Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
On April 18, 1988, an archaeological crew from the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted a testing program at the historic dam for Mission San Juan Capistrano, San Antonio, Texas. The results of the excavations and the corresponding archival research are reported. Conclusions are drawn as to the dam's location, formation, and function.

Archaeological And Historical Investigations For The Mission Road Realignment Project, San Antonio, Texas, Joseph H. Labadie
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The Mission Road Realignment Project proposes to relocate the current position of Mission Road, which transects the original Mission Concepcion quadrangle, farther west and in the vicinity of the road's 18th-century location. Archaeological testing conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research sought to determine if significant cultural resources would be adversely impacted by the road relocation project. Intensive testing established that no significant remains were located within or adjacent to the proposed right-of-way.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Site 41KR243, the Camp Pearl Wheat Site, is located along FM 783 and the south bank of Town Creek in Kerr County, central Texas (Fig. 1). The site was identified and recommended for testing by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) in response to plans for realigning a hazardous curve on FM 783. Test excavations were performed in June 1988 and consisted of three 2-meter square hand-excavated units within the proposed 120 foot wide right-of-way. Although testing was limited because a portion of the site is used as a summer youth camp, Camp Pearl Wheat, sufficient data …

The Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) will replace the bridge on CR 439 (signed "County Road 129") over Brushy Creek in the south-central part of the county at Norman's Crossing (Figures 1 and 2). The new bridge will be built just east of the present bridge. The present bridge will continue to be used until the new bridge is completed, which eliminates the need for a temporary detour easement. Additional right-of-way will be obtained east of the county road in order to construct the new bridge and approaches.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT), Highway Design Division, in cooperation with the Office of the State Governor, The Office of the State Historic Preservation Officer, and the City of Laredo, has recently investigated the approach roadway and the bridge site of the proposed Colombia-Laredo International Bridge across the Rio Grande, in Webb County, Texas. The work was conducted to identify cultural resources in these areas and to offer a preliminary description and evaluation of historic properties considered to be potentially eligible to the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1987, Prewitt and Associates, Inc. conducted a Phase I archeological reconnaissance of the proposed Justiceburg Reservoir located in Garza and Kent counties, Texas. The investigations included a 100\ pedestrian survey, a preliminary geoarcheoloqical study, and historic archival and field research. Three hundred and seventy-five sites were documented in the ca. 8600-acre project area. Two hundred and eighty-eight sites contain prehistoric archeological components consisting of: no Paleoindian or early Archaic, 4 middle Archaic, 10 late Archaic, 10 undefined Archaic, 24 Late Prehistoric, 204 undefined prehistoric, and 45 isolated finds (total components = 252). The prehistoric site descriptions are divided into three sections: Garza County, Kent County, and Isolated Finds. All sites are described fully in a telegraphic format in order to conserve space. The descriptions are organized by county in alphabetical order and in numerical order of site within each county. Information for each site 1s organized into six headings: location, description, features, cultural materials observed/collected, shovel test data, and assessment/recommendations. The determination of the percentage of the site remaining intact is based on in-field observations of the postulated original areal extent of the site versus what is still potentially intact. Assessments are …

Vantage Points: Prose Parables Of The Republic, Shaun O'Connell
New England Journal of Public Policy
Shaun O'Connell brings his usual insights to his book review essay. "Our novelists," he concludes, "have served us better than our politicians in classifying our condition" — an accomplishment that is somewhat less grand than it seems when we remember that the recent competition came from George Bush's "Read my lips" and "A thousand points of light" and Michael Dukakis's "Good jobs at good wages" and "I'm on your side."
Among the works discussed in this essay: Firebird, by James Carroll; Where I'm Calling From: New and Selected Stories, by Raymond Carver; Paris Trout, by Pete Dexter; …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In August and September 1986, personnel from Prewitt and Associates, Inc. conducted an inventory and assessment of cultural resources in five recreational area tracts above the conservation pool elevation of the proposed Stacy Reservoir in Concho, Coleman. and Runnels counties, Texas. These investigations were sponsored by the Colorado River Municipal Water District in compliance with federal requirements for a construction permit from the Corps of Engineers. Approximately 1,690 acres were surveyed. and five previously unrecorded sites were discovered and documented. Cairn feature sites 41CC213 and 41CC237 are deemed potentially significant and should be preserved or investigated to determine their significance …
Dorothy Thompson: Withstanding The Storm, Michael J. Kirkhorn
Dorothy Thompson: Withstanding The Storm, Michael J. Kirkhorn
The Courier
The "unremitting terror" of totalitarianism was Dorothy Thompson's nightmare. She witnessed the atrocities of Nazism, and later, after the Second World War, the cruelty of Soviet communism. The violent will to power that she described for her millions of readers was for her the nemesis of all hope and goodness. It could not be appeased, it could not be satisfied; it had to be resisted. Her profound recognition of that single necessity, and her frustration with the complacency with which this great threat was met at home drew her, one of the great political journalists of the century, into misjudments …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In 1986, cultural resources investigations were carried out to prepare a synthesis of the archeology of the Whiteoak Bayou area in western Harris County, Texas, and to conduct subsurface testing at prehistoric sites that may be affected by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Upper Whiteoak Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project. The tasks undertaken during these investigations are: (1) background research into the environment and archeology of the area; (2) historic/archival research and reconnaissance survey to summarize the historical development of Whiteoak Bayou and to identify any important sites in the project area; (3) intensive survey of Vogel Creek, a …
