Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion
These poems are part of a larger manuscript that explores the poet's lifelong engagement with knitting and sewing—and with the usually woman-centered communities that form around these crafts. The poems also respond to the cultural treatment of craft knowledge as frivolous or simple, highlighting the highly technical nature of such work and the mathematical, structural, and geometric knowledge required to successfully execute textile crafts. Densely referential, these poems invite the reader to play within their sounds and associations, making her own leaps and connections as she reads.

Scribal Hermeneutics And The Twelve Gates Of Ludlul Bēl Nēmeqi, Alan Lenzi
Scribal Hermeneutics And The Twelve Gates Of Ludlul Bēl Nēmeqi, Alan Lenzi
College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
In the final tablet of Ludlul bēl nēmeqi lines 42–53 Šubši-mešrê-Šakkan passes through twelve gates in or near the precincts of Marduk's Esagila in Babylon. As the protagonist passes through these twelve gates he is symbolically rehabilitated and reintegrated into society, marking the end of his trials and the beginning of his Marduk-renewed life. One gate is named in each of the twelve lines. At each gate, identified in the first half of the line, the protagonist is granted something positive, which is described in the second half of the line. In the present study I argue that the author …
Recovering The Beauty Of Medusa, Alexander M. Schlutz
Recovering The Beauty Of Medusa, Alexander M. Schlutz
Publications and Research
This essay presents a close analysis of P.B. Shelley’s fragmentary ekphrastic poem “On the Medusa of Leonardo da Vinci in the Florentine Gallery.” It places Shelley’s text in its aesthetic, mythological and historico-political contexts to demonstrate how Shelley aims to undo the ideological and representational structures of power that inform human language, art, and history, and which turn Medusa into the monstrous Other as which she appears. In Shelley’s text by contrast, Medusa becomes a figure for a revelatory beauty that cannot become visible in the distorting parameters of a discourse of power that informs our very perception of what …

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
The grammatical text contains various and multiple signs that represent what the author wants from his text, and the ideas it expresses. The methods that study linguistic production are many and diverse, all of which aim to reach a comprehensive analysis of the text and its elements. The method of (text grammar) is one of the distinctive methods in analyzing linguistic texts and revealing their hidden meanings in a way that contributes to understanding their meanings and the connotations they contain, which is what made us adopt this method in this study. In addition, the chosen text here is a …
Manifestations Of Extinction In The Poetry Of Ibn Hamdis Al-Siqilli, Hussein Majeed Rustum Al-Hassouna
Manifestations Of Extinction In The Poetry Of Ibn Hamdis Al-Siqilli, Hussein Majeed Rustum Al-Hassouna
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
This research achievement constitutes a step in the literary research that is concerned with studying the manifestations of the feeling of disappearance and fragmentation and its relationship to textual performance, and its role in producing poetic semantics and shaping its data, as it stops at a psychological phenomenon that almost constitutes a dominant stylistic and expressive feature in the production of the poet Ibn Hamdis Al-Siqilli, who experienced the pain of separation and felt the torment of alienation and the nothingness of the mortal world. Perhaps we are not far from the truth if we say that the phenomenon of …

Of Sonnets And Archives: Robert Graves, Laura Riding, And The Erasure Of Modern Poetry, Margaret Konkol
Of Sonnets And Archives: Robert Graves, Laura Riding, And The Erasure Of Modern Poetry, Margaret Konkol
English Faculty Publications
In the nearly eighty years since Laura Riding and Robert Graves ceased their collaborative endeavors there has been much speculation as to the nature and extent of their literary partnership. Graves retold the past to his biographers, constructing Laura Riding as a queen yogi figure wielding an almost sinister influence. In response to these accusations Riding returned fire with volley after volley of “corrective” letters which she sent to Graves’s biographers as well as any magazine or student that she found to be sympathizing with Grave’s account of the creative partnership. At the time of her death in 1991, Riding …

"The Fact Of God": Form And Belief In British Modernist Poetry, Annarose Fitzgerald
"The Fact Of God": Form And Belief In British Modernist Poetry, Annarose Fitzgerald
English Language and Literature ETDs
My dissertation analyzes the relationship between the concept of metaphysical belief and the poetic innovations enlisted to articulate this belief in the works of British modernist poets W. B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, Mina Loy, T.S. Eliot, Basil Bunting, Philip Larkin, and Thom Gunn. Moving from Celtic mythos to Buddhist philosophy, Anglo-Catholic prayer to ancient Greek burial rites, I argue that spirituality and poetic experimentation were reciprocal influences: modernist experimentations in poetic form had a direct impact on how poets represented and articulated metaphysical beliefs and practices, and these metaphysical concepts themselves significantly affected these poets development of their craft, prompting …
The Visual Poetry Of Marc Chagall's White Crucifixion, Janis Stair
The Visual Poetry Of Marc Chagall's White Crucifixion, Janis Stair
Theses and Dissertations
Marc Chagall (1887-1985), was a Russian-Jewish artist who created a prolific body of work during the tumultuous era of the twentieth-century. While his artwork came under the influence of modernist trends, Chagall developed his own unique style that has often been described in terms of its "visual poetry." This paper examines how this term applies to one of his most important works of art, the 1938 painting White Crucifixion. Four key ways in which the various forms of art and poetry intersect in this painting are discussed in the context of the historical and cultural conditions that had a profound …

All NMU Master's Theses
This thesis is a collection in four parts, divided by genre with the exception of the titular essay series, Finding Tuwaqachi. Insecurity, affirmation, and our need to connection emerge as the primary themes of this work. The essay series, Finding Tuwaqachi, takes a close look at intentional community and center for alternative therapy located in southern Michigan during the 1970s, by examining several lives caught up in this project. Part two of this collection comprises a series of lyric essays which explore the need to be heard, as well as the ultimate fallibility of our attempts to understand and …
