A targeted intensive archeological survey was completed to inventory and evaluate archeological resources within the footprint of proposed improvements and roadway widening to Upland Avenue between 66th Street and 114th Street in the City of Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas.

The total project is approximately 3.0 miles (4.8 kilometers) in length within a 120-foot- (36.6- meter-) wide corridor; typical depth of impacts is expected to be 2 feet (0.6 meters) along the roadway. The archeological area of potential effects (APE) consists of the entire footprint of the project, which covers approximately 60.44 acres and consists of 46.10 acres of existing right …

This report presents the results of an archeological survey of a proposed detention basin and outflow structures along Cypress Creek in Harris County, Texas. The project was sponsored by the Harris County Municipal Utility District (MUD) 502, and required consultation with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. This necessitated compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106) and the Antiquities Code of Texas (ACT). In October 2018, AmaTerra Environmental conducted an archeological survey of drainage detention ponds associated with the proposed expansion of FM 1960 from Wilson Drive to Astascosita Shores Drive in Harris County, Texas. The project was conducted in behalf of TxDOT under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 8952. Fieldwork entailed visual inspection and shovel testing at four of five detention pond locations. Two additional detention ponds were assessed through archival research and visual inspection and found to have no potential for archeological resources. AmaTerra excavated 28 shovel tests–none of which contained cultural materials. No archeological sites were documented and this report recommends …

The Area of Potential Effect (APE) for this project consists of the 50-foot corridor for the proposed force main, incorporating two proposed alignments, totaling 1.63-miles (2.62-kilometers), and a total area of 11.39 acres (4.61 hectares) (Figures 1 and 2).

North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) is proposing to construct the Lower Bois d’Arc Creek Reservoir in northeast Fannin County, Texas. Due to the proposed inundation, nine bridge/culvert locations will be inundated, and new bridges/culverts will be constructed. White Hawk, which is handling the engineering for the project, contracted with AR Consultants, Inc. to evaluate the proposed bridge locations to determine if significant cultural resources are within the study areas. A total of 162.64 acres (65.81 hectares) were examined with 65.39 acres (26.46 hectares) intensively shovel tested. The project would be situated between Farm-to-Market Road 2931 and Pecan Creek at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 2931 and Brewer Road with private properties as the north and south boundaries.

The Tugalo site is a prehistoric and early historic Native American site located in northeast Georgia along the upper Savannah River basin, near the junction of Toccoa Creek and the Tugalo River. According to archaeological materials analyzed from the site it was occupied from ca. A.D. 1100 to 1600 (Anderson et al. 1995). Although archaeological investigations of the site revealed basic characteristics of its chronology and architecture, very little analysis and reporting of the skeletal remains from Tugalo has been completed. Activism entails not only individuals overtly campaigning for changes in public spheres, but in other ways and strategies as well. One of these other avenues is the use of political satire and humor. Comedy publicizes frustrations of American issues, just as sit-ins, walk-outs, or marches do. For the most part, scholars fail to address the importance of humor. This work researches not only the comedic works of Charlie Hill, the 1491s, and other American Indian comedians, but also how their craft possibly alters stances and opinions. Northeast Historical Archaeology

Excavations at the Smith-Maskell Site (28CA124) in the Spring of 2011 by URS Corporation revealed a number of early 19th-century features behind what was once 318 Cooper Street in Camden, New Jersey. These features produced significant quantities of Federal period tea and tablewares, including a number of Philadelphia Queensware vessels. During this period Camden was beginning its transition from a scattering of sparsely populated villages to a city of summer residences and country retreats for Philadelphia’s well-to-do middle class. The likely owners of the Philadelphia Queensware found at the Smith-Maskell Site were among this prosperous middle class, and thus the …

This article examines the history of several manufacturers of American queensware in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and beyond. Our research reveals that efforts to produce queensware were more extensive and widespread than previously thought. This survey expanded as we discovered references to contemporary queensware potteries in other parts of the United States during the first two decades of the 19th century. In all, 14 queensware-manufacturing ventures are identified and described from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, what is now West Virginia, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Much of this research is drawn from period newspaper notices, advertisements, and surviving personal correspondence. The period …

This dissertation examines art produced in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico during the early twentieth century, putting the works of Pueblo artists who lived in the area into dialogue with the works of Anglo-American modernists who traveled there. I take as case studies three artists whose practices are linked by both circumstance and agenda: Maria Martinez, a famed Pueblo potter; John Sloan, a leading member of The Eight and the Ashcan School; and Tonita Peña, a Pueblo watercolor painter. This essay is in response to an assignment that required students to select a short book of the Bible and discuss it in two parts. The first section offers an academic appreciation and analysis of the work. In part two students were challenged with imagining that they were a disciple of the author of the book and were asked to compose a funeral eulogy for their recently deceased teacher. Mike’s wonderful essay on Ecclesiastes, a biblical meditation on the meaning of life, is consistently engaging. At times lyrical in phrasing, it is both evocative and insightful---a joy to read.
