Camp Depression: An Era Of Hope And Opportunity At The University Of North Dakota, University Of North Dakota

UND Publications

Camp Depression opened October 21, 1933, at the University of North Dakota. It was designed to create low-cost housing for needy, but determined male students who wanted to obtain an education during the Great Depression. The camp consisted of six cabooses that were joined together and remodeled. Four cars were used for sleeping, a fifth was a combination kitchen/washroom, and a sixth was used as a study hall. Camp Depression residents paid their room and board by working four hours per week on campus. The residents shared cooking expenses, rotated mess duties in the kitchen and elsewhere, and enforced "quiet …

Multicultural education is one of the most challenging issues for modern scholars. This thesis studies the issue of ethnicity in teaching, using the works of Leslie Marmon Silko and Louise Erdrich and the theory of R. Radhakrishnan which outlines "programmatic" and "radical" ethnicity. Louise Erdrich and Leslie Silko are women about the same age, of mixed-race heritage, but they represent very different agendas within the Native American community and the American community as a whole. They are not interchangeable; Erdrich focuses on individuals, Native and non-Native, inside a bizarre community. Her concept involves radical ethnicity. Silko's characters are more important …

Since 1949 Syracuse University has assembled historical documents, including manuscript, print, visual, and media materials, related to adult education. The Adult and Continuing Education Collections, housed in the George Arents Research Library, now form one of the world's largest compilations of English-language materials in this field. They occupy 900 feet of shelf space and contain more than 50 groups of personal papers and records of organizations, all of which reveal much about the development of adult education as a field of study and as a practice in such areas as literacy and civic education.

Professing American Literature: A Report From Brazil, Arnold Gordenstein

New England Journal of Public Policy

This American professor discovered that although his Brazilian students appeared to be entirely receptive to American literature, they were often culturally blocked from the concepts the books contained. He also found that some key American ideas don't translate well into Brazilian culture and that it is nearly impossible for a professor abroad to present literature in a politically and culturally neutral way.

This study is about the relationship of content in teaching to the process in teaching for the purpose of helping students to become better readers of literature. This study investigates two selected teaching strategies supported by research to be effective, and applies them to the teaching of a canonical piece of literature, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
