William Augustus Bowles accompanied by William Cunningham and a band of Indians made up of Cowitas, Broken Arrows, Hitchetas, Ufales, Chichas, and Ousutches captured the Apalachee trading post of Panton, Leslie and Company on the 16th day of January 1792. This event was one of the most important incidents in the commercial warfare waged by the merchants of New Providence against the house of Panton.

These letters are a part of the series of documents, survivals of the records of Panton, Leslie and Company and its successor, John Forbes and Company, the publication of which was begun in a late issue of the QUARTERLY. The originals are in the possession of Mrs. John W. Greenslade, a greatgranddaughter of John Innerarity, who has transcribed them. The series will be continued in the following issues.

When the Spaniards evacuated St. Augustine in 1763 and 1764 they took with them to Havana all the altars, images, vestments, canopies, cushions, bells, and even the wax tapers of their churches, religious brotherhoods, and the Franciscan convent. All this sacred paraphernalia was in charge of the warden of the parish church, Simon de Hita, and was transported to its destination in the schooner Our Lady of Light, which cast anchor in the harbor of Havana about February 1, 1764

This biographical sketch has been prepared mainly from letters and other documents now in the possession of the author and Mrs. Heloise H. Cruzat, of New Orleans, both descendants of John Innerarity. Those papers are survivals of the records of Panton, Leslie & Co. and its successor, John Forbes & Co., which have been preserved by John Innerarity and his family. Selections from them will appear continuously in many issues of the QUARTERLY. This journal is a record of a journey made by John Innerarity, a partner in the firm of John Forbes & Co., into the Creek Nation and of a talk with the chiefs of that nation assembled to make a settlement with him for debts of the nation to the company. The original manuscript is in the possession of Mrs. John W. Greenslade, of Washington, D. C., a great-granddaughter of the journalist, to whom grateful acknowledgment is made.

Hall of Miami Beach, Florida, wrote me that the State Historical Society of Missouri was in possession of his great-grandfather’s papers written while in Florida. His great-grandfather was Lieut. Col. (afterward General) Thomas Adam Smith, who commanded the United States regulars in Florida in 1812-13. Through the courtesy of Arthur T. Seventeen years ago Florida entered the fifth century of her history under European influence. Her past four centuries have been full to overflowing with conquests and colonization schemes fairly reeking with romantic adventure, and constitute a period difficult to rival in the colonial history of any commonwealth.
