This letter is in continuation of the series of documents, survivals of the records of Panton, Leslie & Co. and its successor John Forbes & Co., preserved by the family of John Innerarity, last surviving partner of the latter firm, the publication of which was begun in a late issue of the QUARTERLY. They are in the possession of Mrs. John W. Greenslade, of Washington, D. C., who has transcribed them. This series will be continued in the following issues.

The visit of Sir John Hawkins to the struggling and disheartened French colonists near the mouth of what is now the St. Johns River is one of the most interesting episodes of that age of gallantry and adventure. It illustrates extreme courtesy and generosity under circumstances when ruthlessness would have been expected ; thus we see why every school-boy instinctively admires the freebooting pirate. Besides, the consequences of that short stay were felt in a revitalized curiosity regarding the new world.

The Creek nation with its lands situated in regions claimed both by Spain and the United States occupied a strategic position at the close of the War of the American Revolution. Since no treaty existed between the two countries the question of boundaries was left entirely for future determination. The Spaniards desired to extend the limits of the Floridas as far northward as possible; while the Americans wished to establish the boundary near the Gulf as specified in the treaty with Great Britain.

In the preceding issues of the QUARTERLY, starting with July, 1930, we followed the career of a detachment of United States regulars during their occupancy of Spanish East Florida beginning March 18, 1812, as told by their commander, Col. Thomas A. Smith, in his official and semi-official correspondence, much of which has never appeared in print before. The last issue brought the story to the time when Col. For a limited period and to a limited extent negro slavery existed in the Florida peninsula under the early Spanish regime. From at least as early as 1726 the Spaniards welcomed fugitive slaves from Georgia and South Carolina. So also did the lower Creek Indians, who treated them well, admitted them to their free life, and intermarried with them. For the next dozen years the fugitives were sold in St. Augustine, although their liberation was ordered by a royal decree of October 29, 1733. When claimants or their agents came from the neighboring colonies to recover their slaves, they got …

In connection with the annual meeting of the Society there were held the finals in an essay contest on certain subjects of Florida’s history open to all Florida high school students, for prizes offered by Mr. Irving Bacheller and the Society. Miss Bellamy, of the Orlando High School, won the first prize for girls with the essay above. The first prize for boys went to James Erwin of the St. Augustine High School, who wrote also on Menendez. When the Floridas became English territory, in 1763, there was the characteristic effort to reproduce in the new province whatever the mother country deemed essential. In less than a year Anglican missionaries were on the ground; and we find a record of nine clergymen “licensed to the plantations by the Bishops of London from the year 1745 inclusive”.

No subject within the wide range of Florida’s history has stirred a greater interest than St. Joseph. Because of its quick rise to importance, its still more rapid decline, and the double tragedy of its extinction, an aspect of romance has settled upon the dead town, heightened through tradition and a haze of unreality engendered by the lack of definite records of its life. Dr. Knauss, searching out and bringing together these scanty records, gives us a light, for the first time, to penetrate that mist.

In the museum of the Florida Historical Society, at 7 West Forsyth Street, Jacksonville, there is an old bell of Spanish origin which is one of the very few existing relics of the missions established by the Roman Catholic church in colonial days throughout the territory now embraced by the State of Florida. The bell was cast of an alloy of tin, copper, and silver; it is eighteen inches in height, measures four feet around the base, and bears the inscription SANTA MARIA ORA PROBONIS, with the date ANO 1758, and a raised cross composed of twenty-four eight-pointed stars.
