tail wagging an immense dog. During much of the sixteenth century it embraced a large part of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and stretched mysteriously inland an infinite way. Ponce de Leon was followed by numerous other conquistadors such as Vazquez de Ayllon, Panfilio de Narvaez, Hernando de Soto, and Tristan de Luna y Arrellano, but they garnered little gold or silver and endured many privations, shipwrecks, …

Governor Folch And The Burr Conspiracy, Adam Szaszdi
Governor Folch And The Burr Conspiracy, Adam Szaszdi
Florida Historical Quarterly
The strange episode of American history, the Burr conspiracy, can be considered nowadays a well-known story, and the more so since the publication of Professor Abernethy’s work, The Burr Conspiracy (1954). However, even though pertinent Spanish documents have been taken into consideration, the usual tendency is to view the subject from the perspective of those operating within the United States. Therefore, it should be an interesting experiment to cross the Florida boundary and place ourselves in the shoes of the Spanish authorities of that time.
Suggestions For Research In The Culture And Society Of A Spanish Florida, William B. Griffen
Suggestions For Research In The Culture And Society Of A Spanish Florida, William B. Griffen
Florida Historical Quarterly
Florida was established as a functional part of the Spanish colonies in 1565. Saint Augustine was from the beginning the focal point of the Spanish Empire in Florida from which the social and cultural influences of the Iberian civilizers were radiated into the hinterland, transforming to some degree both the physical environment and the human groups bearing different ways of life which were encountered. But, not only from the standpoint of Spanish-Indian culture contact and acculturation does early Florida hold interest for the anthropologist. The imported European culture is also of tremendous importance to be understood in the development of …

The Irish Brigade Of Spain At The Campture Of Pensacola, 1781, W. S. Murphy
Florida Historical Quarterly
The capture of Pensacola by Bernardo de Galvez, in May, 1781, five months before the British surrender at Yorktown constituted the only exciting military exploit of Spain during the American Revolution. It was an interesting Spanish contribution to the fortunate outcome of the war. The Spanish victory in Pensacola required the services of 6,500 Spanish troops, a sizeable Spanish naval ancillary, and the aid of 725 French soldiers with their own ships. This force included a substantial representation from the Irish Brigade of Spain, one of the most celebrated corps of the Spanish army. This article will sketch the unfolding …
