St. Joseph, An Episode Of The Economic And Political History Of Florida, James O. Knauss
St. Joseph, An Episode Of The Economic And Political History Of Florida, James O. Knauss
Florida Historical Quarterly
No subject within the wide range of Florida’s history has stirred a greater interest than St. Joseph. Because of its quick rise to importance, its still more rapid decline, and the double tragedy of its extinction, an aspect of romance has settled upon the dead town, heightened through tradition and a haze of unreality engendered by the lack of definite records of its life. Dr. Knauss, searching out and bringing together these scanty records, gives us a light, for the first time, to penetrate that mist. - Ed .

FOREWORD. Two years ago Florida State College for Women was the recipient of an annual prize of fifty dollars offered by Mr. D. H. Redfearn of Miami for the winning essay on a selected topic in Florida History. The topic for this essay is selected by Mr. Redfearn with the consultation and advice of the Department of History of the College. Qualifications for the competition are broadly drawn because it is not the desire of the donor nor the department to limit it only to those who are specializing in history. Students are required to have had merely sufficient history …

A Map Of, The Road From Pensacola To St. Augustine, 1778 (With Nine Plates), Mark F. Boyd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The attention of students of Florida history is called to the Stuart-Purcell map of the road from Pensacola to St. Augustine, which was brought to the writer’s notice by Dr. John R. Swanton. Considered both from the standpoint of the representation of topography, as well as the descriptive legend, it is the outstanding available account of the interior of western and much of northern Florida in the British colonial period.

The Panton, Leslie Papers: Letters Of Edmund Doyle, Trader, 1808-1814, Edmund Doyle
The Panton, Leslie Papers: Letters Of Edmund Doyle, Trader, 1808-1814, Edmund Doyle
Florida Historical Quarterly
These letters are the first of a series of thirteen written by Edmund Doyle, their representative, to members of the firm of John Forbes & Co. (successors to Panton, Leslie & Co.) from their trading house on the Apalachicola river between 1808 and 1817, in some of which mention is made of the intrigues of Capt. George Woodbine in that region. As an introduction to this series there appeared in the October, 1937, issue of the Quarterly a paper by Mark F. Boyd entitled Events at Prospect Bluff on the Apalachicola River, 1808-1818.
The St. Joseph Convention Iii: The Making Of Florida’S First Constitution, F. W. Hoskins
The St. Joseph Convention Iii: The Making Of Florida’S First Constitution, F. W. Hoskins
Florida Historical Quarterly
At last the work of the convention drew to a close. The differences that arose as the various articles of the constitution were reported by each committee were finally adjusted and the proposed constitution was ready to be submitted to the house. Nearly six weeks had passed since the convention had assembled. Many acquaintances had been made, friendships formed, and associations enjoyed, and now this was the last day. The convention would pass into history, and many were never to meet again. We cannot do better than quote from the journal.

Concession Made By The King Of Spain To De Soto, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
This translation was made by Buckingham Smith from a copy in the Archivo de Indias at Seville (rubricated by the secretary Samano). It was published in the appendix of his translation of the Elvas Narrative, the Bradford Club edition (New York, 1866) from which it is reprinted. Florida historians and all who are interested in our history are under great obligation to this Floridian and scholar who made so much of our Spanish colonial history known to us.
Letter Of De Soto To The Secular Cabildo Of Santiago De Cuba, Hernando Desoto
Letter Of De Soto To The Secular Cabildo Of Santiago De Cuba, Hernando Desoto
Florida Historical Quarterly
This translation of De Soto’s letter, doubtless the first letter ever written with a Florida date line, has been made for the Quarterly by James A. Robertson, managing editor of Hispanic American Historical Review and editor of the series of volumes on Florida’s history published by the Florida State Historical Society. These include a facsimile of the first edition of the Elvas Narrative with a new translation of that early classic by Dr. Robertson himself. As De Soto’s letter bears so important a relation to our knowledge of the beginning of his exploration here in Florida, Dr. Robertson has made …
The Landing Place Of De Soto, John R. Swanton
The Landing Place Of De Soto, John R. Swanton
Florida Historical Quarterly
It admits of no reasonable doubt that the place where Hernando de Soto’s army landed, at the end of May, 1539, was in Tampa Bay. Although I have considered other possibilities carefully I shall not enter upon a discussion of them in the present article. But while there has been almost unanimous agreement on this point, the exact location of the landing place within the bay has given occasion for very sharp differences of opinion for over a hundred years and almost every possible site has been made the basis for someone’s theory. Too many of these hypotheses have been …
