Nobility, Family, And Service: Menéndez And His Men, John Frederick Schwaller
Nobility, Family, And Service: Menéndez And His Men, John Frederick Schwaller
Florida Historical Quarterly
The conquest of Florida by the Spanish has been described by Eugene Lyon and other important scholars. Nevertheless, it is sometimes forgotten that Florida was only a small and relatively unimportant part of Spain’s vast American empire. Yet those conquistadors and their followers who came to Florida are an interesting lot. This is particularly true of these men who served with Menéndez in Florida, a group of whom ended their lives and careers in Mexico. An examination of their activities reveals the ties of family, the status of nobility, and the importance of royal service.

Ordeal By Siege: James Bruce In Pensacola, 1780-1781, Robin F. A. Fabel
Ordeal By Siege: James Bruce In Pensacola, 1780-1781, Robin F. A. Fabel
Florida Historical Quarterly
Of the aspects of British West Florida attracting the attention of historians none surpasses the siege of Pensacola in 1781. All accounts rely on the reports of combatant participants, but no historian of West Florida has evidently used or perhaps been aware of the observations of one of the many civilian observers trapped by war in Pensacola. He was James Bruce, collector of customs at Pensacola. While enduring with his countrymen the final desperate days of British rule in the province, he wrote six letters to mercantile friends in London. They provide, apart from illuminating details of economic conditions during …
William J. Howey And His Florida Dreams, Melvin Edward Hughes, Jr.
William J. Howey And His Florida Dreams, Melvin Edward Hughes, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
William John Howey was a land speculator who came to Florida in 1908 and devised a unique land sales and development program on nearly 60,000 acres of land in Lake County. Howey’s plan, based on the sale of undeveloped citrus land, led to the creation of Howey-in-the-Hills, a town he envisioned as the “City Inevitable.“ In addition to this visionary enterprise Howey ran as the Republican candidate for governor of Florida in 1928, and again in 1932.
Vegetable Hair: The Spanish Moss Industry In Florida, Anne Gometz Foshee
Vegetable Hair: The Spanish Moss Industry In Florida, Anne Gometz Foshee
Florida Historical Quarterly
Some people do not care for Spanish moss. According to an anonymous writer in the American Cyclopedia in 1881 “its effect, on account of its sombre color, is not altogether pleasing.“ However, the moss, eyecatching feature of the southern landscape that it is, has usually been regarded as an aesthetic asset, appealing to tourists and to the romantically-minded. Many people today have forgotten, if they ever knew, that it was once a more direct economic asset, serving a number of utilitarian purposes. Along with its value as a cattle feed and as a cheap packing material for crates of fruits …

On The Land For Life: Black Tenant Farmers On Tall Timbers Plantation, Susan Hamburger
Florida Historical Quarterly
Since the 1830s the Tall Timbers Research Station land in northern Leon County, Florida, supported agricultural pursuits ranging from antebellum cotton plantations to twentieth-century quail hunting to fire management studies. The continual thread from the 1830s to the 1940s is the black worker, who evolved from slave to tenant farmer. This study will concentrate on the continuity of occupancy on this land of selected black families from 1865 to 1900.
Minorcan Population Of St. Augustine In The Spanish Census Of 1786, Philip D. Rasico
Minorcan Population Of St. Augustine In The Spanish Census Of 1786, Philip D. Rasico
Florida Historical Quarterly
Nearly half a century ago the noted historian of Spanish colonial Florida, Joseph Byrne Lockey published a transcription, accompanied by a preface and notes, of the Spanish census of St. Augustine and its vicinity which was prepared in December 1786 by the Salamanca-educated Irish priest, Thomas Hassett. An incomplete draft of this document is in the East Florida Papers in the Manuscripts Division of the Library of Congress. Lockey’s translation of the draft is also incomplete; he omits the lengthy section which contains the largest and most ethnically-diverse sector of St. Augustine’s civilian population during the early years of the …

"New Red Atlantis": John Collier's Encounter With The Florida Seminoles In 1935, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
In March 1935, some two years following his appointment as commissioner of Indian Affairs by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, John Collier paid his first official visit to the Seminole Tribe in Florida. Although recognized as one of the nation’s leading Indian Rights advocates throughout the 1920s Collier’s work had been focused almost exclusively among the western tribes. As secretary of the American Indian Defense Association, he frequently appeared before various congressional committees, testifying on such issues as tribal water and mineral rights, control of reservation lands, and Indian religious freedom. His name had become synonymous with a progressive commitment to …

