Roethke’S "Meditations Of An Old Woman": A Myth And Ritual For Dying, Christopher K. Bennett Dec 1980

Roethke’S "Meditations Of An Old Woman": A Myth And Ritual For Dying, Christopher K. Bennett

Masters Theses

In "Meditations of an Old Woman," Theodore Roethke poetically encountered death, speaking through the persona of an old woman approaching the end of life. The pattern she follows, wandering through her memory in search of the maiden she once was, is also found in the myth of Demeter and Persephone, which was ritualized in the Eleusinian Mysteries of ancient Greece. The poem, myth, and ritual taken together reflect a single archetypal pattern for approaching death; comparing them will reveal the essence of each. Through recollection, the old woman finally unites with her lost youthful self in an epiphany similar to …

The George C. Davis Site, Cherokee County, Texas: Spring 1980 Archeological Investigations, Ross C. Fields, J. Peter Thurmond

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The results of archeological investigations in portions of the George C. Davis Site are presented in this report prepared by Ross Fields and J. Peter Thurmond . Stringent contract requirements and the provisions of Texas Antiquities Permit No. 237 dictate that this report be brief and descriptive in nature. Requirements such as inclusion of a detailed site investigation history and environmental data were excluded and extensive excavations were stressed in preference to detailed analyses and comparisons. Field investigations were limited by contract to 20 working days and the analysis/write-up to 10 working days. The governing research design was prepared by …

Roy Crane—Pioneer Adventure Strip Cartoonist, Ray Thompson Apr 1980

Roy Crane—Pioneer Adventure Strip Cartoonist, Ray Thompson

The Courier

The newspaper comic strip was well established in the United States by World War I. It had become a part of every American's cultural background long before the Disney cartoon films of the 1930s. The George Arents Research Library for Special Collections at Syracuse University has a large collection of original drawings for comic strips. There are cartoons from the early days of the comic strip to the work of artists still drawing strips which many Americans read every day.

Some of the comic strips have extraordinary lives, continuing past their creator's lifetimes. Buzz Sawyer and his friend Roscoe Sweeney …

The Letters Of Charlotte Browning Page, Donna Burns Apr 1980

The Letters Of Charlotte Browning Page, Donna Burns

The Courier

Charlotte Page was not eminent in state or national life and politics, but for that very reason her papers are an important primary source. The focus of history traditionally centers on prominent people in society: monarchs, presidents, and statesmen. Recently some historians have shifted their interest to obscure individuals: the peasant, the housewife, and the factory-worker. We can gain an intimate view of history by considering Charlotte Page, an ordinary schoolmistress whose collected letters span five decades, from 1878 to 1941. Charlotte's letters provide excellent written records from which to see her as an individual and to study the society …

What Killed Mcmurphy, Roger A. Lohmann Mar 1980

What Killed Mcmurphy, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Despite the generally optimistic and hopeful tone of organizational goals and public policy, the general record of residential treatment institutions, or asylums, and of efforts to reform them have been equally unsuccessful. In this paper, it is argued that the lack of success in basic institutional reform over much of the past two centuries is, itself, a part of the tragic cycle of institutionalization. A principle factor in the failure of reforms (the tragic flaw, as it were) is the naive rationalism, which forms the psychological and sociological basis of the dominant model of institutional life used by institutional officials …
