Matthew Braun is a successful author of Western novels and criticism of Western fiction. He was bom outside Elk City, Oklahoma, in 1932. His family tree includes hunters, settlers, ranchers, stock inspectors, and members of the Cherokee tribe. From his early years Matt Braun associated with Cherokee and Osage Indians. During World War II, while his father was in the U.S. Navy and his mother worked at an army base, Braun went to a military academy in Bartlesville. In 1974, Choice magazine voiced a widely held opinion when it characterized Dee A. Brown as “a distinguished writer of Western history” (284). By then he had also become known to a wide audience as a first-rate storyteller. The Zen Of Stevens, Rebecca Dickens

Masters Theses

Using comparative studies as background, I develop a Zen model for reading Stevens, arguing that his poetry works in the manner of Zen anecdotes and that it can be understood better by understanding Zen. Three critical studies of Wallace Stevens and Zen assert the Zen-like qualities of Stevens' poetry. Stevens has affinities with Zen writers in three areas: use of language, explorations into the nature of thought, and the structure of anecdotes and poems.

This study is about the relationship of content in teaching to the process in teaching for the purpose of helping students to become better readers of literature. This study investigates two selected teaching strategies supported by research to be effective, and applies them to the teaching of a canonical piece of literature, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This study employs literary theory in the development of the objectives and applies both cooperative learning and mastery learning methods to the teaching of this novel. Spindrift Gazes is a collection of short stories that thematically relate to how human dignity is engendered and how that sense of dignity is challenged, undercut, and regained. These fictional constructions are particularly concerned with issues of transformation, how and why change takes place. Of particular emphasis is how differing kinds of human relationships are instrumental in the nature of those changes. Of fundamental concern is to give fictional form to human rights issues.

Past And Present In Hope Emily Allen's Essay "Relics", John C. Hirsh

The Courier

This article sheds light on the American medievalist Hope Emily Allen, specifically the period when she was writing the essay "Relics." Allen Hope Allen probably began work on the essay after she returned to Oneida from Britain in 1912. In the subsequent period, familial obligations, health, and the advent of the First WorId War kept her away from the European libraries on which her work depended, and she turned to material already in hand, or to essays based upon her Oneida home. It was in this period too that, as "an antiquary bred in the bone", she began to record …
