The Role Of Pkcδii In Insulin-Mediated Neurogenesis, Mishka Peart Apr 2011

The Role Of Pkcδii In Insulin-Mediated Neurogenesis, Mishka Peart

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Protein Kinase C delta (PKCδ) is a Serine/Threonine signaling kinase involved in a number of different cellular functions including cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. PKCδ improves learning and memory by preventing neuronal loss and maintaining the synapses. Data from our lab demonstrates that insulin regulates the alternative splicing of PKCδ pre-mRNA and promotes the expression of PKCδII, the splice variant that promotes neuronal survival. PKCδI, another splice variant of PKCδ, causes apoptosis of neurons. Our preliminary data and previous studies demonstrate that intranasal insulin improves cognitive ability in mice. The goal is now to determine the downstream components through which …

The Pronoun Problem: Possible Changes In The Use Of Epicene Pronouns, Morgan Dean, Brittany Norton Apr 2011

The Pronoun Problem: Possible Changes In The Use Of Epicene Pronouns, Morgan Dean, Brittany Norton

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

This study explores the possible bias of gender in the English language and was designed to replicate and extend Noll (1999). We assessed reaction times to lexical decision tasks (i.e., deciding whether a letter string forms a word) following sentences containing supposedly epicene (gender neutral) pronouns "he" and singular "they." We asked whether both feminine and masculine words would be equally accessible following sentences utilizing the epicene "he" and singular "they." Participants ( N=208) were presented with a series of opinion statements and indicated whether they agreed or disagreed. At various points within the sentences, the participants completed the …

“Natural Disaster Plans And How They Need To Be Fixed”, Christopher Poitevien Apr 2011

“Natural Disaster Plans And How They Need To Be Fixed”, Christopher Poitevien

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Natural disasters have affected our history, affect our present, and will affect our future. Because of this our world needs to adapt. But disaster plans already established should include certain aspects that would limit the amount of damage inflicted by the disaster and the number of lives that are lost. The problem with the literature is that it does not cover what should be done to decrease the number of lives lost and limit the damage that could occur. The first thing that it needs is disaster epidemiologists. These are scientists that go back into the history of the area …

Exhibition Of A Rhinoceros: Iconography And Collecting In Eighteenth Century Venice, Alexa Torchynowycz Apr 2011

Exhibition Of A Rhinoceros: Iconography And Collecting In Eighteenth Century Venice, Alexa Torchynowycz

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

This paper examines the painting titled The Exhibition of a Rhinoceros (1751) by the Venetian artist Pietro Longhi and its context within the art patronage of the Venetian patrician Giovanni Grimani ai Servi. Study of the decline of Venice‟s political power during the eighteenth century, the lineage of rhinoceros imagery begun by the famous Renaissance German artist, Albrecht Dürer, and Italian collecting practices of naturalia influenced by the sixteenth century natural scientist, Ulisse Aldrovandi, were factors in the development of the thesis. Previously, many art historians have interpreted The Exhibition of a Rhinoceros as representing the "spectacle" of Venetian Carnival. …

Alzheimer’S Disease And Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Review Of Etiology, Clinical Diagnosis, And The Involvement Of Dendritic Spines, Stephen Aradi

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting a range of cognitive faculties, for which there is currently no treatment, save for ameliorative strategies. This disease primarily affects the elderly, and is the leading cause of dementia among this group. Out of an estimated 5.4 million Americans with AD this year, 5.2 million are over the age of 65. With the amount of people aged 65 and older increasing as the Baby Boomer generation ages, AD will become an increasingly dire burden. As we face this growing issue, research into both its causes and more sensitive and accurate diagnostic …

Crafting Character Through Emotion And Reason, Aliene Dalton Apr 2011

Crafting Character Through Emotion And Reason, Aliene Dalton

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

This thesis follows a reproduction of Aristotle's The Art of Rhetoric in hopes of assisting undergraduate students of Creative Writing majors. Its model will cast types and utility of reasoning alongside respective emotions in an episodic debate under the same methodology of Aristotle, enthymeme1 and example2, and the emotions of Aristotle's study will be organized by the system of reason they produce, practical, imperfect, or perfect. I have selected this method for, although Aristotle's work studies the various elements which constitute components of emotion, his work is without a cyclic theory of emotions' interconnection.

The advantage of reproducing Aristotle's rhetoric …

Anatomy Of The Concussion: More Serious Than Meets The Eye?, Chelsea Frost Apr 2011

Anatomy Of The Concussion: More Serious Than Meets The Eye?, Chelsea Frost

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Sports-related concussions have unique features that distinguish them from those mild traumatic brain injuries (MTBI’s) caused by other mechanisms. Sports-related MTBI’s may result from relatively lower-velocity impacts as compared with high-speed motor vehicle collisions, and are thought to cause different neurophysiologic injury. A survey of youth coaches revealed 42% believed a concussion only occurs when an athlete loses consciousness, and 25% would allow the athlete to return to play despite showing symptoms of concussion. Concussions occur not only in youth sports but also at the collegiate and professional levels. It is believed that, post-concussion, an athlete has diminished reaction time, …

Cognitive Performance And Diagnosis Threat, Robert D. Salazar Apr 2011

Cognitive Performance And Diagnosis Threat, Robert D. Salazar

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

This study of the diagnosis threat involved a detailed review of the background principles, theories, and research established in stereotype threat and diagnosis threat literature. This paper is constructed upon the premise that non-neuropsychological factors can influence behavior within neuropsychological assessment and subsequently impact results. Further detriment can arise when medical professionals errantly view neuropsychological assessments as a direct measure of brain function instead of recognizing their true function as a behavioral assessment. The main goal of this paper is to highlight how non-neuropsychological factors, primarily the diagnosis threat, can affect neuropsychological assessment and attempt to provide an alternative explanation …

Dendritic Alterations In A Tauopathy Rat Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease Using Pp2a Inhibition, Sean Verma, Khalid Iqbal, Ronald F. Mervis Apr 2011

Dendritic Alterations In A Tauopathy Rat Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease Using Pp2a Inhibition, Sean Verma, Khalid Iqbal, Ronald F. Mervis

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

PP2A is protein phosphatase-2A. Inhibition of PP2A (by PP2A inhibitors 1 and 2) results in hyperphosphorylation and accumulation of tau protein. Hyperphosphorylated tau is a major component of neurofibrillary tangles – a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Hence PP2A inhibition represents a putative new approach for a rodent model of AD. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of PP2A inhibition on dendritic branching in cortical pyramids in rats that wereinjected ICV with an adeno- associated virus for expression of: (1) Inhibitor 1 full length (I1 FL) (2) Inhibitor 2 full length (I2 FL) (3) Inhibitor …
