Obituary: Thomas Frederick Davis, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
Thomas Frederick Davis died on October 17 last. For many years there have not been many of his days in which Florida history did not claim at least an hour or two. His research was a continual search for the truth, not an effort to write history as he wished it to be. Only when the evidence seemed indisputable did he suggest his conclusions; more often he spread the result of his research before the reader and left it for each one to draw his own conclusions.

The German Palatinate produced the ancestors of Henry Morrison Flagler, American oil magnate, railroad builder and developer. The Fleglers (as the name was then spelled) left the Palatinate in 1688 as a result of the devastating wars of Louis XIV, and went to Holland for safety. Among the family was one Zacharra Flegler, who strayed away from Holland to England, and worked for several years in Walworth as a carpenter, among other Palatines who had fled their native home. Life offered little in England as compared to the stories he had heard concerning America, so he left Walworth early in …
Captain Bunce’S Tampa Bay Fisheries, Dorothy Dodd
Captain Bunce’S Tampa Bay Fisheries, Dorothy Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The known facts about William Bunce can be stated briefly. He was a sea captain from Baltimore, who engaged in the mercantile business at Key West from August, 1824, until 1829. In 1832 he was listed as a customs inspector in the Key West District. 3 In the same year he commanded the small sloop Associate, out of Key West, in which George W. Murray, W. R. Hackley, and P. B. Prior visited Carlos bay and Charlotte Harbor to locate a site for a settlement on the Allagon Grant. Bunce’s activities on the coast of southwest Florida naturally made him …

Stephen Russell Mallory, Occie Clubbs
Florida Historical Quarterly
Perhaps Charles Mallory, as he worked at his carpenter’s bench somewhere in New England, dreamed that some day he might have a son to work beside him or to follow him at the same bench; and later, now a building superintendent and contractor in the island of Trinidad off the coast of South America, he may have dreamed again that the little Stephen playing about his shop or office, might become a great man. But if so, the reality far surpassed his dreams-for the boy became a member of the foremost legislative body of the world, and later was one …

Ponce De Leon, Florida Historical Society
Ponce De Leon, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
We in Florida have a niche in our history which Ponce de León shares with no one. It might be that other Europeans saw our shore before he did, but for us it was he who discovered Florida and certainly he gave us our name. We believe that our land is a fountain of youth, but we will always hope against odds that in the vast store of records of his period preserved in Spain some hint from Ponce may yet come to light that when he set out on his quest of new lands and gold, there was, too, …

Some Military Affairs In Territorial Florida, Albert C. Manucy

When the red and gold banner of Spain was unfurled over the Castillo at St. Augustine on Tuesday morning, July 10, 1821, the Castillo guns roared a salute. Later in the day the cannon fired again, and the 23-star flag of the United States was hoisted above the ramparts beside the Spanish banner. U. S. troops formed near the Castillo. Again the guns thundered, and as the echoes died away, Spain’s flag came slowly down. A detachment from the American force marched over the drawbridge into the Castillo, where the drums beat the change of guard.
The City Of Wreckers: Two Key West Letters Of 1838, Kenneth Scott
The City Of Wreckers: Two Key West Letters Of 1838, Kenneth Scott
Florida Historical Quarterly
At the time of the war with the Seminoles a northern attorney, Charles Walker, spent some time at Key West. While there he sent two detailed letters to an uncle and aunt, Timothy Walker and his wife, Lydia, in his native Concord, New Hampshire. The pleasing style and keen observation of the writer afford a vivid picture of Key West shortly before 1840.

The Alagon, Punon Rostro, And Vargas Grants, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the year 1803, when public attention was directed to the question of our right of deposit at New Orleans, the United States House of Representatives appointed a committee to report upon certain matters, including the advisability of annexing Spanish East and West Florida to the United States. The report of this committee concluded: “If we look forward to the free use of the Mississippi, the Mobile, the Apalachicola, and the other rivers of the west, by ourselves and our posterity, New-Orleans and the Floridas must become a part of the U. States, either by purchase or by conquest.” This …
Theatrical Entertainment In Early Florida, William G. Dodd
Theatrical Entertainment In Early Florida, William G. Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
Theatrical entertainment in early Florida was greatly facilitated by water transportation. The Florida towns with which this story is concerned were all within easy distance, by sea or river, of cities which had well-established professional theatres. They therefore provided actors in those theatres with favorable opportunities to supplement their regular season by a preceding or subsequent engagement; or, sometimes, to fill up part of an otherwise vacant summer.

The Port Of St. Augustine During The British Regime, Part Ii, Wilbur H. Siebert
The Port Of St. Augustine During The British Regime, Part Ii, Wilbur H. Siebert
Florida Historical Quarterly
Loyal to King George III, East Florida soon became involved with her rebellious neighbors to the northward. Wartime was reflected in the shipping at St. Augustine and the privateering in nearby waters. The first hostility of that neighborhood was the seizure of one hundred and eleven barrels and thirty-seven kegs of gunpowder from the English brigantine Betsy in July 1775 by a South Carolina sloop outside the bar. The aggressor escaped to the northward.
