Preaching from the Old Testament has fallen on evil times. Many a pastor, even if he does not have a mental block from struggles with Hebrew at the seminary or a feeling of guilt because of rusty exegetical skills, feels much more at home in the New Testament. If he should attempt to preach on an Old Testament text, he cannot assume that his audience has either a ready knowledge or interest in the Old Testament. Unlike a bygone generation, his audience would think it a joke to name a child Jehoshaphat or Ahab or Hepzibah.

This study attempts to trace the efforts of the Mormon people to obtain redress from the national government for the losses of life and property which they had suffered and the hardships which they had endured while residing in the state of Missouri during the 1830's. The Mormon appeals to Congress and the President are considered and an evaluation is made of the Mormon view of the national government's responsibility for the protection of individual rights.

The Moderate Period Of The Temperance Reform, 1776-1833, Edith C. Burrows

Honors Theses

Temperance is an organized reform began at the end of the American Revolutionary War, its leaders inspired by the ravages dealt by alcoholics to the soldiers and sailors. At first self-control was desired; later self-denial was its dominant theme. Limited as it was, the temperance crusade, led by the aristocracy and the clergy, was naturally gradual in acquiring acceptance and strength. The course of its development from the 1780's until the mid-1830's was one of moderate demands, as compared with the later extremism, and one led by the fiery clerics and their assemblies, compared to the later common lay leadership.

This booklet contains a history of St. James Church in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, covering the period from 1721 to 1965. The history, and a poem, were written by Dr. John Wentworth Clawson of Ursinus College. The booklet was published in memory of Dr. Clawson, with a foreword by Edward Platts, Rector of St. James Church. Clawson was a member of the church for fifty-three years.

While a number of short articles and histories of Silver Reef have been written, they tend either to be anecdotal in character or to emphasize the merely sensational aspects of the mining camp. These writings have failed to investigate some of the most basic sources of information concerning this highly interesting mining epic in Southern Utah. Therefore, there remains a real need for a thoroughly researched and documented history of silver Reef - a need that this thesis tries to meet.

In the late 1870's, missionary successes in the southern states prompted the search for a location to which the new converts could migrate and establish their homes among the Saints in "Zion." The area eventually decided upon for the location of the southern converts was the San Luis Valley, in southern Colorado. Elder John Morgan, the most prominent figure in the early missionary work in the South, was given the leading role in bringing southern converts to the settlements which were to be established in the San Luis Valley. Patrick Edward Connor was a military officer who was given the duty of guarding the overland mail route in the West during the civil war. In addition to this he was to watch the Mormons in Utah and determine their loyalty to the government of the United States. He was the commander of the Military District of Utah and he established his headquarters at Camp Douglas which was near Salt Lake City, Utah.
