Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Cultural resources investigations conducted during 1981 and 1984 for the proposed Applewhite Reservoir of southwest Bexar County, Texas, identified a total of 78 archaeological sites. Additionally, seven previously recorded sites in the Medio Creek confluence area were revisited and reassessed, bringing the total number of sites within the proposed reservoir to 85. Descriptions of these sites, evaluations of their significance, and recommendations for further work are presented in the report. Events and cultural changes related to the project area are also summarized. Limited testing data from 13 sites first identified in 1981 and recommended for further work in the 1984 …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
From July through September of 1984, personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of 984.96 hectares (2433.82 acres) of the CPS Butler lignite prospect in northern Bastrop County and southern Lee County, Texas. These investigations are part of a series of archaeological surveys sponsored by City Public Service of San Antonio, who plan a lignite mining project in the area. The purpose of the survey was to meet federal requirements of eligibility status of any archaeological site as to National Register of Historic Places qualification, so that …

An Archaeological And Historical Assessment Of The Vista Verde South Project, San Antonio, Texas, Joseph H. Labadie
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The Vista Verde South project area has borne witness to much of the economic development that has occurred in downtown San Antonio since the early years of Texas' statehood. As with many other areas of San Antonio, economic interests stimulated early development. Following the Civil War, this area became an integral part in San Antonio's flourishing freight hauling and transportation network. By the turn of the 20th century, the area had developed into an ethnically diverse, middle-class neighborhood, while just a few blocks away, San Antonio's infamous Red Light District thrived. The Great Depression of 1929 struck a critical blow …

Under Contract No. DACW63-81-C-0022 to the Department of the Army, Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, in the spring of 1981, conducted historic research and survey in the areas to be affected by the San Antonio Channel Improvement Project. In the summer of 1981, extensive archaeological testing and excavation were done to determine the extent of the structural remains on the sites of Guenther's Upper Mill and the Stribling House. In the spring and summer of 1982, the Center documented the removal and replacement of the mill's west …

Archaeological Testing Of Site 41bl260 Bell County, Texas, Wayne C. Young
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Testing of Site 41BL260 along the proposed FM 93 realignment in Be11 County, Texas was undertaken in December 1987 to determine the site's eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places, and to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance. The site is located in a plowed field near the eastern outskirts of Belton, Texas. Testing results indicate that the site is limited to the present plow zone and that no intact cultural deposits remain within the proposed right-of-way. Evidence recovered does not support a determination of eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

Excavations At Site 41fy11: Cultural Resource Investigations Along The Proposed Bypass For Sh 71, Near La Grange Fayette County, Texas, Alan J. Wormser
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Test excavations were conducted at Site 41FY111 by Alan J. Wormser of the cultural resources staff at the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT). The excavation was completed between March 30, and April 2, 1987, as part of a bypass project along SH 71 north of La Grange, Fayette County, Texas. Although the prehistoric remains were scattered over a broad area, most of the site was concentrated on top of knoll of cherty gravel deposits. Sixteen 1 X 1 meter test units were excavated to depths of between 10 and 50 cm below the surface. This resulted …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Testing of Site 41BU49 on FM 696 in Burleson County, Texas, was under-taken in March 1987 to determine eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places and to make a recommendation for nomination as a State Archeological Landmark. Testing also was under-taken to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance. The site is located along a hill slope overlooking Buffalo Creek and consists of a shallow, low-density cultural deposit which may have been impacted by agricultural activities in the past. The exact site limit could not be determined due to heavy vegetation covering most of the area. …

Archaeological Testing Of Sites 41cj75 And 41cj76 Comanche County, Texas, Wayne C. Young
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Archaeological testing of two sites in western Comanche County, 41CJ75 and 41CJ76, by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) during April 1987 has shown that both sites are shallow, low density, prehistoric campsites. Portions of both sites outside the right-of-way of SH 36 have been impacted by cultivation and site integrity has been lost. Those portions within the right-of-way are located within steep backslopes which made testing difficult. Site 41CJ75 was found to be only 10 cm deep except where the SDHPT had placed recent fill on the site. Site 41CJ76 was located along a very steep …

Over the years American writers have perceived Appalachia differently depending on how America has perceived itself. While those who have approved of the American way of life have looked down on mountain life, those who have disapproved have seen Appalachia as an alternative culture from which America might take a lesson (Appalachia, 65). In 1873 the journalist William Harney and the editors of Lippincott Magazine "discovered" Appalachia, and historian Henry Shapiro argues that since then America has thought of this mountainous portion of eight southern states as a discreet region, "in but not of America" (Appalachia, 4). In …

Common Cause: The Antislavery Alliance Of Gerrit Smith And Beriah Green, Milton C. Sernett

The Gerrit Smith Papers in the manuscript collections of the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University are an indispensable resource for scholars interested in American social reform. Given to the University in 1928 by Gerrit Smith Miller, a grandson, the col
lection reveals that the abolition of slavery dominated the Madison County philanthropist's reform interests from the mid-1830s to the Civil War. Of Gerrit Smith's numerous antislavery correspondents, including such prominent reformers as William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, and Theodore Dwight Weld, none maintained a more regular and extensive epistolary relationship than Beriah Green, upstate New York's most radical …
