Constructions Of Narrative Identities Of Women Political Candidates, Amy E. Daniels Mar 2009

Constructions Of Narrative Identities Of Women Political Candidates, Amy E. Daniels

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I evaluate the ways in which newspaper articles constructed the gendered cultural and personal narratives of a woman Presidential and a woman Vice-Presidential candidate during the 2008 Presidential Election season. Drawing upon West and Zimmerman's "Doing Gender" (1987) that explains gender is performed constantly throughout life, I assess the stories told about each candidate and the way she performed gender. There are two different types of stories created. The first is a personal narrative which tells the story of each individual candidate, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. The second is a cultural narrative which tells the story of a dis-embodied …

The Quasi-Uniformity Condition And Three-Dimensional Geometry Representation As It Applies To The Reproducing Kernel Element Method, Nathaniel O. Collier

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Reproducing Kernel Element Method (RKEM) is a hybrid between finite elements and meshfree methods that provides shape functions of arbitrary order and continuity yet retains the Kronecker-delta property. To achieve these properties, the underlying mesh must meet certain regularity constraints, unique to RKEM. The aim of this dissertation is to develop a precise definition of these constraints, and a general algorithm for assessing a mesh is developed. This check is a critical step in the use of RKEM in any application.

The general checking algorithm is made more specific to apply to two-dimensional triangular meshes with circular supports and …

Are All Good Soldiers Created Equal? Examining The "Why" That Underlies Organizational Citizenship Behavior: The Development Of An Ocb Motives Scale, Anna Lissa Tolentino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally, organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) have been conceptualized within a social exchange framework, implying that individuals perform citizenship behaviors in response to fair treatment by the organization (Zellars & Tepper, 2003). In accordance with this social exchange framework, researchers have identified a number of OCB antecedents, like perceived organizational support (Moorman, Blakely, & Niehoff, 1998; Settoon, Bennet, & Liden, 1996), job satisfaction, organizational commitment, organizational justice (LePine, Erez, & Johnson, 2002; Organ & Ryan, 1995), and leader-member exchange (Connell, 2005; Settoon, Bennett, & Liden, 1996; Wayne & Greene, 1993). Recently, however, research has shifted from viewing OCB as a reactionary …

In addition, ortho-planar MEMS with large output forces and long strokes could be used to develop new applications such as tactile displays, active Braille, and actuation of micro-mirrors. In order to analyze the kinematics and elasticity of a curved …

Analysis Of Single Fiber Pushout Test Of Fiber Reinforced Composite With A Nonhomogeneous Interphase, Sri Harsha Garapati Mar 2009

Analysis Of Single Fiber Pushout Test Of Fiber Reinforced Composite With A Nonhomogeneous Interphase, Sri Harsha Garapati

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fiber pushout test models are developed for a fiber-matrix-composite with a nonhomogeneous interphase. Using design of experiments, the effects of geometry, loading and material parameters on critical parameters of the pushout test such as the load-displacement curve and maximum interfacial shear and normal stresses are studied. The sensitivity analysis shows that initial load displacement curve is dependent only on the indenter type and not on parameters such as fiber volume fraction, interphase type, thickness of interphase, and boundary conditions. In contrast, interfacial shear stresses are not sensitive to indenter type, while the interfacial radial stresses are mainly sensitive to fiber …

Framework For Self Sustaining Eco-Village, Eric Holtgard Mar 2009

Framework For Self Sustaining Eco-Village, Eric Holtgard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Why are modern American cities fundamentally dependant on outsourced resources and dirty power? Why can't modern cities support themselves and their inhabitants without relying on resources from half way across the world? Even within the city itself, community neighborhoods are disconnected and bisected by massive expanses of life endangering highways. Why can't we wake up and open our eyes to the urban reality we are creating for future generations. Future cities must look past immediate gain and focus on long term sustainability rather than compiling L.E.E.D. points or making a selfish profit.

