Pioneer Bands And Orchestras Of Salt Lake City, Martha Tingey Cook

Theses and Dissertations

Early Mormon leaders realized the value of music as an important element in spiritual and recreational activities. Consequently, they encouraged and sponsored musical groups.

Three pioneer bands of Salt Lake City—the Nauvoo Brass Band, Nauvoo Legion Martial Band, and Quadrille Band—had originated during the early 1840's in Nauvoo, Illinois, under the sponsorship of Joseph Smith. They performed at all important civic and social occasions.

Franco-American Music Traditions Exhibit

This was one of many bands in the St. Jon’s Day parade in Lewiston. The Dewitt Hotel near City Hall was considered a local landmark.

The Dominican Band regrouped in 1939 under the auspices of The Montagnard Club, a well-known Lewiston snowshoe club, and was renamed La Fanfare Montagnard. The band played in parades and at social functions around the state.

Ninety years ago Japanese music was essentially monophonic, confined to a limited number of traditional instruments, and completely Oriental in technique and sound. Today, Western harmony and counterpoint are intrinsic elements in much of Japanese music. Highly competent symphony orchestras in Japan perform skillfully orchestrated Japanese scores. Year by year the musical world of Japan becomes more Western.

The Lutheran Church is a liturgical church. It is in the mainstream of Western Christianity and uses a clearly defined form of the Western Liturgy. The Lutheran Church is also a singing church. Born with it in the 16th century were hymns that are still favorites of Christians everywhere. Lutherans have always used their hymns in their public liturgical worship. They still do so today. The repeated notes 3 flat and A give the impression of the chanting of the priests and the scale passage in the bass clef represents the slow procession of footsteps.
