Preaching Prosperity: Christian Missions To Jamaica In The Early To Mid-19th Century, Shalea Athene Del Villar
Preaching Prosperity: Christian Missions To Jamaica In The Early To Mid-19th Century, Shalea Athene Del Villar
Senior Projects Spring 2016
The Hampden Estate is one of the oldest sugar estates in Jamaica and to this day the rum that comes from its distilleries is still well known throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Perhaps a little more obscure is that circa 1824 a Presbyterian chapel was established on the estate. This event is unremarkable enough except that one may not expect to find that, although many of the mostly Scottish staff of the surrounding estates including overseers and bookeepers came, many were not able to find seats. This was because the enslaved of the plantation were occupying the …

Clusivity In Presidential Discourse: A Rhetorical Discourse Analysis Of State-Of-The-Nation Addresses In Ghana And The United States, Stephen K. Dadugblor
Clusivity In Presidential Discourse: A Rhetorical Discourse Analysis Of State-Of-The-Nation Addresses In Ghana And The United States, Stephen K. Dadugblor
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This thesis examines the ways in which rhetors in presidential discourse simultaneously associate with and dissociate from their audiences in an attempt to consolidate power while subtly masking their actions. Drawing on comparative rhetoric and Andrus’ (2013) Rhetorical Discourse Analysis (RDA) that combines rhetoric and (critical) discourse analysis, I analyze the expressive values of selected lexical items, and the inclusive and exclusive uses of “we” in selected State of the Nation/Union Addresses in Ghana and the United States. I argue that presidents’ unique position during these speeches as both heads of nations and heads of their political parties presents a …

Hidden In Plain Sight: Image, Text, And Social Commentary In Victor Ekpuk's Cartoons For The Daily Times Of Nigeria, 1989-1998, Kaleb W. Jewell
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis provides an analysis of the cartoons produced by Victor Ekpuk for The Daily Times newspaper of Nigeria from 1989 through 1998 and the artist’s use of ancient nsibidi script to “hide in plain sight” his social commentaries on sociopolitical and economic issues in Nigeria. Victor Ekpuk’s original cartoons within the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African Art are examined in the context of indigenous masking practices and other indirect methods employed by indigenous comedians to protect themselves. Moreover, the cartoons’ use of caricature and their nsibidi scripts within are argued to provide a connotative …

For more than a century watermarks have been used as an important component in cataloging, dating, and authenticating books, manuscripts, art work, musical scores, financial instruments and other paper items. The gains can be immense if watermarks and countermarks, not as singletons but in combination, are studied as only one aspect of a paper sheet and that examination is combined with study extending across many disciplines. The Andrea Galvani Pordenone paper mills provide a useful case study as to how we can deduce date ranges for their watermarks by using a holistic approach – combining paper sheet analysis with the …
