Florida's Flying Minute Men: The Civil Air Patrol, 1941-1943, Thomas Reilly
Florida's Flying Minute Men: The Civil Air Patrol, 1941-1943, Thomas Reilly
Florida Historical Quarterly
As the United States teetered on the brink of war, many worried that the country was woefully unprepared to defend its own shores. Several prominent Americans developed the idea of a civilian defense force to patrol the offshore waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. A committee headed by Gill Robb Wilson, National Aeronautic Association president and aviation editor for the New York Herald Tribune, presented a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) plan to Fiorello H. LaGuardia, director of the United States Civilian Defense, mayor of New York City, and World War I flyer. Unlike many …
Claude Pepper, Strom Thurmond, And The 1948 Presidential Election In Florida, Julian M. Pleasants
Claude Pepper, Strom Thurmond, And The 1948 Presidential Election In Florida, Julian M. Pleasants
Florida Historical Quarterly
In his book, The Loneliest Campaign, Irwin Ross called Harry S. Truman’s victory in the presidential election of 1948 “the most astonishing political upset in modern times.“1 Truman achieved this victory despite a three-way split in the Democratic Party. Strom Thurmond, governor of South Carolina and presidential candidate for the States’ Rights Democratic Party, and Henry Wallace, former secretary of agriculture and vice president, and nominee of the Progressive Party, both denounced Truman and opposed his election.

The Florida Architecture Of F. Burrall Hoffman Jr., 1882-1980, Donald W. Curl
The Florida Architecture Of F. Burrall Hoffman Jr., 1882-1980, Donald W. Curl
Florida Historical Quarterly
Everyone interested in Florida’s architectural history should know of Francis Burrall Hoffman Jr. and his connection to Miami’s great villa Vizcaya. Few realize he had a distinguished Florida career spanning over sixty years and designed buildings in several sections of the state. In fact, when the United States entered World War I in 1917, the thirty-five-year-old Hoffman may have been, in terms of cost of commissions, Florida’s most successful domestic architect. In only eight short years of private practice, Hoffman had designed Vizcaya, the Biscayne Bay mansion, for industrialist James Deering, large oceanfront residences in Palm Beach for Mrs. Frederick …

Civil Rights And School Desegregation In Sanford, Patricia Dillon
Civil Rights And School Desegregation In Sanford, Patricia Dillon
Florida Historical Quarterly
The civil rights movement in the United States reached beyond the federal legislation that eradicated legal segregation. The movement also fundamentally transformed how white and black Americans interacted on a daily basis in small communities and large urban centers. Historians such as John Dittmer, William H. Chafe, and David R. Colburn have analyzed how national laws affected racial relations at the community level. While Dittmer and Chafe examined the movement in states traditionally associated with the civil rights movement— Mississippi and North Carolina respectively—Colburn looked at the movement in Florida, a state whose contemporary popular image as a tourist haven …
