Research Theses

Luigi Zaninelli, born in 1932, currently serves as Professor of Composition and Theory at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. During his tenure there, he has composed more than 150 works. His total output exceeds 300 published compositions and more than 60 unpublished pieces. Zaninelli's compositions involving the flute are a valuable addition to the flutist's solo and chamber repertoire. The music can be performed by advanced high school and college level students and provides access to twentieth-century American flute music. His writing for flute is idiomatic and focuses on the ilmate beauty of the instrument. Through researching flute …

His family moved to East Liverpool, OH, after World War II, and relocated to Huntington, WV, in January 1945. The reason for the events was to explore technologies within art at colleges and to expand on the topic of interactive, electronic performance concerts, and digital media. An analysis on Martin Heidegger’s perspective on heretical notion of music technology vs. Andrew Feenberg’s instance of subversive rationalization. Heidegger believes that technology should be external to the artist’s work. He furthers this notion by stating that tEchne is crucial to understanding technology. The article that explains Heidegger's perspective is concluded with an explanation of free relations to technology. Scipio questions Heidegger’s arguments by proposing a few counter arguments to Heidegger. The article explains Feenberg’s notion of technological determinism and subversive rationalization. Danse du ventre (also called belly dance or danse orientale) most probably derived its name from one or both of two sources: (1) a corruption of the Arabic raqs al-baladi, meaning "dance from the countryside," and (2) a reference to the highly developed movement articulations of the torso and abdomen, which are the most characteristic movement practices of this widespread dance genre. Arabs outside Egypt often call it raqs al-sharq ("Oriental dance") or raqs al-misri ("Egyptian dance"), underscoring the widespread notion that this dance tradition originated in ancient Egypt. Lip-slur exercises comprise part of the practice routines of many professional and serious amateur brasswind players. There are several reasons why so many players practise lip-slurs. One of those reasons is the belief that lip-slurs contribute to the development of the brasswind high register. This study argues that while there is a vast amount of anecdotal evidence from many authors widely deemed to be influential in the form of method books or writings that lip-slurs can contribute to the development of the brasswind high register, there has been little research to support this widely held belief. Theobald Boehm is most well known for his contribution to the structure of today's standard flute key system. He was born in 1794 to a goldsmith, who intended him to follow the trade. Boehm became skilled at gold smithing while also pursuing musical studies, using a flute to improve his weak lungs. He learned to play the flageolet and one-keyed flute in childhood. He grew unhappy with the construction of these and made himself a copy of a four-keyed flute by Grenser of Dresden. In 1812, he became principal flautist at the Isartor Theater. He was able to continue both …

As an area of geographical inquiry, popular music has not been explored to any large extent. Where writings exist, they have been somewhat divorced from recent theoretical and methodological questions that have rejuvenated social and cultural geography.
