It is the purpose of this book to trace the growth of the Convent of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, from its establishment to the present time. In doing so, the author has attempted to show how a frontier country modified the character of an Old World Benedictine convent with its centuries of tradition, and how at the same time this religious community influenced in its turn the cultural and religious life of Minnesota and the Midwest. The purpose of this thesis was to bring to light as much of the music as possible, all the performers that could be recorded, and sufficient audience reaction to indicate the musical preferences of the area in order to provide an accurate, detailed account of the early years in the Salt Lake Theatre, 1862 - 1870. There was also the desire to present these things in such a way that they would be reliable, factual, complete, and still, if possible, interesting. The first known party of white men who entered the area that became Utah included a Franciscan Friar, Silvestre Velez de Escalante. This expedition passed through the Milford Valley in the fall of 1776 and it was when they were camped at San Brigida, near or on the present site of Milford, that the important decision to turn back to Sante Fe was made.

He was born November 5, 1807, a son of Edward and Mary Elliott Tullidge, in Weymouth, Dorsetshire, England. Mormon contributions to California history are generally well known. Most school children have heard of the march of the Mormon Battalion. The name of Samuel Brannan is known to almost any student interested in this area. The more inquisitive scholar is familiar with the voyage of the BROOKLYN and subsequent relations of the Mormons to the history of San Francisco.