Sustainable Infrastructure is the first step towards freeing …

Employee Commitment: The Combined Effects Of Bases And Foci, Meng Uoy Taing Mar 2009

Employee Commitment: The Combined Effects Of Bases And Foci, Meng Uoy Taing

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies indicate that employees distinguish between commitments to interpersonal foci within the organization, such as supervisors and coworkers. Often, these commitments account for variance in outcomes incremental to organizational commitment (e.g., Becker, 1992). Unfortunately, research has tended to focus on affective forms of commitment to foci, while ignoring normative and continuance commitment. To address this gap, the current study proposed and tested models of commitment to foci which incorporate normative and continuance commitment in addition to affective commitment. Results showed some parallels with findings concerning organizational commitment. Much like organizational commitment, support from a focus relates to affective commitment …

Techniques For Vlsi Circuit Optimization Considering Process Variations, Mahalingam Venkataraman Mar 2009

Techniques For Vlsi Circuit Optimization Considering Process Variations, Mahalingam Venkataraman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Technology scaling has increased the transistor's susceptibility to process variations in nanometer very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuits. The effects of such variations are having a huge impact on performance and hence the timing yield of the integrated circuits. The circuit optimization objectives namely power, area, and delay are highly correlated and conflicting in nature. The inception of variations in process parameters have made their relationship intricate and more difficult to optimize. Traditional deterministic methods ignoring variation effects negatively impacts timing yield. A pessimistic worst case consideration of variations, on the other hand, can lead to severe over design. In …

Semantic And Phonological Priming Effects On N400 Activation In People Who Stutter, Jessica Lauren Huffman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

To date, research on mechanistic aspects of fluency disorders has focused heavily on motor contributions to stuttering. Only recently have researchers begun to explore psycholinguistic contributions to stuttering. Psycholinguistic planning for speech heavily involves the activation and processing of lexical information. We used a neuroscience approach to compare word activation in mental lexicon while completing a picture naming task in people who stutter (PWS) versus fluent individuals (PWNS).

Twenty-eight individuals ranging in age from 19 - 52 years old participated in a picture-word priming task adopted from Jescheniak et al. (2002). Electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded while participants saw black and …

Effects Of Diluent Addition And Metal Support Interactions In Heterogeneous Catalysis: Sic/Vpo Catalysts For Maleic Anhydride Production And Co/Silica Supported Catalysts For Fts, Ala'a Hamed Kababji

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work begins with an introduction to catalysis focusing on heterogeneous systems and surface science phenomena. A study on the partial oxidation reaction of n-butane to maleic anhydride (MA) is presented in the first part. MA supplies are barely adequate for market requirements due to continued strong demand. Only slight improvement in catalytic performance would be welcome in the industrial community. The vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalyst was used in this work. The reaction is highly exothermic and the need to properly support the catalyst, not only for good dispersion but adequate heat dissipation is of crucial importance. For this, …

Using 34-S As A Tracer Of Dissolved Sulfur Species From Springs To Cave Sulfate Deposits In The Cerna Valley, Romania, Jonathan Sumrall

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Baile Herculane, located in southwestern Romania, is a unique city that exploits its thermal waters. The geology consists of a granitic basement covered by 200 meters of limestone, marl, and flysch deposits. Extreme faulting carries heat ascending from the mantle, which intercepts percolating meteoric waters. Local springs have high concentrations of dissolved sulfide gas (H2S) and dissolved sulfate (SO4²-).These dissolved species indicate the progression of sulfate reduction in the aquifer.

Water samples were collected in polyethylene syringes to prevent oxidation of sulfide. Then, sulfide and sulfate were quantitatively reacted for stable isotope analysis. Total …

The Participation Of Ngos In Healthcare: The Case Of Pediatric Cancer Treatment In Argentina, Cecilia Vindrola Padros Mar 2009

The Participation Of Ngos In Healthcare: The Case Of Pediatric Cancer Treatment In Argentina, Cecilia Vindrola Padros

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The deterioration of the Argentine public health system has lead to an increase in non-governmental involvement in the provision of health services. The emerging relationship between these sectors is filled with tensions, contradictions, and negotiations, reflecting the historical trajectory of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the transformations of the public health system. These problems are specifically evident in programs that focus on pediatric oncology treatment due to the fact that ideas about childhood, chronic disease, and mortality construct an unusual collaborative framework between governmental and non-governmental healthcare professionals. Pediatric cancer contradicts traditional notions of childhood; it points out the ambivalences associated …

Developing Feminist Activist Pedagogy: A Case Study Approach In The Women's Studies Department At The University Of South Florida, Stacy Tessier

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I examine the relationship between activism and the two introductory-level Women's Studies classes, Introduction to Women's Studies and Issues in Feminism, and the social justice mission of the Women's Studies department. These two classes are the pillars for the program and are often the first classes that draw students into the program. I propose that the Women's Studies department does promote social justice through the curriculum and there are ways that the department could do more to facilitate activism in the classroom and beyond the classroom.

The Women's Studies department at the University of South Florida is …