The Alachua-St. Marys Road, Burke G. Vanderhill
The Alachua-St. Marys Road, Burke G. Vanderhill
Florida Historical Quarterly
The foot trails and rough cart roads of early nineteenth-century Florida reflected the needs for communication and trade which were changed significantly as the territory was organized and development began under American administration. Nevertheless, there was a tendency for continued local use of these old routes long after the original functions had been lost. Not only was it easier to improve or modify an existing trace than to cut an entirely new one through the Florida forests, but the early routes were relatively felicitous, following the drainage divides, skirting the extensive swampland tracts, and avoiding more difficult river crossings. Numerous …
Creating A Different Pattern: Florida's Women Legislators, 1928-1986, Mary Carolyn Ellis
Creating A Different Pattern: Florida's Women Legislators, 1928-1986, Mary Carolyn Ellis
Florida Historical Quarterly
Florida in the nineteenth century was a traditional southern state. The legacy from the Civil War and Reconstruction lingered into the early decades of the twentieth century, principally with regard to cultural expectations, racial prejudice, and one-party Democratic politics. Women’s roles in the society were carefully defined, and there was not much divergence from cultural expectations. Florida Congressman Frank Clark expressed this traditional attitude in 1915: “Let us then leave woman where she is— the loveliest of all creation, queen of the household.“
Twilight Of The Mocamo And Guale Aborigines As Portrayed In The 1695 Spanish Visitation, John H. Hann
Twilight Of The Mocamo And Guale Aborigines As Portrayed In The 1695 Spanish Visitation, John H. Hann
Florida Historical Quarterly
The natives of Mocamo and Guale on the coasts of Georgia and northern Florida were the first with whom the French and then the Spaniards established steady contact in the 1560s and among the first to be missionized. Yet, as scholars have remarked, surprisingly little is known about these people during the historic period either archaeologically or historically. Only for the years 1597-1606 are there detailed published accounts of events in the Guale and Mocamo missions in the works of John Tate Lanning, Maynard Geiger, OFM, and Manuel Serrano y Sanz, and in Kathleen Deagan’s chapter on the eastern Timucua …
Florida And The World's Columbian Exposition Of 1893, Stephen Kerber
Florida And The World's Columbian Exposition Of 1893, Stephen Kerber
Florida Historical Quarterly
It is a common misconception that Chicago, Illinois, is known as “the Windy City” for its weather. Actually, the name originated during the nineteenth century as a derisive comment upon the often-exaggerated rhetoric employed by Chicagoans engaged in praising their community. This prideful attitude would find its finest and most enduring expression in the poetry of Carl Sandburg. It was this same spirit of aggressive boosterism which in the 1890s enabled Chicagoans to win congressional approval to host on behalf of the nation a great international exposition celebrating the four hundredth anniversary of Columbus’s discovery of the New World, and …

Paper Sons And Chosen Families: Blurry Archives And Non-Biological Kinship In The Chong Family Album, Sam Battles
Paper Sons And Chosen Families: Blurry Archives And Non-Biological Kinship In The Chong Family Album, Sam Battles
Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections
In the face of Chinese exclusion and Victorian-era morality, this project presents a family photo album as a counter-narrative to racialized and gendered immigration policies. The photo album is from the Chong family who were part of a Chinese American community living in San Francisco around 1915. The paper follows the fluctuating and non-chronological layout of the album and the uncertainties within to analyze Chinese Americans family formations in the context of state control of Asian migrants, including hyper-policing and surveillance around immigration status, queerness, and class. The Chong family album demonstrates how Chinese Americans employed flexible definitions of family …
The Great Awakening And The Coming Of The American Revolution, Kerry E. Irish
The Great Awakening And The Coming Of The American Revolution, Kerry E. Irish
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
The “Great Awakening” was a Christian revival of the mid-Eighteenth century. Dozens of travelling preachers, famous and obscure, along with local ministers, called colonial Americans to a stronger and deeper Christian faith. The Great Awakening was also a trans-Atlantic event. Charles and John Wesley were leaders of the awakening in England. But it was in America where the movement would have its most profound expression and impact. For the Great Awakening, along with the philosophic and scientific developments of the Enlightenment, transformed American culture socially and politically, setting the stage for the American Revolution.
