Sustaining Development Through Servant-Leadership: A Commentary On Nnamdi Azikiwe’S My Odyssey: An Autobiography (1970)., Uzoechi Nwagbara
Sustaining Development Through Servant-Leadership: A Commentary On Nnamdi Azikiwe’S My Odyssey: An Autobiography (1970)., Uzoechi Nwagbara
Dr Uzoechi Nwagbara
The thrust of this paper is a commentary on Nnamdi Azikiwe’s My Odyssey: An Autobiography (1970) as a reflection of a template for sustaining development in Africa through the prism of personal journey (odyssey) that resonates with servant-leadership. Although written over four decades, My Odyssey offers a vignette of how leadership ought to be envisioned in the present time for Africa’s development through an accomplished leader’s personal experience. Another point worth noting here is that a commentary on this book will be made, not a review of the book per se, going by the fact that book reviews tend to …

Culla Mi Gullah, Re-Imagining African American Female Artists And The Sea Islands: Exploring Africanisms And Religious Expressions In Creative Works, Rebekkah Mulholland
Master of Humanities Capstone Projects
While the Sea Islands have captured the interest of scholars and artists, especially since Zora Neale Hurston’s groundbreaking novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), this thesis provides a historiography of Africanisms and religious expressions explored in Gullah literary traditions within African-American women’s fiction, specifically with regards to the works of Julie Dash and Tina McElroy Ansa. Following Hurston’s example, during the 1980s Toni Morrison, Toni Cade Bambara and Paule Marshall further laid the groundwork for writers to signify upon. This qualitative study of Dash’s 1991 film and novel Daughters of the Dust (1997) along with Ansa’s novels Baby of …
New Media And Ethno-Politics In The Guinean Diaspora, Mohamed S. Camara
New Media And Ethno-Politics In The Guinean Diaspora, Mohamed S. Camara
Security Studies & International Affairs - Daytona Beach
This paper discusses the resurgence of ethno-politics in Guinea in conjunction with the reintroduction of multiparty politics after three decades of single-party and military rule, and the trend’s multilayered repercussion into the Guinean Diaspora of North America. It further examines the principal ways in which ethno-regionalist organisations populating that Diaspora use and misuse new media outlets (web sites, web radio stations, and blogs) in order to promote the political agenda of their respective ethno-political elites. The article scrutinises the deficit of professionalism that characterises the performance of most of those publishing on such web sites and broadcasting on such stations and …

The 'Nevergiveups' Of Grandmothers Against Poverty And Aids: Scholar-Journalism-Activism As Social Documentary, Eric Miller, Jo-Anne Smetherham, Jennifer Fish
Women's & Gender Studies Faculty Publications
This article traces our collective experiences as a photographer, a journalist and an academic engaged in the process of documenting the lives of South Africa’s grand-mothers – who are confronting the HIV/AIDS pandemic while carrying an immense history of social struggle in the apartheid era. We set out with individual aspirations to record, in visual and narrative forms, the life stories and lived experiences of members of the Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA) organization based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Over the course of three years of building relationships and working with leaders of this organisation, we developed a social …

Anti-Trafficking Legislation In Sub-Saharan Africa: Analyzing The Role Of Coercion And Parental Responsibility, Ruby Andrew, Benjamin N. Lawrance
Anti-Trafficking Legislation In Sub-Saharan Africa: Analyzing The Role Of Coercion And Parental Responsibility, Ruby Andrew, Benjamin N. Lawrance
Fourth Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking, 2012
This article discusses the effect of US and international support for local laws to combat child trafficking in sub-Saharan African states. The annual ranking of African anti-trafficking measures, produced by the US State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (OMCTP) in conjunction with the UN Office on Crime and Drugs, not only provides an important source of data but also creates a powerful incentive for African states to effect legislative change.
We argue that, although the US supports criminalization of traffickers and the OMCTP espouses laws to deter parental inducement to support trafficking activities, the implementation of …

La ProbléMatique Du Retour Dans Les Films Et Romans Africains : Analyse Comparative D'Œuvres Pré-IndéPendance Et Contemporaines, Anoumou Amekudji
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications
Background
There are limited data on the prevalence and associated factors of truancy in southern Africa. Yet truancy should attract the attention of public health professionals, educators and policy makers as it may be associated with adolescent problem behaviours. The objectives of the study were to estimate the prevalence and determine correlates of school truancy among pupils in Zambia.
Findings
We used data collected in 2004 in the Zambia Global School-based Health Survey. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with truancy. A total of 2257 pupils participated in the survey of whom 53.9% were male. Overall 58.8% …
